CREST HAVEN — A public hearing will take place Thursday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Cape May County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road regarding the Cape May County Bridge Commission’s proposed toll rate increase on the five Ocean Drive Bridges operated by the commission.

Tolls would increase to $1.50 in one direction, up from the present $1. The increased tolls would be used to pay interest and principal on a $12 million bond that was secured in 2005 to fund various repairs.

Bridges operated by the commission include Ocean City-Longport, Corson’s Inlet, Townsend’s Inlet, Grassy Sound, and Middle Thorofare.

I am not an Einstein but going from $1.00 to $1.50 is a FIFTY PERCENT INCREASE.

There is a plan for bridge repairs in CMC. All they have to do is milk the system dry, spend all additonal revenue in salaries and benefits for the toll takers and administrators, then ask the State for assistance, because you are broke, or in need of some much needed cash for emergency repairs. They know what they are doing, don't think otherwise. The solution would be to eliminate the tolls completely and fund the bridges entirely with tax payer dollars, which correct me if I am wrong, is what we are already doing. The bridge commission is a joke, how much money do they generate for themselves, how much is taxpayer contributed. Someone in the media should pick up this story and run with it. It's OK to ask, just don't throw back the question with why?

A 33 % increase to fund the principal and interest from a bond taken in 2005 for various bridge repairs??

Ahh...isn't that how the 50cent bridge toll became the dollar bridge toll ? How many times can you raise the tolls based on money you borrowed years and years ago and already spent?

Their is no accounting, no plan for bridge repairs in CMC. If they need to increase the tolls that much to pay for debt they spent years ago....we are in serious trouble folks.
All this money and still our bridges are structurally failing. I guess we need one to fall into the water before they adequately repair or replace them....especially that Ocean Drive bridge.

It is absolutely astounding to me that these bridge commissioners could even entertain the thought of raising tolls anywhere in Cape May County by 33.3 % ! Have they picked up a paper lately?????? The entire country is in a severe RECESSION!!!!!!!!!! Oh, I forgot....... When you run things like the banks and auto manufacturers do, the easy answer it to simply reach into the pocket of the already beaten down taxpayer like a PICK POCKET! Have they ever considered TIGHTENING THEIR BELTS like the rest of the world has to do ??
I doubt it... It's easier to steal it from the innocent taxpayers.
