CAPE MAY POINT — Postmaster Melissa Lomax visited Cape May City Elementary School on June 5.
The event, sponsored by the Cape May Point Post Office, took place in the auditorium.
Theme of the event was “Be Safe – Smart Children Stay Away from the Truck!”
Lomax spoke to grades K-2 on the importance of summer safety, especially safety around postal vehicles delivering mail in neighborhoods.
As part of a nationwide safety effort of the U.S. Postal Service, Lomax showed a DVD cartoon introducing Franklin, an eagle, and his sidekick bird friend, Benny, warning children to stay away from Postal Service delivery vehicles.
Lomax also explained the importance of letter writing as a personal form of keeping in touch with special friends and loved ones over summer vacation.
“A simple and affordable way to stay connected with your friends and family over the summer break is simply to write a letter, correctly address the envelope, write your return address in the upper left hand corner, and place your favorite stamp in the upper right hand corner,” Lomax explained.
She had an array of current commemorative stamps for the students and teachers to view, including: the Simpsons, Bob Hope, Love: King and Queen, Wedding Rings, Wedding Cake, Literary Author Richard Wright, and the Forever Liberty Bell stamps.
Lomax ended the seminar by stating, “The U.S. Postal Service is very proud of the many responsible mail carriers and employees who deliver the mail safely and securely each and every day. Remember, it takes all of us to stay safe and I ask each of you to remember to “be safe and stay away from the truck.”
She gifted students with official U.S. Postal Service goody bags, courtesy of the Cape May Point Post Office, which will included a “Summer 2009 – USA Philatelic Color Magazine,” “Franklin and Benny” coloring pages, stickers, and lollipops.
