To The Editor: Middle Township taxpayers need to follow the money. Cape May Court House Fire District No. 1 is building a new firehouse on Mechanic Street. The old firehouse is being purchased again by all the taxpayers, when the taxpayers in Fire District No. 1 already owns it and paid for it when it was built. Now the mayor wants all of the taxpayers to pay the $1.2 million again. This is crazy. The mayor claims that the municipal hall needs more room, however they don’t know what they are going to do with this old firehouse. There is plenty of room in our current municipal building. We are computerized, and not hiring any more personnel. Our township is not growing; this just doesn’t make any sense. Now all Middle Township taxpayers please “follow the money.” Taxpayers in the Court House Fire District No. 1 paid the money for the current firehouse when it was built. Now all Middle Township taxpayers are paying the $1.2 million again for an old firehouse that we can’t afford, and the $1.2 million goes to the Court House Fire District No. 1 account. Suppose the Rio Grande district, Green Creek District, and Goshen district would all like to sell their firehouses for $1.2 million to mayor and committee to build new firehouses? Think about it, why are all Middle Township taxpayers paying the $1.2 million and giving it to the Court House Fire District? I fully support our entire volunteer firemen community. They do a great service for all of us. This is not about the firefighters; it is our tax dollars that are being spent, and no one seems to care. “If the mayor and committee want to spend this type of money during these tough economic times, it should be voted on by all of the taxpayers.” This is outrageous that our governing body would do something so stupid when all other governments are downsizing. I beg the taxpayers association to stop this outrageous expenditure before they go through with the purchase. FRANK BRAD Rio Grande

The Taxpayers Association has no ability to stop this.I hope all who comment here are members, they should be.Unless the Township has demonstrated an absolute need for the building,it should be sold publicly and become a nice piece of tax revenue for our community. As for all the couda, shoulda, woulda, what's done is done.I hope the voters know the real answer,if not they can line up for more coulda, shouda, woulda.

I have to agree with Mr. Brad we do need the room. But the tax payers have paid for that building through there fire tax. But if you look at the PALACE that the fire co is building you can clearly see why they need the money. If they had just use better judgement and a company that designes firehousses and not one of the good ole boys maybe the waste that has happen cpuld have been saved. The right thing would have been to gvie the build back to the township with a no sell clause.
