WOODBRIDGE — Toll road riders in New Jersey need to start scraping together more change before getting on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

Starting Dec. 1 at 12:01 a.m., fees increased at tollbooths along the 148-mile Turnpike and the 173-mile Parkway.

In Cape May County, the northbound main line barrier plaza at milepost 19.4 in Seaville increased from 70 cents to $1 for passenger cars and the southbound ramp plaza at milepost 3.8 in Rio Grande increased from 25 cents to 35 cents.

In 2012, the tolls will increase again to $1.50 in Seaville and 50 cents in Rio Grande.

A full-length trip on the Parkway, from Cape May to the New York border, increased $5.25 from $12.25 to $17.50. In 2012, the price jumps to $26.25.

A full-length trip on the Turnpike increased $10.60 from $26.55 to $37.15. In four years, it will cost $56.85.

The Turnpike Authority’s toll increase plan will help fund a $7 billion capital plan that includes the elimination of traffic signals and improvements at Parkway Interchanges 9, 10 and 11 in Middle Township.

I am unsure where the reporter got their information. To get from Cape May to New York taking the whole length of the Parkway, you pass through a total of 7 tolls, 5 being $1.00 and 2 being $0.50. This totals $6, not $17.50. The hike was $1.80 total for a one-way trip.
As for the Turnpike, It is now $9.05 to drive one-way, end-to-end. Just check out http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/nj-toll-rates-12-01-08.html

Believe me, I am not happy about it, but where the numbers in the article came from are beyond me.

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the turnpike, but why don’t they build a bridge from Cape May to Delaware

This is getting ridiculous and out of hand. As someone who doesn't have much of a choice but to take the parkway to work everyday, having to cross the Egg Harbor Bay, I spend $2 per day, or $40 per month, just to drive 13 miles. I may have to consider taking the long route through Ocean City in order to get to Cape May County!
