In response to the comment posted on 11/30/08 @ 8:27 am. This is yet another ignorant comment made by yet another misinformed individual. This has been an on-going battle with the owner of this property, not just with the FD but with the WPD, construction office, etc. This man has totally shown complete disregard for any laws within the city or state for that matter. This same man had his gas shut off by the S.J. Gas Co. but managed to illegally remove the pin, therefore allowing him to turn his gas back on. Time and time again this same man has squatters living in his property and time and time they are removed by either the WPD or WFD. He is a thorn in the butt of our city and should be placed in the looney bin where he belongs.

there is more trashmen on the trash trucks beacuse the accually have to work. i was told by a neighbor that the fire dept. allowed people to live in there even though it was condemed. if so than this fire was totally preventable by following up on the place. they just want the money from these fire inspections that they do.

It's sad how a comment "Another great job by the Wildwood Fire Deparment" turns into the nonsense about paid vs. volunteer. All the firefighters there were needed, and reqardless of paid or volunteer a quick response time by qualified trained personnel saves lives and property thats a FACT not an opinion. It is a FACT that the this fire the Thanksgiving fire and the one on Maple Ave. last month were contained to the room where they started! It is a FACT an immediate search was done for occupants Why? Because there was an "enough" personnel available on the inital response to allow this to happen. FACT those two boardwalk fires that grabbed national headlines this summer the inital response was ONE yes ONE firefighter on one engine. In the middle of the summer yes one firefighter on one engine. FACT there would have been a different outcome if "enough" firefighters were there on the inital attack. FACT all these fires listed above have pictures on this web site. You judge for yourself what "enough" firefighters on the first arriving engines can do. FACT there are more guys on trash trucks in the City of Wildwood, then there are "Firefighters" on Fire Trucks on this island Career Volunteer what ever don't matter. So again I will say another great job to all the firefighters there on those fires. Volunteer and Paid all were and are needed.

In response to the comment on 11/27 at 8:08 pm .The volunteers of the City Of Wildwood DO NOT get health care or insurance from the city what we get comes from the county and we put into it so God forbid our loved ones can afford to bury us if we perish saving your life.
Get a life and do something for your town instead of bringing it down

I am a Volunteer Firefighter for the City of Wildwood and I also work for E.Troiano and Sons Masonary.Reading your statement that the sole purpouse of our GREAT Co. Holly Beach Fire Co. is to supply me with health care is a flat out LIE.I have served my city for 31 years asking for nothing in return. It is an HONOR to help the people of this town in any way that I myself and my brother members can offer. It is a FLAT OUT LIE that we get any health care from the city of Wildwood.let alone the people that work for E Troiano and Sons.I myself would like to know what IDIOTwould come up with such a blatent LIE like that.
It is just proof that there is a group of people in this town that will do what ever possible to cast a dark shadow on the Volunteers of this City to further there agenda to just put a wedge in this town. The sad part is most of these people are not from here and have to much free time on their hands.
So just remember when you go to sleep tonight and any other night we will be there to cover your back no matter what LIES you spread we will protect to the best of our abilities NO MATTER WHAT WE HAVE YOUR BACK
VOLUNTEER OF HOLLY BEACH FIRE CO

In response to “on small islands you get a city fire department Thu, 11/27/2008 – 10:40 PM. You made a statement that “volunteer companies supplement the paid”. Historically, island wide career firefighters operated as “house men” and normally acted as the driver and pump operator of the first out engine. As time went on and the demographics changed the flavor of the island, so did it change the fire service. As the call volume climbed and volunteer fire company memberships dwindled, career firefighter staffing was increased to meet the demand. As the movement progressed, for the first time, the Career Firefighters became the primary response for fire and emergency medical calls while the Volunteer Fire companies became back-up or supplemental forces. Fast forward to today, the Volunteer Fire Companies are unable to recruit new members and retain the majority of their middle age members. This has created a minimal membership of middle to upper age volunteer Firefighters who are not capable of providing back-up forces for not only their own jurisdictions but also to their mutual aid districts. This is not a kick in the face toward Volunteer Firefighters, this is reality. I praise the Volunteer Fire Companies who are able to recruit and maintain their membership. You are a minority in the big picture of our fire service. There are other options, consolidate fire companies and districts. If it means hiring additional staffing, then do it. For those who have never been touched by a fire or medical incident, stop your whining and talk to someone who has. Let their heart and suffering speak the truth to you, maybe, just maybe, reality will show you the way.

In response to the comment posted on 11/27/08 @ 8:08 pm. It is quite obvious just how ignorant you are after that ridiculous comment. You should really think or get the facts straight before you run your mouth. To think that Troiano's concrete business or a "certain fire captain's" demolition business thrives off the misfortune or tragic events of others is absolutely sick. Of course this comment was probably made by one of the same morons trying to recall one of the most dedicated people to ever serve the city of Wildwood. Once again jealousy rears it's ugly head!! GET A LIFE!!!

Free Health Care from Vol. Dept thats the dumbest thing I ever heard. The volunteers do not have anything to do with emergency medical care. The paid staff not only puts out the fires, they are the same people that are taking you to the hospital when you have a heart attack. Those people are right we should get rid of the Paid men that take us to the hospital when were sick and save our homes from burning completly down! You people are just dumb. At least I get some kind of worthwhile service for my outragous tax dollars.

In response to "On small islands you a city fire dept, why do you need a volunteer fire dept."
The answer to that is they do not have enough career staffing. They have the volunteer companies supplement the paid. However, this does not solve the problem. Volunteers have other jobs, other things going on, and may not be available to respond in a timely fashion or even at all. The City of Wildwood Fire Dept. needs to increase their staffing. They do an amazing job, (especially being short handed) but, operating extreme below minimum staffing is very dangerous and it is a gamble. It is a gamble because they are showing up on working fires with a one man crew because they are short staffed and have also handle the ambulance.
Don't gamble with public safety. You can only get away with it for so long until somethinig tragic happens.

SIMPLE! THE VOL. FIRE DEPT EXISTS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF GIVING FREE HEALTH CARE TO THE EMPLOYEES OF TROIANO CRONCRETE AND THE JUNK AND DEMOLITION COMPANY RUN BY A CITY FIRE CAPTAIN. MORE PROFIT FOR THEM!

On small islands you a city fire dept, why do you need a volunteer fire dept.
Thu, 11/27/2008 - 12:20pm
What no one wants to admit, including the Municipal Officials, there are fewer Volunteer Firefighters staffing our island wide Volunteer Fire Companies today. The staffing is now at a critical low point. This is the way of life in the fire fighting community. Someone has to save you and your children and put the fire out. Response time is crucial in life safety and property conservation. You have to take a step back and ask yourself and your Municipal government heads, “WHO IS GOING TO SAVE YOUR CHILD AND WHO IS GOING TO PUT THE FIRE OUT?” It’s just that simple, at your next Council or Commission meeting ask that question. Stay safe and have a Happy Thanksg

What is the worth of a human life? Anyones life?
If no life is involved, how much is YOUR stuff worth? Your keepsakes, your memories, your pictures and other priceless valueables? Mine are non-replaceable.

Here is a devil's advocate response: If that place would have burned to the ground, it would not have been worth enough to justify the cost of a paid fire department, believing it was probably insured anyway.
Wed, 11/26/2008 - 11:50pm
thats right a quick response thats what you get when you have a paid department. some people just fail to realize that.

Another great job by the Wildwood Fire Department.
This fire as well as a fire last month on Maple Ave. would have been much more severe if not for the quick response time in Wildwood.
