WILDWOOD — Construction is complete on in the Wildwood boardwalk and the city held a Schellenger Ave and the Boardwalk for the grand reopening ceremony on Wednesday April 8.

Many folks taking an April 5 stroll on the boardwalk were too busy enjoying the beautiful spring day to notice the “new look” under foot.

New boards that line the famous walk from Cedar to Schellenger avenues were ready be-fore the Easter weekend deadline, completed so that crowds could stroll during the first April weekend.

“Everyone from Walters Marine Construction, to the public works employees, to the utility companies, did an outstanding job,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr.

He said the repaired section of Boardwalk would be dedicated at 10 a.m. today.

Demolition of the Schellenger Avenue section of the Boardwalk began in October 2008 and had been under the critical eye of environmentalists.

The group, Friends of the Rainforest, protested use of tropical hardwood Ipe that had been used for the first phase of the city’s boardwalk renovation. The group wanted the city to look into alternative materials, such a recycled plastics.

The city needed about 42,000 board feet of wood to complete the project and was under a tight deadline of April 12, Easter weekend, to reopen the closed section of the famous walk.

Replacing the entire boardwalk is a ten-year, $10 million project. So in order to make it more manageable, the city focused time and money on the first phase of the project.

Phase I of the project cost about $3.4 million and encompasses approximately three blocks of boardwalk, including a tunnel at Schellenger Avenue to facilitate emergency vehicles.

“But it didn’t cost the taxpayers anything,” Troiano said.

Phase I of the reconstruction boardwalk replacement is a fully funded project with grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority.

OZ is so RIGHT!.

What a scam this was. "A tunnel for emergency vehicles". Anyone that believes this is a fool.

It will be interesting to see if a firetruck can get under the boardwalk with this tunnel. This was done to aid the Morey Organization so that their Trucks did not have to goto 15 street in N. Wildwood to get on the beach. You have to love how Millions of Dollars in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority go to benifit one business. This should be investigated!!!

It is sad this is how WIldwood is run!

I like the phrase "and a tunnel for emergency vehicles". Does this mean no delivery trucks, employees of Morey's who park beneath the pier, information center staff and employees? How about putting a toll for those people using the tunnel, which proceeds can be dedicated for maintenance and future projects? Or is someone lying to the taxpayers? (again)

What a fantastic job done by all. This job being completed, to the satisfaction of the Morey Organization, looks great. But one question comes to mind. What's with the big electric transformer sitting on the boardwalk, taped off with yellow tape. Oh wait.....it was suppose to go into the concrete vault which was put under the boardwalk. But the vault was made too SMALL and it does not fit. Wow!!!!!!Great job getting this area done on time. Just a shame it is not completed correctly.

I wonder who the engineer was.

Regarding the mayor's comment, "But it didn't cost the taxpayers anything", oh how very wrong you are sir. While you were focusing on your main goal for the city being opening of the boardwalk, instead you should have been focusing on the very urgent financial matters that give the taxpayers insight into what is their right to know, which is the next tax rate increase. Remember the increase that you will be imposing upon taxpayers due to your priority list of improvements for the city. But of course, what should have been priority was placed on the back burner for your list. This is how you serve the taxpayers of Wildwood, when our financial issues and concerns should have been first and foremost and the major concern on your list sir. And for your fantastic efforts on getting the boardwalk completed, the taxpayers are paying a cost you just never gave US a thought once again. Thank you once again Mayor Troiano.

PS Requesting to be advised of the total amount we are in the red as well as what our tax rate will be. It is long overdue! And a right of the taxpayers to know!
