I am glad they are requireing people to register. This will give us a way to see those who are making such rude and cruel comments on topics. Those who feel that this is infringement on there 1st amendment rights, DO NOT USE THIS FORUM, it is that simple. It is there forum and they will do what they want to. Just as if you started something, you would want to control it. Good job herald people. And if anyone has a problem with that EMAIL ME.

I'm thankful they're taking these measures. Some of the people on here wanna get so tough behind a keyboard and attack people for their comments. Its horrible. I know we as Americans have freedom of speech, but not on here!!!!

A closed mouth gathers no feet!

If I had to wager I'd say the Heralds probably been approached several dozen times over the years for information on the origins of some comments here and in Spout Off by attorneys hired by people who've been ragged out on a publiv forum. There have been some quite serious statements made and currently theres no way to acertain the origins of who wrote what. Truth is still the only absolute defense to a charge of lible...spit no sh**[ed] and theres no reason to be concerned. Its the fools who turn every story into a 7th grade cafeteria fight that have ruined it for the majority.

OH NO!!! WHAT ARE PEOPLE GONNA DO WITHOUT THEIR RAG TOOL????

I hope that the Herald has some way of authenticating these new "registered user accounts". This could totally backfire if people start making false accounts under someone elses name, just so they can stir the pot and lay the heat on someone else. Thats all I have to say about that.

April Fools day! However, losing freedom of speech and our constitutional rights is no joke! It seems the government and media outlets only apply the First Amendment to themselves and not the people. This great country of America has turned into a used worn down prostitute. Its PATHETC!!!

This is a good thing! It was getting way out of control! Now maybe it won't be a "bash fest". Although I think some were liking the "fame".

With comments such as that: 3/30/09 11:48 PM It is safe to say you can hold your self largely responsible for the provocation of the new registration rule. Judging by that I’m sure that was not the first bit of wisdom you have offered persuading then to change.

*** says what?

I agree with the Hearld on this one. Things were getting out of hand. People can still remain anonymous if they choose to. I have been supprised with some of the comments I have read and the complete lack of thought and personal bashing of people and towns. If you have something to say put your name on it. If not please allow the Herald to keep their integrity. I comment often but now will use my name. I will also think more before I type (the papers point) Villas Proud , Dick Duffy

I be thinking that this be a good move.I am not ashamed to sign my name anytime.

I guess Gary Demarzo wants to sue the Herald now. Go figure.

The Herald has turned into a smut rag. On line and in print with the "Spout Off". Lives have been ruined with character association. Most reputable newspapers require a name and address before printing a letter to the Editor. The same policy should be in force for the comment section on line as well as the spout off or should I say shoot your mouth off section.

I believe that the Herald is liable for whatever it priints in the paper and on line. So my advice is tune it up or shut up and close down these comment sections. It is in poor taste especially when people are being named and accused of all sorts of behavior. The Herald is now a main source for inaccurate news broadcasted by gossipers who have nothing better to do!!

Sun, 03/29/2009 - 3:35pm - Posted by: Anonymous

What is the reason the Herald wants to offer this comment section AT ALL? No one will use their real name or email.

It is great that the Herald is so rapidly updated with news, and remains a great source for those who want to stay in touch, but the comments only attract the worst of the worst.

You have only to read the most recent article (posted below) to see it is strewn with profanity and threats and, frankly, escalating something that will likely result in further violence. I would suggest the Herald is responsible for allowing this violent discussion to continue. I would argue the Herald is inciting violence by allowing this outlet for, essentially, grafitti.

Look at this example:
http://www.capemaycountyherald.com/article/48348-villas+man+punches+wind...

The comment section isn't necessary for any reason. This is not an issue of free speech. Those with comments can open their own newspaper.

You know why this came to be? I bet it was becasue of Officer Whittens blog. I have wriiten and wrote on that blog myself. His friends and family probably got pissed because people where writing what they feel. the man made a mistake and should have to pay the price for what he did whats so hard to understand? No he should not get special treatment because he is a cop, no he shouldnt get sympathy and yes he should lose his job and have to be stripped of his powers. Question is the herald going to do a follow up on that story? I think i myself and everyone else are curious to know

Holy Crap! Accountability at the Herald? It's about time.

There goes people knowing the truth!

I knew someone would bring up the First Amendment. You may want to go back and read exactly what it says and who it applies to. You do, personally, have a right to free speech. What you don't have is a right to post anything you want on a website that is owned and operated by someone else. This is the Herald's webpage and if they want to censor it, they are well within their rights to do so. Don't like it, go post somewhere else.

Kudos to the Herald. I believe in freedom of speech. I don't beleive in the freedom to defame and slander a person with being held accountable. I feel very strongly that the Herald had to step up and put an end to the visciousness of the comments section.

There is no such thing as freedom unless we all take resposibility!

If your telling the truth then there should never be an issue with adding your name to to what you are saying. As my mother used to say "Don't say something about someone unless your willing to say it to their face".

This is an April Fool's joke, right? All the comments I have read on the site have been kind and nice and right on point. There goes the last bastion of freedom of speech!

Wed, 03/25/2009 - 12:08pm - Posted by: Anonymous

Hopefully this is some lame *** Herald April Fools Day Joke!
If not, this is lame and very sad to see that the petty babies crying about comments of the public have turned the Herald into using registered users!

Now the local governments will never know how their constituents really feel. For old times sake, here's to "Doctor" Van Drew who doesn't know a special interest he couldn't fund and "I didn't know it was handicapped" Milam, his pretty little dog. And the LTPD, so many calls, so little statistical relevance. Mayor Beck and his merry band of "do as we say not as we do" political hacks. It was fun while it lasted, now on to the Press online where anonymity is king (or queen as the case may be).

Wed, 03/25/2009 - 11:17am - Posted by: Anonymous

Wow, I believe the overall concept is great, however it leaves the doors open to wide for comments that will be posted prior to being reviewed. I for one will register, but not with my real name. I respond to a lot, but most are nice responses, IE: prayers for the family, thank god there all alright, etc. the only negative remarks I would make are ones that are negative in general, again IE: villas residents are all criminals, Whitesboro is full so the crime is moving to the villas. Well, not all people in the villas are criminals, there are mighty fine people in whitesboro, the're are criminals in Cape May Proper, Wildwood Crest, Stone Harbor alike. I would be afraid if I put down my real name, i would get retaliation. this is a cruel world in many respects. So I believe it would still be nice to have them screened prior to being posted to leave the appropriate rif-raf messages out.

Sincerely, (me)
