
SEA ISLE CITY — Before the cause of death is determined, the Southern Regional Medical Examiners Office awaits a toxicology report on the Conshohocken woman who was found dead over the weekend at a marina on this city's back bay.
According to county Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Sea Isle City Police Chief Thomas D’Intino, the deceased was positively identified as 35-year-old Tracy Hottenstein of Conshohocken, Pa.
Her body was found at approximately 7:50 a.m. by a concerned citizen at the Sea Isle City Marina at 42nd Place, police said.
Following the discovery, members of the Sea Isle City Police Department, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and Crime Scene Unit, the New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau, the Cape May County Sheriffs Department K-9 Unit and the United States Coast Guard arrived on scene to investigate.
Investigation has revealed that Hottenstein was in Sea Isle City for the annual Polar Bear Plunge weekend, which draws thousands of visitors to the city each year, police said.
According to police, the body was examined on Feb. 16. The cause and manner of death are pending toxicology analysis and will be released at a future date.
The incident remains under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office and Sea Isle police.
Taylor and D’Intino encourage anyone who may have information into the circumstances surrounding Hottenstein’s death to contact the Sea isle City Police Department at (609) 263-4311, county Emergency Management at (609) 465- 3011 or county Crime Stoppers (609) 465-2800.

God bless this poor soul and her family. I can only hope that when the report comes back that this is deemed an accident. I would hate to think that we have shady people visiting our town. Thanks so much to the fine men and women that keep us safe on such a wonderful island. I have been in Sea Isle for years and will continue to stay as there are very few negative issues to speak of. It is a great place to be with great people taking care of it. We owe them, and not in a negative way.

Reading on I noticed the post of a person saying about the dry town that is doing just fine next door. Well...what is stopping you from packing up and moving to the dry town. They also mentioned about the robbing of the homes but failed to mention that these robbers that robbed the homes last winter were their own local kids. Was it the tourist that did that robbing? I think not. Sea Isle is a great town. Ocean City has a beautiful amusement park that families can enjoy. What happened to the beautiful little amusement park Sea Isle City had that would draw families with young children? Ocean City, Avalon, and all the other shore points have the same drinking problems in the summer that Sea Isle City has. The Nights in Venace is a big drinking event and I have seen many hurt and arrested during this event. Many local boats are in the event and I can tell you they are drunk behind the wheel. Get off your high horse and stop trying to place blame. This happened and it is a shame. Maybe one of the locals killed her.....Whoooo there is a story. Maybe the tourist should stay away!

I own a home in S.I.C, and have been vacationing in S.I.C. since a little girl. It saddens me that when something tragic happens people start to drawn lines. Those who are locals calling other Shoobies and putting the blame on them is wrong. These people come and spend their money in S.I.C. and patron the resturants and stores to keep the city striving. Yes, there is bad behavior many times but that is within a person and I hope they will think of that when they get out of control and drunk. They must say to themselves that there are local people who live here and it is their home. They have to get up to work and they don't need loud noise late into the night. Would you want that coming from your neighbors house for 3 months out of the year? With that said, the locals must realize that much that happens is also a result of your own local people. The trashing of homes last year which made the news was done by locals teens not those visiting Sea Isle City. What just happened it tragic. Nobody knows what happend to this poor woman. To say she was drunk and partying is wrong until you hear the results of ther autopsy. Who knows, maybe this was a tragic accident, maybe someone killed her, maybe she was drunk and went over into the bay.......we don't know so stop blaming and calling others names. Remember when you point a finger at someone three of them are pointing back at yourself.

It seems that this event has brought out all the naysayers. Let's remeber a young lady has been found dead. From almost all accounts she is a reputable person. The Police are still scouring the Bay today nearly a week later. this was probably NO ACCIDENT from drunken polar bear plungers. Many rumors are flying with most of them wrong. in my opinion- had this been a fall-or accident- divers and 40 cops-detectives wouldnt be searching the area at 42st Bay 5 -6 days later. it is stunningly weird that there have been no FACTUAL reports by the news or newspapers. why are there no facts out there? My thoughts ,prayers, and sympathy go out to the family of this poor girl! As a homeowner in SIC it is very scarey to think about what happened...was it an accident? Was it foul play?...hopefully they will solve this mystery. It is horrifying for everyone! I would also like to point out that the police had their hands full and did the very best they could with regard to crowd control., I just wonder if people are USING this forum to vent their frustration about how our beautiful SIC turns into a horrible, chaotic, drunken disorderly town on most summer weekends and now the chaos---related to the Plunge drunken, uriniating, vomiting, bottle thowing revelers...to me.. that is NOT a good time...sure have a few drinks, kick back unwind but why do people have to go berserk??? The only reason that Sea Isle has a bad reputation is because of the people that live in the town that contantly and publicly say the town has a bad reputation. You have groups like TownWatch/Town Pride that in theory are good but then publish their news letters that talk about how bad the town is. If you keep saying the town has a bad reputation then people are going to start believing the town is no good. Sea Isle is a wonderful place to visit and there are things to do for everyone. If you want more then you only have to travel a few miles in either direction to do something different. Stop bashing Sea Isle. I have enjoyed Sea Isle for many years and will continue to do so for years to come.

These things can happen anywhere. Stop talking trash on Sea Isle. Actually almost no crimes at all happen in Sea Isle. It is a great little ocean town and also a lot of fun. This incident was very unfortunate and scary for the town, but these things happen all over. Don't blame it on the partying and give the city a bad reputation, these allocations are totally false and it makes me so sad to hear people talk so badly about Sea Isle and this poor girl. We all know nothing of the details of what happened. Lets not make accusations about the police enforcement, girl involved, or city of Sea Isle. The shore is a place to go to have fun and relax, every shore point (SIC, avalon, wildwood, AC, etc.) takes part in activities invloving alchohol and parties. Look at the incident a few summers back in Avalon where a child drowned..should we blame the police enforcement, family, etc. for this incident. No!..things happen everywhere. I have read the comments made about SEA ISLE and would like to add mine to the list.I am actively involved with EMS and a sheriffs dept. in west virginia.I have a dear friend who lives in sea isle. I have had the opportunity to visit several times, and look forward to many more visits. I wish that the people that think sea isle is so bad, had the opportunity to see some of the areas, and some of the situations that i have encountered. Then maybe they would realize just how nice, and peaceful of a town that they live in. the people that i have met from there are fantastic. I also believe that the EMS,FIRE, and POLICE in that area are very dedicated and professional. In April 2003 my Aunt Judy Manich was pulled from the Patcong Creek and Great Egg Harbor Bay at 7:36pm. We are not sure how or why she was found there and still have no answers to this day. I hope the police give this case more attention then my aunts. Its hard not knowing how or why your loved one is gone. We love and miss you Aunt Judy!! God Bless

I think everyone needs to reflect - and realize that this was an unfortunate loss for many, and those looking to point fingers at local governments, or blame "the partiers" be humbled for JUST A MOMENT in that it wasn't a loss to you or your loved ones. (God forbid) Seriously - lets have a LITTLE compassion here... I knew Tracy - I went to High school with her and one word comes to mind: Kindness. Tracy was one of the nicest and kindest people that I've ever met in my life. She never had a bad word to say about anyone and was constant joy to be around. She was NOT a party or wild girl. OC is a dry town, oh please I see drunks in party houses in OC all summer long. The only difference is OC doesn't benefit from the revenue generated from alcohol sales. People stop on the way into town and buy the alcohol there and carry it into OC. That is OC loss.

Many are making comments that this is just another drinkfest, sure it can seem that way by the 1 in 10 people that are retartedly drunk by noon. Then there are the rest of us, who enjoyed the live bands, food, vendor tents and general community activity and had only a few cocktails and then went on about our day.
Yes, the police should have cracked down on the open containers outside of the designated bar areas, it got really messy, and its ironic that this event was raising money for the Beautification of SIC.
Yes, SIC is really known as a bar town and yes many of the prime sponsors of the events are the local pubs, but for those of you that don't live in SIC, outside of real estates, they are the only year round businesses that invest in community events. It is a reality. The city probably needed more help with security and they might hire an outside consultant for next year.
And did you see the size of the crowd in SIC for the weekend? It was HUGE, and I believe more than they expected.
Overall, all the weekend long events are good for the city and its residents whether crotchetdly old or not. It brought an influx into our area and helped some of our residents make money is a really bad economy. I saw people selling t-shirts, hot dogs, and many fun items...this helps in a bad economy.
SIC as a city is always plagued with the out of town people who specifically come to SIC to act in a way that would never sell back home...like idiots....completely too drunk to function and dangerous to everyone. I would just ask those people to start respecting the rules apply everywhere and having fun doesn't mean forgeting what you did the day before.
I do not believe this incident (the Plunge) was a direct cause to this young woman's death, and I don't think people can keep speculating that either the city is at fault, the city council who votes to allow these events, the police who were grossly under-represented, or even her friends who might have allowed her to get seperated from their main group--this was just a tragedy and we should all await to hear from the coroner before we start throwing darts at anyone.

It wasn't really the young kids that were an embarrassment... it was the middle aged, too much sun, tramp stamped, drunk by 2:00 pm lady behind me who makes these events for other people uncomfortable. You need no more proof than this, the minute the tourist left on Sunday after leaving well over a 100 thousand dollars in your local businesses registers most shut down until the tourist return. The FEW vocal locals do not and could not provide the support these business need to remain open year round. Get out of your house and walk around this week, you won't find many businesses open. My wife and I went to school with Tracey and our whole community knew Tracey's parents who were well-liked teachers in our school district. This is a horrible loss and our hearts and prayers go out to the family.
Our family has vacationed in Sea Isle for several years now and while there was always the stigma that Sea Isle was a huge party town, our family who is basically off the street at 9 PM never saw the nonsense that people are talking about in these comments. Of course there are a lot of college students, of course there are a number of bars but generally we found that the drinking and partying doesn't really start until after 10 or 11PM. The same thing happened in Stone Harbor and Avalon where we used to vacation. If you are a family with small children and you are out past 10PM with them, then you should have your head examined anyway. And yes, we stayed in the middle of town where we should have been able to hear the craziness.
And, finally... to the lowlifes that are posting holier than thou crap and how she was just a wild party girl, you don't know **** about the girl or the situation, so just go back to your couch and your Home Shopping Network and your despicable, miserable life. You are a loser for trolling on a young girls' death... and God will not forgive you either.

There is a town right next to us that is a dry town and seems to be doing just fine.
There will never be anything done about the drinking problem is SIC as long as the people running the town profit from party goers.
We must as residence come to grips that this is not a family town and has not been a years.
We now have only two choices....sell our homes and move to a more family town .....
Going forward SIC now has a ....BLACK EYE FOR FUTURE TOURISTS......

Tracy was a coworker of mine and truly one of the most spirited, kind, lovely people to be around. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. She never raised her voice. She never lost her temper. She seemed to find joy in all of life's simple pleasures. Whoe could ask for anything more?! She will be sorely missed.

WHY DID THE POWERS THAT BE--decide that it was OK for this day to allow people to be drinking in public. The area that was closed off was not just for the drinkers. I dont mean the tent. The young man whos car blew up on the causeway when he didnt turn at the parkway and many others have been drinking in SIC since they were 15-16. HOW WHY

To the people posting that this was not a family event, obviously you did not attend any of the weekend events. There were families that entered the costume contest for the plunge. there were people of all ages participating in the plunge and families there cheering them on. Yes, there are people that drink on this weekend and people that drink in excess. But for the most part people come to have fun not just to drink, they can do that anywhere. Sunday was a great family event. The run/walk to support autism was great. Talk about community involvement. It is a sad situation that occured Saturday night into Sunday morning but to blame it on the event itself is wrong. And to talk about that young girl and pass judgement when you don't even know her is disgraceful.

There are a lot of old bitter people posting here! You must stop being soo bitter, be thankful if you can still get around and get outside and enjoy the events. I am 62 and enjoyed the whole weekend I saw many families enjoying the events with their young children. It seems that there are a lot of lonely people here who criticize everything and have nothing positive in their life. You must not allow depression to take over your life, come outside talk to people and you will see there is a lot of fun to be had. Tracy was likely the most kind person I every worked with. She was unassuming, non-judgemental, kind and thoughtful as they come, and always a joy to be around... always. It was always great to catch up with her at company meetings and find out all the great things she was up to. She was always in great spirits and uplifted people. I am blessed to have known her. God Bless Tracy and her family in this difficult time.
To the judgemental people out there. Tracy was NOT a loud and wild party person... she was not reckless... In fact, she was very responsible, organized, and a top performer in her occupation. She was not selfish and always thoughtful. She was extremely nice, fun, and simply enjoyed the company of friends.

It was always great to catch up with her at company meetings and find out all the great things she was up to. She was always in great spirits and uplifted people. I am blessed to have known her. To the judgemental people out there. Tracy was NOT a loud and wild party person... she was not reckless... In fact, she was very responsible, organized, and a top performer in her occupation. She was not selfish and always thoughtful. She was extremely nice, fun, and simply enjoyed the company of friends.

Tracy was likely the most kind person I every worked with. She was unassuming, non-judgemental, kind and thoughtful as they come, and always a joy to be around... always. Tracy was a beautiful person. There are no words to describe the loss that her family and friends are experiencing right now. I am so sorry this happened and my prayers are with her family and friends. No one even knows that drinking was a factor in this event. It's sad to see people commenting so negatively upon this devastating death. Thank you to those who are truly concerned about the life that was lost vs. the town's reputation. We all love you Tracy.

We own a business in SIC it is a retail store. This weekend the people behaved just like any other big weekend during the summer. There were a lot of very drunk people.....there were people doing things that were not appropriate for children.....this is the same as any other weekend.
SEA ISLE CITY is not a FAMILY town so no one should be surprised by this carry on.
When you chose to visit this town everyone should be aware that it is a booze first.... booze last town. While it is terrible that this young lady lost her life.....the only surprise to anyone is that it took this long to happen. So if you are a family....want to be a family....or want to live beside a family this is not the town for you. Please remember that the vast majority of people there this weekend were property owners and there family and friends. These people choose to buy homes in SIC for a reason.....now you know the reason.....booze...party and lawlessness. PS.I own a business in SIC but because of my family I choose not to live there.

You should wait for the facts before jumping to conclusion. Its a tragedy that a 35YO has died-give her and her family some respect.
As to blaming the plunge and cancelling the weekend what about firemens weekend a few years back when the young firefighter decided to swim the inlet-cancel that too!

Reporting this story is one thing but allowing people to bash someone is another. I don't even know this women is but all of you with your awful comments should be ashamed of yourselves. You can not judge someone. Just b/c you live in sea isle gives you the right to be down right mean.
Oh and just in case you forgot these " drunks" keep your Sea Isle going.. Get over yourselves and apologize to this poor girlsfamily and friends. They don not deserve this in addition to the sad, unexpected death of their friends.

The tragic events which surround the death of Tracy Hottenstein hopefully will be sorted out by the police and authorities. If the town of Sea Isle is to blame, so be it. I agree with the person who says you can't have it both ways, and don't worry, Sea Isle will survive. But perhaps at the cost of being a "family" resort. What family wants to expose their children to this?
I knew Tracy and her family. You cannot find a more loving family or a wonderful young woman. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hottensteins at this tragic time. May God bless Tracy.

City Council: can you have it both ways? You cant!! This is no longer a "family resort", it is nothing more than a ha ven for drunken madness!! You and this plice department should be ashamed of yourselves- the public drinking, the steakers running across the post office lawn and thedestruction and death left behind because you, the police department and the greedy people running your business distrct! The president of city council promotes closing the school and also promotes underage drinking- good job!
