SEA ISLE CITY — It was 41 degrees at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 and hundreds of plungers were about to brave the frigid Atlantic waters, but first they warmed up with a costume contest in an outdoor tent at the LaCosta Lounge at JFK Boulevard and Landis Avenue here.

Costumes included basketball players, a polar plunge phanatic, wrestlers, Santa, grapes and plenty of Valentine's Day themed outfits such as a love train, cupid, a cross-dressing bride and a love angel.

See the Feb. 18 print edition of the Herald for a photo page of this event.

After reading some of these comments, I can't believe some of you naysayers were even at the Plunge. I did not see any drunks or unruly behavior. Just a lot of people making some noise and having a great time. Until next year, go Plungers!!!!

What a drunken , profane lace, *** in the streets, vomiting money-making scheme fro the Bars.
Family event, No Sir. Town filled with a bunch of drunken ***.
When will SIC leaders stop this bad PR to our great sea shore town???????

Sea Isle City Polar Bear Weekend waa a drunken anything goes fest...people were urninating and vomiting all over the place...the language was disgusting. Sea Isle will be known for the free for all ---break the law mentality ...a.chaotic mess. .I feel really sorry for the Policeman that had to control these unruly lunatics. I must commend them for their professionalism and how hard they worked on Crowd Control...The town needs the tourism, but not the LOW LIFE behavior...I cringe to think how unsafe and unmanageable thie summer of 2009 is going to be. Sea Isle is not a family town...it is a free for all do anything you want drunken immoral mess. I appeal to the politicans to take a stand and keep SEA ISLE as a Family Town...

Absolutely a great event, one that is sure to get bigger and bigger in the years to come. My only suggestion is to extend the tent to cover at least double the current area. The city can be proud of this event I know a lot of money was raised. I enjoyed seeing how everyone from the youngest to the oldest can get together and have a great time. Oh and by the way I live here and greatly enjoy these events when we have them.

I attended this event for the first time this year and I absolutely loved it. It was so much fun. True it would probably be rated PG-13 but it is a boom to Sea Isle that would not otherwise be present in February. It brings thousands of tourists into town during the off season. The one big problem that I had was with the people that bypassed the whole "fundraiser" aspect of the event. It is an open event but the hope or intent (besides the profit for the bars and restaurants) is to raise money for the city programs that take place during the summer. There were hundreds maybe thousands that didn't pay the entry fee yet participated. Shame...so much more money to the Sea Isle coffers that is lost. Maybe a $5 beach tag for anyone who gets on the beach. At least some value would be realized.
This was my first visit to Sea Isle City in many years and my wife and I liked it so much that we are considering purchasing property there. Long live the Polar Bears of SIC.

WOW WHAT A LOT OF DRUNK PEOPLE this is not an event SIC should be proud of.

theple were dropping over onbeach drunk, what an embarassement to the twn . it is not a family event , no child should see so many foulmouthed, half dressed drunks. Many peolpe were exposing themselves in public before and after the plunge. SIC did not have the restrooms open on 44th street open or any spot a pots for th ethousands
did any planning go into this or was it just a big drinking fest for Lacosta.and the owners of teh bars. what a liability for the town to have so many drunks walking in public.

DOES SEA isle have any decency left or is just about the almighty buck?
I will be renting in ocean city this year after seeing this fiasco.

This is a great event and enjoy attending every year. The city does a great job with this event.I am wondering though how does the public works boss allow his emplyees to walk around and socialize and be paid overtime for it and than get in thier vehicle and go for a ride and disappear for a while and not be where they were needed.Did all three have have to go at the same time???

My wife and I just returned from Sea Isle and there must have been thousands of folks. It was the biggest I've seen yet and this is exactly what a lot of folks need to forget the mid winter blues and the world in general. Hundreds of nice costumes and it seemed like everyone was really having fun.New Orleans can keep the Mardi Gras-Sea Isle will beat them every time.
Keep up the good work Polar Bears!!!
