DIAMOND BEACH — The U.S. Coast Guard Long Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) Support Unit Oct. 17 hosted the 10th annual East Coast Military Surfing Championships.
The contest, with about 60 contenders, originated in Virginia Beach, Va. to improve “esprit de corps” and it is open to all military ranks and branches.
Since many Coast Guard stations are seaside, often guardsmen and women practice water sports.
“The event was established to bring all military groups together,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Gary Shannon, event coordinator.
Local Auxiliary members volunteered as judges, including Jeffery Walden, owner of Ocean Outfitters, a popular surfing merchandiser.
Last year’s event took place in Cape Hatteras, N.C. under the direction of Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Shaffer who has organized the event for the last three years.
Winners receive trophies, plaques, and the honor of being the best in their categories at an award ceremony at the Harbor View Restaurant.
Categories include men’s and women’s short and long board, “Old Guys Rule,” and open bodyboard.
“Each day I go to work with an outstanding group of young men and women and when I see their organizational skills, athleticism, volunteer spirit and good nature demonstrated at events like this or in their daily routine, no matter the serious nature of the problems that face us today, I gain comfort in the knowledge that the next generation will do well by us as they assume leadership roles in our society,” Cmdr. Gary Thomas said.
“It is simply a pleasure to serve alongside them.”

Its funny that if the locals who love to surf here try to get on the beach the troops come out to kick them out. If all the wildlife people are so concerned about plovers and other animals nesting in this area why is it ok to have this contest? Last time I was on this beach you would have though i had a bomb in my backpack or a flame thrower to kill all the plovers in the dunes. If it is such a chore for everyone to surf here then hold the contest somewhere else. Fair is fair.
