To The Editor: What is Christmas? Is it a day that finds us exhausted from shopping, cooking, wrapping and attending parties? A day of giving and receiving stacks of things? What is Christmas? Wait. Is it the birthday of someone very special? Everywhere I see ornaments of Santa, snowmen, reindeer and angels. Is it their birthday? No, I don’t think so. Oh, I remember when I went to church last Christmas Eve. We celebrated Christ’s birthday. The service was lovely, the pastor read from the Bible the beautiful story of Christ’s birth. We sang glorious hymns and placed gifts at the altar for the needy around us. Then the lights were turned off and each one lit a small candle as we sang “Silent Night.” Amazing what one little light along with other little lights can do to break the darkness. Christ is the eternal light that shows us how to live and how death can be overcome. Let us keep our eyes on Him, give Him the glory He deserves…not just on His birthday, but all year round.
