WILDWOOD — A letter from Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. read at a recent Wildwood Board of Education meeting asked Superintendent Dennis Anderson to develop an “exit strategy” for closing Wildwood High School.
Troiano wrote that “nowhere will you find a bigger proponent of Wildwood High School,” in his December correspondence.
Despite the mayor’s personal feelings, he noted, “Sadly, I am placed in the position of having to investigate all possible tax cuts and reductions throughout the city including the possible closing of Wildwood High School.”
“I am left with few options when faced with an overwhelming amount of residents in the community who are no longer willing to fund local education,” he added.
Troiano asked Anderson to immediately develop an exit strategy for the high school and a plan that included details and costs for sending Wildwood students to an alternative school system.
Although the mayor requested that information before the holiday vacation, school officials responded that developing a thorough exit strategy and corresponding school system alternative would take considerable time and effort.
The district’s School Business Administrator Greg Rohrman said the finance committee would be analyzing the different scenarios as well as working with the county to come up with a sound analysis.
Rohrman added that with all the elements to consider including, tenured teachers picked up by the receiving districts, reconfiguring the space to allow for the influx of students and transportation, the results may be very similar to the outcome in the 1990 regionalization study.
Troiano noted how “at this point nothing is written in stone, but, once again I must inves-tigate every option necessary to reduce taxes in the City of Wildwood.”

I just read the article in the Daily News with regard to this matter.
Does the Mayor of Wildwood really believe that only one-tenth of a percent of the yr round homeowners are complaining about the taxes, and the 99.9% of the complaints to lower the taxes is coming from vacation homeowners? And then making the statement he is "worried about is first home"--so another words people don't deserve a vacation home which taxes are paid on. Exactly, what is his rationale?
Someone is losing their mind totally!!
And it isn't the taxpayers whether they be year round or vacation homeowners!

TAXPAYERS
GO TO PHILLY.COM AND LOOK UP "WILDWOOD IDEA: CLOSE THE HIGH SCHOOL"
READ WHAT YOUR MAYOR IS SAYING IN THERE.
WHAT A GUY , WHAT A poor example of a man holding position as Mayor representing Wildwood.
WHERE IS HIS PROFESSIONALISM . AND HE WORRIES ABOUT THE INFORMATION GETTING OUT TO THE OUTSIDERS YET HE IS QUOTED IN PHILA. PAPERS. IMAGINE THAT!!
HERE IS A QUOTE FROM YOUR INFAMOUS MAYOR IN THE PHILA. PAPER
"EVERYONE IS B****ING (AND THE DAILY NEWS PAPER WRITES THE WORD) ABOUT THE TAXES". aND HE STATES HE FIELDS 99.9 PERCENT OF THE VACATION HOMEOWNERS
TO LOWER PROPERTY TAXES. To this taxpayers should ask why he isn't stating this comment to local papers for the yr round taxpayers to read as he knows he is BEING VERY UNTRUTHFUL about this matter. THE YEAR ROUND RESIDENTS ARE JUST AS UNHAPPY AS THE VACATION HOMEOWNERS MR. MAYOR!! YOU ARE FOOLING YOURSELF BIG TIME!!
NOW ALL HE IS DOING IS MAKING STATEMENTS TOWARDS THE VACATION HOMEOWNERS WHICH ARE NOT VOTERS IN WILDWOOD (UNLESS IT WAS TO HIS BENEFIT AT ELECTION TIME SO WE HEAR)
IT IS TOO BAD THIS MAYOR IS REPRESENTING HIMSELF IN THIS MANNER. NOW CAN EVERYONE SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE.
IT IS LIKE THE QUOTE SAID IN THE PAPER"THE MAYOR HAS NO JURISDICTION OVER CLOSING THE SCHOOL!!
THIS GUY THINKS HE IS GOD AND WALKS ON WATER..........HAS ANYONE TOLD HIM HE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT AND SOON WILL NEED TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF ALL HIS ACTIONS.........ANSWERING TO THE STATE, THE TAXPAYERS AND COURT OF LAW!!

The Mayor is the 'school yard bully' that someone described in a comment. When he is backed against the wall he comes out swinging at anyone and everyone.
Sure hope his New Year's resolution is to LEAVE OFFICE and take is constituants with him!!

I saw somewhere where they quote Wildwood High School having 320 students. This is a lie. They got caught one other time tying about the number of students. They were off by a hundred yet the taxpayer paid for those 100 extra students. There's no more than 190 students in Wildwood High School. They only graduated around 50 seniors last year. I guess it's to their benefit to lie to the State and get aid for students they don't have. I wonder where that extra money goes???

TAXPAYERS
THE 'GET BACK' MENTALITY THAT THE MAYOR IS DISPLAYING TO DATE IS IN SERIOUS NEED OF ATTENTION BY THE TAXPAYERS OF WILDWOOD.
THE WAY TO GIVE ATTENTION BACK TO THE MAYOR IS TO SIGN THE RECALL AND SHOW HIM THAT THE TAXPAYERS OF WILDWOOD WILL NO LONGER STAND FOR HIS LEADERSHIP (LACK OF). THE MAYOR HAS ONLY DISPLAYED HIS LEADERSHIP IN TAKING CARE OF HIS OWN, HIS CRONIES AND CERTAIN BUSINESS OWNERS. THE TAXPAYERS WITH HOMES THAT RESIDE HERE YEAR ROUND ARE FORGOTTEN ABOUT IN ANY AND ALL DECISIONS. WE DO NOT AND HAVE NOT MATTERED TO HIM OR HIS CONSTITUENTS.
LOOK AT WHAT HIS COMMENTS ON THE NEWS THE OTHER NIGHT ABOUT THE BOARDWALK........"TRY TELLING THE PIER OWNERS THEY CAN'T OPEN IN APRIL!"
TRY TELLING THE TAXPAYERS THE HONEST TRUTH ABOUT EVERYTHING! TRY EXPLAINING HOW WILDWOOD HAS GOTTEN TO THIS POINT WITHOUT DISPLACING THE BLAME (SUCH AS TAXPAYERS DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR EDUCATION)
TRUTH LIES IN WHAT THE TAXPAYERS SEE IN WILDWOOD. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU HAVE GOTTEN TAXPAYERS. LEAD DOWN THE PATH OF DEMISE FOR WILDWOOD. LOOK THEY TALK ABOUT ALL THE BUSINESSES ON PACIFIC AVENUE..LOOK HOW MANY ARE FOR SALE? WHY? PROOF IS VISUALLY SHOWN.
SO IF ANYONE DOUBTS WHICH WAY TO PROCEED WITH REGARD TO THE "RECALL PETITION", TAKE A RIDE AROUND TOWN, VISIT CITY HALL, RESEARCH INFORMATION WITH REGARD TO YOUR TAXES NOW AND FUTURE. AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE ASK YOURSELVES IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE ON THIS PATH OR IF YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND IT IS TIME TO TAKE THE STANCE AND SIGN THE RECALL.

YOUR ONLY LAST CHANCE IS TO RECALL TROIANO AND DAVENPORT, TO SAVE YOUR CITY FROM FINANCIAL DIASTER, THESE TWO NEED TO GO, SO LETS SIGN THE RECALL PETITION NOW.
Sun, 01/04/2009 - 2:25am - Posted by: Anonymous
How can anyone believe anything Mayor Troiano says. He stated during 2007 campaign they had found an extra $3 milliion and there would be no tax increase and then he raised our taxes. Wildwood will not use ipe for the boardwalk and now he wants to use ipe. The high rises will not cost the taxpayers any money and he charged the taxpayers for all the infrastructure to support high rises costing the taxpayers millions and millions of dollars. He said we have less city employees now than we've had in years yet records show there are at least 70 more full-time employees since Troiano took office. He said the Construction Office will pay for itself, but now the Wildwood taxpayers are paying for the shortfall each month for the Construction Office because there's not enough business to support the salaries. Troiano has cost the taxpayers millions and millions from lawsuits, he uses the taxpayers money like it's his own personal bank account. This guy doesn't have a conscience and therefore will never stop spending the taxpayers money even in this extremely tough economic time. I don't believe for one minute that he really wants to try and close any school. Just more smoke screens just like the statements of: no taxes, no ipe, etc. The only chance Wildwood has is to get Troiano and Davenport out ASAP. Sign the recalls.

Ernie Triano and BIll Davenport have to give it up. They're worse than Joe Paterno

REMEMBER, THERE ARE FAMILIES WHO ARE IN NEED OF THE INCOME THEY MAKE AS TEACHERS! Also, we need to support and clean up the year round population on this island! Since the "wonderful" Mr. Corzine is cutting everything back to the bare bone, between his speeding episondes on our highways,& unemployment is in jeopardy for those who live here, pay taxes and can't find year round employment.
Perhaps we should get rid of the projects, and low income housing and actually allow people to move here that are willing to pay the taxes instead of get their free vote to spend OUR money!
LET'S RECONSIDER THE "POLITICALLY CORRECT" *** FOR A CHANGE AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT even if it doesn't seem "fair". It's called LIFE

city hall and schools all ways go hand in hand. It is one more spot to line their pockets. Jobs for cronies and family, contracts and fraud. Close that drug infested sorry excuse for a school ASAP. I used to live right down the street from Wildwood High and let me say when they have to assign over a dozen police officers every day when school lets out, you can bet their is no education going on inside.

If you close Wildwood High, which overcrowded and underfunded off shore school district do you intend to stick with the High School students from Wildwood? Let's face it boys and girls, the big tax ratables are on the barrier Islands, but with the exception of Ocean City, the shore dwellers seem content to send their kids to the off shore schools. Off shore, out of mind?

To the spouter from Middle who says they don't want Wildwoods HS students. Unless you sit on your school board, it doesn't matter what you want. Neither Middle or Lower Twps. school boards care what their townspeople want. They would take the Wildwood students in a minute; because it is all about maintaining and increasing their student numbers to keep the same amount or increase school employees. They will sell you down the river in a heartbeat and make you subsidize the Wildwood students if need be. Don't believe me? Just look at the 5% raises LCMR just gave to the teachers in their new contract..........5% increase...IN THIS ECONOMY.. They don't care about you or me and what we want........we're just their paycheck!!

It's funny how the town can afford to employ more than 40 police officer's for such a small area yet can't afford other things! Money is just being spent on unneccesary things like stupid street signs and such. I've lived here all my life and its sad to see wildwood just go down the hole.

What happens to the island when the Archdiocese closes Wildwood Catholic and sends all the island students to Bishop McHugh out on RT. 9. How many of the students from the island will actually travel that part of the county.
Furthermore, WHS has rich kids, middle class kids and poor kids, good kids, bad kids, motivated students and non-motivated students. My point is that the school serves a diversified population. The State dictates that a public school like Wildwood meet the demographics that the island presents. As Mr. Smith (WC vice-principal) stated to me one day, "Wildwood provides for all the kids needs, even the exceptional/gifted and at the opposite end of the spectrum, the classified student. Wilwood Catholic does a good job for the students that fall in the middle. We can't provide for the very high and very low".
Additionally, lets say it. Some of Wildwood Catholic's parents are racist. They don't want to send them to Wildwood because of the minority population.
Finally, will all the detractors come to WHS for a visit to the "new" physical plant. It is clean, organized and full of the latest technology.
We can't have college hopefuls without a support system and parental guidance. WC does a better job concerning that. Remember the old addage you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink".

dont close wildwood dont close catholic......i would like to know where that recall petition is because i would like to sign that...he should be out of the city hall before he destroys this city....i have a student in catholic and a student in wildwood.....they both enjoy their schools and dont want to see them closed.

Where did Wildwood take the monies from to purchase 4004 pacific avenue?
Why did the others pull out of there and sell it to WW?
HOW COULD WE AFFORD THAT 120K PLUS?
AND THE MAYOR STATES ABOUT THE TAXPAYERS NOT WANTING TO PAY THE SCHOOL TAXES. THAT 120K PLUS COULD HAVE BEEN USED FOR OTHER MORE IMPORTANT THINGS THAN THAT OFFICE DOWNTOWN.
MAYBE THERE ARE PLANS TO HIRE OTHER STAFF TO ADD TO PAYROLL THAT HE CAN PUNISH THE TAXPAYERS WITH FROM THIS PURCHASE HE JUST MADE.
SOMEBODY STOP THE MADNESS!!
HIS TWIN IS THE GOV. OF ILLINOIS!!!!
WHAT WILL THE NEXT STUNT BE?

If Wildwood High is sooooo much better then Wildwood Catholic with their "Certified" teachers why does Wildwood Catholic have a 100% attendance into colleges after graduation? What’s Wildwood High's?
Thu, 01/01/2009 - 1:49pm - Posted by: Anonymous
4004 pacific is the drain on city money construction office, the state would do the job for free but wildwood continues to spend millions to staff and maintain a office just so ernie can control it. thru his puppet davenport of course.

All this negativity hear is something positive.
"Wednesday's capped an outstanding tournament for Wildwood. The Warriors (3-2) went 3-0 with all of the victories coming against Cape May County teams. In addition to Ocean City, Wildwood beat Wildwood Catholic (51-33) and Cape May Tech (55-50)."
Way to go!

I don't think Lower or Middle High School should take any of Wildwoods students in a sending/receiving relationship. No school should accept this. This system is great for the sending district but not good for the receiving over the long haul. The districts that send will find their school taxes declining year after year as student population dwindles, because they pay a fixed cost per number of their students sent. The receiving school (who owns the building) will see more and more of the cost of maintaining the school hitting their towns taxpayers.
Just look at Cape May Point, they are a sending district and now do not have 1 child attending school..........their school taxes are ZERO. Lower and Middle people should fight their schools entering in any contracts as a sending/receiving relationship....make the schools...regional schools with everybody paying a small school tax to support the school systems in our area.

Some are worried about the cost of busing. A no additional cost would be for the firemen to give them rides in firetrucks, when not fighting fires. It is better than sitting on overstuffed recliners while someone feeds you grapes, hot coffee, and pizza.

with regard to real estate...............what did NW, WC and WWW sell to WW recently at 4004 pacific avenue?

• In Wildwood, the total population of Wildwood High School failed to meet AYP language arts and did not meet Safe Harbor. The total population of Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, including students with disabilities, African American, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, failed to meet AYP in language arts but made Safe Harbor. The total population of Wildwood Middle School, including students with disabilities and economically disadvantaged students, failed both language arts and math but made Safe Harbor.
The high school is in Year 2 as a “school in need of improvement.”
Glenwood Avenue School is in hold status of Year 3 as a “school in need of improvement.” The 104 state schools in this year are required to offer parents intra-district choice, if feasible, and supplemental educational services, such as tutoring, using 20 percent of the Title I money they receive. They must also complete a school improvement plan.
The middle school is in hold status of Year 4 as a “school in need of improvement.” As one of 72 state schools in that year, it must allot 20 percent of its Title I funds for parental options, such as intra-district school choice, and supplemental educational services, such as tutoring; complete or update a school improvement plan and undergo a comprehensive review; and take other corrective actions.

Your right about Wildwood Catholic and the sad thing is it begins at St. Ann's Regional. It is not what you know it is who you know and they hide behind their habits and mighty robes. We'll we have seen the True meaning of a "Catholic" education first hand and it is actually far worse then anybody would every believe and I can prove it. Wildwood is a great school with highly qualified "CERTIFIED" teachers with college degrees who know how to reach out to students and get them to learn. It is not the schools fault for it's demographics. The world is in financial crisis and everyone is scrambling to save a buck. There are many other ways this city can make dramatic spending cuts before looking at children.

I came from a district with almost exactly the same taxes, and each school in the district graduated 600 kids per class. Most of the kids who start as freshman end up kicked out, pregnant, or jumped. Why keep a WHOLE school open to graduate 30 kids a year? I know about the costs to bus them to Middle or LCMR, so save that arguement. As someone who did not grow up here, you can look at things like this and be unbiased. Close that eyesore!
Wed, 12/31/2008 - 4:01pm - Posted by: Anonymous
WHS is a DUMP......they don't Educate at WHS....they babysit. KIDS that want to learn are subject to harassment and intimidation by the "thugs" that are permitted by school authorities...to be "thugs." The school should be condemned, for its failure to educate and because it truly is a dump!
Wed, 12/31/2008 - 3:30pm - Posted by: Anonymous
for starters. North Wildwood and the Crest could opt out from sending there students there and broker their own deal with another district. Or you can offer a Voucher and let the student decide where they want to go, Tech,Middle,Wildwood Catholic. That alone would greatly drop enrollment at Wood High and force them into closing.

Just make sure you keep them in the Wildwoods and don't bring them over the bridge to Middle Township our taxes are high enough. I have no children and I am also sick of paying high school taxes.

Maybe he can get some of his buddies who dress up as gangsters on that TV commercial for the Restaurant to rough up the school so they have to close it. How could the state of New Jersey in good Faith, close a school in a town, transport the towns children to other towns via Bus, just because they've poured all the tax payers money from that town down a sewer? Sound dirty to you? Where is the State Attorney General ? Probably at that Restaurant having the Veal Pom.

TWO high schools on the island?? The other high school is a private school. Students are admtted on the size of their parent's wallet. Their success is determined by the size of the check they donate to the diocese over and above the tuition and book fees. There is only ONE high school on the island dedicated to unbiased education.. If you don't believe me, take a look in the school parking lots when school is in session. These 17 & 18 year old students drive late model, top of the line vehicles. Please don't mistake this building for a high school promoting education that is open to ALL. It is more like a cult looking down it's nose at the common population.

What a LEADER! KUDOS TO THE NEW 'GET BACK' ATTACK.............................
Wow! First tried to single out certain citizens, properties and now it is the children. of wildwood. Oh what a wicked web is being created. SAD tactic. (*remember all that you read and hear is just the 'get back' mentality/displacement of blame.
Whatever is trying to be done NOW should have been thought of during the career in being Mayor to which PLENTY of time in office was available to demonstrate the quality of leadership that is necessary to maintain and sustain Wildwood.
To the contrary..........Wildwood is on the decline and being lead to destruction.
NOW WHO WILL BE WILLING TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND RECLAIM THIS CITY FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR CITY AND THE TAXPAYERS LIVING HERE? ARE WE GOING TO LET THE STATE TAKE OVER OR WILL A HIGHLY QUALIFIED PERSON STEP UP TO THE PLATE?
Wed, 12/31/2008 - 12:53pm - Posted by: Anonymous
That school should have closed a long time ago. The only reason why Troianno is looking at it now is so he is not recalled. He could care less about high taxes or anyone in this town.
Wed, 12/31/2008 - 12:42pm - Posted by: Anonymous
How terrribly sad it is to learn that there are so many citizens of Wildwood that do not understand the importance of education. So much so that the once heavily populated and well maintained High School should be closed. I hold the memories of Wilwood High School fondly as do my parents and it saddens us to know others in the community do not care. Maybe if the parents of the community, with high school age children cared about their education, daily activities, and were involved in there lives, the attendance would be better and the drop out rate would be lower. Family, education, a solid foundation. Remember those? I am not sure they do. How can a town promote itself on Family in the summer and dump a high school. Money is tight everywhere look at the library's in Phila. Sad, but hey who needs a library's if they don't have a school.

IT HAS TO BE DONE TO CLOSE WILDWOOD HIGH, NO NEED FOR 2 HIGH SCHOOLS IN WILDWOOD, IT WILL HELP IN REDUCING REAL ESTATE TAXES.
