GOSHEN -- A multi-alarm fire destroyed a farm house built in 1884 here at 477 Route 47 around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb 11.

According to Middle Township police, Goshen Fire Chief Bob Meyers immediately responded to the scene. He found that the house was engulfed with flames. At that time, Meyers made the request for “mutual aid” from surrounding fire districts to respond to the scene to assist the Goshen Fire Company with fighting the fire.

Members from Middle Township Fire Company, Green Creek Fire Company, Rio Grande Fire Company, Villas Fire Company, Dennis Fire Company, Middle Township Ambulance Corps and Belleplain Ambulance Corps responded to assist the Goshen Fire Company with battling the fire.

David Appenzeller, owner of the home, and George Kamm were living in the older farmhouse at the time, and evacuated the home safely, along with two dogs.

The Cape May County chapter of the American Red Cross responded to provide emergency assistance to the displaced residents.

Traffic was detoured around this location of Route 47, for 2 1/2hrs, until the scene was secured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time, by Detective Sgt. Murphy, of the Major Crimes Unit, Patrolwoman Greenwaldt, and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.

According to tax records, the home was built in 1884 and is owned by Appenzeller

its a shame when people that live in goshen would much rather have court house fire show up to fire at that instead of goshen due the chief not knowing how to run a fire scene!!!!

I was coming home from the airport and saw this fire, there were no cars stopped and i was the first on the scene. I pulled over hopped out of my car and screamed for anyone inside when a guy came running out, at first i thought the house was abandoned. After calling the cops a couple cars came and I decided to leave, help was very quick to respond and when the house started it seemed to start on the porch to the right if you were looking at the house from the street. I dont know if that helps narrow down the start of the fire but i hope everyone was safe.

My fathers house caught fire in Mullica Hill about 3 weeks ago. Its a rough time to go through with your family. Thanks god for house insurance. He lost alot, but mostly his happiness because he just got done redoing the whole place. Basically I am posting this comment becuase I know how it feels to have a house fire. Im glad everyone is safe thats the most important thing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dave and George Kamm and the family. I know George well I am his bank teller. Hang in there its just a bunch of aggravation but it will come together. xox

to those of you who feel that this wasnt a big deal, two men lost thier house due to this, and it was a historic house, which means one more we now dont have in our community, i personally like knowing that our community is historic, and that we have so many buildings to offer. and to all who fought this fire, you all did a great job, and the fact that we have such great emergency service, that respond so well with each other really makes me feel comfortable in this community.

Does anyone know the cause of the fire? About the only positive thing that can come out of such a tragedy is for people to know how they can avoid a similar situation. I wish the press would be more proactive on causes and what others can do, generally, to avoid a similar fate.

MY father, George Kamm lived in this house with Dave.
I was there for the entire thing, and it hit them both very hard, it was amazing that they both got out alright.
My dad lost everything in the fire, and Dave lost everything in his attic.
It really hit us hard, and you don't prepare yourself for these things becasue you always think it wil never happen to you.
This is a real wakeup call, and never take anything for granted.

To 6:42pm, I agree, yesterday there was an all call in lower township that turned out to be a bush on fire in the villas. I was almost run off the road at 9 and 47 by a dark colored truck towing a trailer with washing machines in it. I had my children in the car with me and I tried to pull over but the jerk then passed me on the right and we almost hit. I can't be sure what fire company it was but it may have had the number 61 on the back window. I wish that I had followed the truck because I would have signed complaints against the driver.

Sorry for the loss Mr. Appenzeller, who did such an excellent job on the restoration of this historic house built in 1884. Glad everyone is safe.

To the 4:55 post...what defines a historic house. I'd say a 130 yr. old home qualifies. Get a clue! Sorry for the loss, it was a beautiful home.

Wed, 02/11/2009 - 4:55pmthis was just another old cape may county house, there is nothing historic about an old house.

to this person....there was something historic about that house....a family grew up in the house....a families memories wwere made in that house. the house has been standing since 1884!

you cant say that there was nothing historic about the house. there was something historic about that house! you need to have your head examined and rethink what you say.

Great Job to All the Firefighters that were there great knock down, but I think it's time that the Cape May COunty Fire Police take a Hike, there not needed anymore, all they do is run around with there lights and Sirens on I had one in a Ford Truck on 47 almost rain me off the road, there Reckless and I think the guy had a 61 on the Back of his truck, your times over your not cops ***.

This is so sad; however, it is a relief that they escaped, along with their dogs. I hope there were no other pets inside. I wonder what the cause of the fire was

It's nice to see Fire Companies work so well togther. A planned automatic response that works so well. Just goes to show what a little cooperation and common sense can accomplish. Maybe common sense will start to filter to the south and some of ring leaders will wise up and catch on. It sounds like alot of equipment was needed I hope the response was staggered so it did not overwelm the Incident Commander. Good job men and women of Middle, Dennis & Lower Townships.

This was a tremendous fire, glad to see no occupents or fire fighters were injured in this situation. All go home. Harry, great coverage of this incident as well.
