STONE HARBOR — Councilman H. Brian Levinson voted against rehiring Council Solicitor Michael Donohue and the new standing committees at the borough’s reorganization meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 6.

“In my 30 years experience as a lawyer, things have come up that I’ve found unacceptable,” he said. Levinson is retired from working as a lawyer in Binghamton, N.Y.

Levinson commented that residents should be able to “understand the thought process of government,” however refused to share his.

He continued that “it is not a matter of competency” but he finds some of Donohue’s practices “unacceptable.” He wouldn't state specific incidents but said, “Mr. Donohue knows.”

“I think I’ve done a good job and had the borough’s best interest at heart. I think most borough officials would agree with me,” Donohue said.

Levinson was also the only dissenting vote to authorize new council standing committees.

“The mix could have been made more effective with different people. It’s not all wrong and there are many strong individuals on the committees already who could have been placed differently. We’ve got something good but it could be better,” he said.

Again, Levinson refused to further comment.

Levinson was re-appointed as chairman to the Natural Resources Committee. Councilman Barry Mastrangelo is 2009 chairman of Public Works. New Council woman Joanne Vaul will lead the Beach and Recreation Committee. Councilman Thomas Cope was appointed chairman of the Public Safety Committee. Councilman Randall Bauer is chairman of the Utilities Committee.

As 2008 council president, Levinson contested incumbent Mayor Suzanne Walters during Republican Primary last June with running mates Karen Lane and G. Wayne Harris vying for council seats.

“New year, new challenges. I look forward to a fun festive new year at this table,” Councilman Karl Giulian, chairman of the Administration and Finance committee, said during the comment portion of the meeting.

Fri, 01/23/2009 - 10:56pmWow, the comment below that says "this is government. It is high school" can't spell. I know a council person that is Mr. Levinson peer who can't spell either. Just shows what Mr. Levinson has to deal with, an illiterate college that got thu high school and teaches college with third grade spelling skills.

WELL, If we are going to grade posts on spelling, let's see where you stand.....

"that is Mr. Levinson peer..." Did you mean LEVINSON'S?

"an illiterate college that got...." Did you mean COLLEGE GRADUATE?

"got thru high school...." Did you mean THROUGH?

People who live in glass houses (especially ones whp post on a site with no "spell check" feature, shouldn't throw stones!

Perhaps Mr. Levinson was giving the solicitor the opportunity to respond on his own for the accusation. Now that Mr. Levinson has been dragged Thu the mud, I think it's only reasonable for him to make the facts public. Frankly, some of the above scurrilous remarks should be justification alone for him to make the accusation public. The fact that he was not challenge by his colleagues and detractors at the time, shows that they would rather talk behind his back, than ask the question in a public forum. Fairly typical of what we have come to expect from Stone Harbor's town's politics.

Reporter Truluck caught the essence of Levinson: a very negative and accusing individual. No wonder everyone was "shocked" when he announced for Mayor last year. Thank heavens the voters made the correct choice. Let's hope that Levinson realizes that the public does not want him as their representative on council anymore and this is his last year.
He certainly needs to clean up his act, even for his remaining time. We don't need his negative attitude and cruel innuendo.

"the only dissenting vote" was Levinson and with no explanation he slanders a good lawyer. Sounds like a revenge move....vey childish Mr. Levinson!

This is government, it is high school. If the Councilman knows something that he feels is disqualifying about the solicitor, he has an OBLIGATION to share that information. I am sure very few people read these comments, but I ohpe any who do, convey their dsiappointment in the Councilamn's lack of candor. It is not sufficient to say the the solicitor "knows". We should all be more mature tahn taking that approach, especially someone who is quick to claim his legal expertise.

Dissent can be good if it is done intelligently and for the right reasons. Unfortunately that's not the case here. Levinson brings nothing positive to the council. Luckily, it is his last year. Maybe he can go back to his illustrious legal career.
