WOODBINE- State Police are credited with knocking down a working fire in the laundry room of a home here at 329 Madison Avenue, according to Fire Chief Clarence Ryan.
State Police received the call around 8:20 p.m. and dispatched Troopers to the scene with the Fire Department. When Troopers arrived they entered the dwelling with a fire extinguisher and knocked the fire down.
Firefighters arrived on scene moments latter, smoke could be seen from the doorway, a team of firemen entered the structure to evaluate the status of the fire and ventilate the single family dwelling.
The homeowner had just left the home prior to the fire starting, according to Ryan, who suspects the fire started in a dryer. The fire was contained to the laundry room, however, the home sustained heavy smoke damage, he said.
The fire Marshall was requested to the scene to determine the exact cause according to Ryan.
One firefighter was treated on scene for smoke inhalation by Belleplain Emergency Corps, who had several ambulances on scene for rehab.
The fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshall.
