LOWER— A Villas man was airlifted to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center’s trauma unit in Atlantic City in critical condition after he was found unconscious in a vehicle that ran off the north bound lane of the Garden State Parkway at mile post 2.3 on Sunday, June 28 at 3:28 p.m.
According to state police Sean Berry, 24, was traveling north bound in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix in the left hand passing lane. For an unknown reason his vehicle ran off the roadway traveling down the grass median where it glanced off the bull nose of a guide rail. The Pontiac then continued to travel approximately 200 feet where it veered off into the hedge line and then entered the tidal wetlands coming to rest in two feet of water.
Berry was found unconscious and unresponsive by passing motorists who had stopped to render assistance, according to state police.
Middle Township Police units arrived after being requested to assist by state police and also reported the victim to be unconscious. Middle officers requested a medevac to fly.
According to state police Berry was found with no sign of injury. Sean’s father Thomas Berry tells the Herald his son blacked out while he was driving due to a heart problem they were unaware he had. Berry, 24 was admitted to Atlanticare Regional
Medical Center for treatment of aortic aneurysm, according to his father.
One lane of the parkway north bound was closed for two hours while members of the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Unit investigated the incident. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, according to state police.
The accident is under investigation by Trooper L. Chiappelli of the Bass River station.

In reply to volksman1 comment about me getting into the water thankyou but I was just doing what I love no matter what the situation requires of me. I did want to thank all four the men who stopped to help this man before myself and the other emergency response teams could arrive. You guys did a great job at helping getting Sean out of the car.
I hope Sean is doing alright, and getting well again.

Harry,
Tom is up at the Hospital today, and asked me to thank you for all of your hard work getting photos, and the story out for everyone. We appreciate the police information you had and updating the story as information changed. No one knew at the time what had happened. Good Job.
I received a phone call this morning from the Man that pulled Sean out of the car explaining in detail the chain of events. He is our Hero and better yet an Angel from God.
George and Janice Perez were two cars behind Sean when they saw his vehicle go off the road, missing the guard rail from a fatal head on collison and going into the water which slowed him down. He told me, he was going to just call 911 as they were on their way somewhere, but his wife felt they needed to stop. The car directly behind Sean was an off duty police officer and he had also stopped to call for help. Perez then told me he knew he needed to go check on the victim and went out to the car where he found Sean slumped over on his right side, saved by the seatbelt, but the airbag had not deployed. He opened the drivers side door and precided to talk to Sean not knowing who he was at that time, telling him Jesus had saved his life from a fatal crash and he needed to fight this thing and stay with him. Perez checked his vitals and said although alive, Sean's breathing was very shallow. He got a back board to remove him carefully in case he had other injuries, and kept requesting to check Sean's breathing. (Where he got the board, and who he was talking to, I am unclear, but I assume it was the paramedics who had arrived by this time, I am not clear)
Then a boat with 2 fishermen who had been crabbing came over to the car to assist Perez, and helped him get Sean safely out of the car. Sean tells me he was drifting off, but in a distance he could hear Perez talking to him to fight, and also heard one of the fishermen tell him to hang on for his family because they needed him while holding his hand and patting it. Sean says having them talk to him and touch him kept him coming back and fighting to stay.
From there Sean was medvaced/airlifted out. Perez told me he had gone online to check on the victim when he found your story with who this person was and called Sean at the Hospital to talk to him, pray with him. He then called me this morning to tell me what had happend and prayed with me. His love and concern was truly a gift from God, an answer to prayer.
So I wanted to thank you for your prompt response in reporting, and also our famliy wanted to thank George and Janice Perez for their unselfish act of stopping and getting involved, and for his Faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who he called upon to save Sean in his time of need, and who along with his wife continued to pray for Sean. We are also thankful for his knowledge as an Emergency Medical Technician, and willingness to follow up and pray with our family over the phone. That took courage! He was the first one to act, pulling Sean out of the car, calling him back to us.
We also wanted to thank the two fishermen who also were willing to unselfishly get involved, and offer their assistance in getting Sean out of the car aong with Perez, and reminded Sean of his family who needed him while holding his hand and telling Sean to stay with them, and reassured Sean they were helping him. Sean said although unconscious and drifting away, he heard them and it kept him coming back to us. We are trying to find out who these fishermen are so we can personaly thank them, and hope you could help us, if they could read this, and understand how grateful our family is for their act of kindness, more Heros, Angels from God. The off duty Policemen, George Perez and his wife Janice, and two fishermen were Angels among us, sent down from heaven above, these citizens just passing by at the time my Son needed help, are living proof Angels exist. A heartfelt thanks from the entire Berry family.
Pam Berry, Villas

Nobody wants credit for this rescue. We were just there to help. I am happy this young man will be alright, not everybody gets as lucky as this kid did. One female EMT deserves credit, she was the only responder not to worry about getting her nice pretty uniform wet and dirty.
