To The Editor: A young man, Michael Sandman, passed away on Easter Sunday. In talking with his mother, Nancy Sandman, of Villas, I shared this story with her regarding the son she raised, and the values she instilled in him. She should be very proud of her job as a parent. Michael and I were working at a restaurant in West Cape May. I was a teacher working in-between school years, and he was a young man who had lived here, in Cape May County, his whole life. He had just graduated from LCMR high school, and was going to go to art school in Philadelphia in September. I knew him years ago. We worked for a chef named Chris who was very talented, but whose motto was, “My way or the highway.” Michael obviously had enough one evening and quit. He walked out of the restaurant. I didn’t think that I would ever see him again. In five minutes or five hours, I can’t remember which, Michael came back into the restaurant as we sat at “table one” to count our tips at the end of the night. He reached his hand in his pocket and placed a bunch of money on the table. I cannot remember his exact words, I wish that I could, but the gist was that the money didn’t belong to him, it belonged to our team; and then he left the restaurant. I admire Michael in that he did the right thing. It may not have been easy, and he may not have wanted to, but he did the right thing. I hope in this terrible time we can learn something positive from Michael and always do the right thing. KIM SORBER Villas .
