WILDWOOD — Demolition crews have torn down one of this city’s landmark family fun spots.
The Park Place Entertainment Center at the corner of Park and Hand avenues, next to the McDonalds on Rio Grande Avenue, was being leveled by Middle Township demolition company Albrecht and Heun.
For years, families have enjoyed playing miniature golf at the center’s jungle themed 36-hole Shipwreck Island’s Adventure Golf, hitting balls in the batting cages, playing video games in the arcade and finishing off the fun with a cone at the ice cream parlor.
But as they say, all good things must come to an end. Visitors will no longer see the site’s boulders, rope bridges or grounded ship as they enter Wildwood for their vacation.
Bulldozers and backhoes were making quick work of the facilities and dump trucks carried away loads of debris on Oct. 7 when the Herald noticed the work.
The demolition paves the way for a new Walgreens pharmacy store to move in just across the street from a CVS.
The Wildwood Zoning board approved the project last year. According to the principles in the project, the new Walgreens will be the only store in the country, out of 4500, to be doo-wop themed and designed.
Founded in 1901, Walgreens is not only the nation's largest retail pharmacy chain, it is considered the leader in innovative
drugstore retailing, according to the company’s Web site.
Herald reporter Lauren Suit contributed to this story.

I also think it is stupid to put a Walgreens next to CVS. What we need in the Crest is a convenience store like Blitz's. I thought they were going to have one here. What happened to that plan?
I know there must be others in this town that don't drive...God forbid you might need something small like milk or coldcuts and you live at the end of the Crest...
You have only Acme (which closes fairly early in the winter) or the Wawa on Rio Grande.Acme is expensive....7.99 for a pound of American cheese! 4:19 for a gallon of milk

I like how the writers who are opposed to Albrecht & Heun's Indian Trail Recycling project manage to slant this article. They protect the "owners" name, who advertises with the Herald, and are sure to get a picture of Albrecht & Heun's truck in the foreground. Shouldn't this kind of "reporting" be on the Editorial page?

Does the word SILENT PARTNER or PARTNERS mean anything????? Do you think they are openly, (on paper), going to admit they own a *** like that?

You would be surprised at what the so called "upstanding people" own. What a joke! What gets me is the fact that some of these "upstanding people" who own "slum" properties here in Wildwood love to talk about the type of people that live here (because you know "they live off shore". They sure as heck don't mind pocketing the rents every month, now do they? Just one more "look the other way" thing that happens all the time in Wildwood. I've been here a long time. It would be great if Wildwood could turn itself around.

10/10 2:51 pm I believe that is what the spouter of saying "Why would Wildwood approve two drug stores side by side. On this 5 mile island? Up in the area with seasonal traffic is? And winter business not warranting two drug stores. Look, first we have the 'Mom & Pop' pharmacies, soon corporate comes in, now corporate is going to push each other out............what is Wildwood left with...............another empty building turning into another eyesore............then Wildwood will have to take over the land and try to sell it. Does anyone see the pattern?
They should have made a larger Acme instead of the Glorified WAWA bhey have as an Acme. Or maybe a Target, Trader Joe's or something to bring in more jobs than a pharmacy will. Think about it...............no one else is in City Hall.

Just for your information, no Wildwood Police Officer owns that motel. No police officer from any town owns the motel. The motel is owner by a local business owner. Get your facts straight before you make assumptions. And it may be an eye sore but it houses people who dont get into trouble, unlike most of the other motels.

Friday 10/10 11:59am----------you are saying that a few of the WPD owns that motel on Pacific? How do they get away with it? Are they containing the "crackheads" there? And how do they get away with the renting on permanent basis when there was an article about Wildwood not allowing permanent residency in hotels! That place is soooooooo digusting and what hangs outside and around it is just as bad. No wonder a police officer is always sitting on the opposite corner watching the place I guess huh?

You people are a joke and need to get your head oout of the sand. You blame Wildwood. Wildwood didnt sell Shipwreck Island, they merely approved the building of Walgreens. You should be complaining to the owner of Shipwreck Island. It was their decisiion to sell, not the city of Wildwood.

"Who owns that drug haven hotel on Pacific near WHS as well? Who inspects these places? How do they pass? Disgusting eyesores " That would be none other than a few of "Wildwood'd Police Department!"

With the amount of druggies and doctors pushing the drugs via Big Pharm Co''s perks, it is fitting that another one comes to town. But next to another drugstore in CVS? I guess CVS will now have to close in the winter like the bars and restaurants. Since their photo department and customer service are atrocious, maybe alittle competition is in order...YRWC

Why don't they try and do something about Wildwood's Boardwalk? It has great stuff for kids on the piers but what happened to the nice stores that were there in the 60's and 70's? Now it is mostly trashy, junk stores and tattoo parlors. The Cook's is a nice place and I wish they would develop more stores to attract shoppers to the boardwalk. It was a great place years ago and now the thriving little shops that once drew people along Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, including the old 5 & 10, are gone and now looks ghetto.
Another thing is the condition of the streets. I have had my vehicle aligned three times already since May of this year. I have never had to get an alignment done so frequently. Who ned to Baha in the woods?? Just drive through the City of Wildwood and you get the same effect!

More asphalt, less open space equals increased flooding. Not something we need in the back bay area of the island. To take this lovely open space that has provided recreation to families for years and replace it with yet another drug store chain is shameful.
How are these decisions shoved through?
It's incredible that all island residents have to suffer the consequences of these greedy decisions - including the proposed high rises that will plunge all of us into shadows, cut off our ocean breezes and light up the sky like it's daytime throughout the night.

I recently moved to Wildwood and was happy that there was a place, within walking distance of our condo, that we could take our grandchildren. I left for work on a Friday morning at 5:30 am and when I arrived home, they were tearing down the Shipwreck. That place was packed most of the summer. With the gas prices and the sinking economy, it was a fairly cheap outing for a family. Now, I have to wonder, with a Walgreens just 10 minutes away in Rio Grande, what is the need of building another Walgreens in Wildwood and right next to the CVS???
And, what is going on with WaWa? They closed the WaWa at Rt. 9 & Indian Trail Rd and yesterday I noticed they closed the WaWa on Pacific Ave. in Diamond Beach. It was one of few convenience stores open all year. We own a property in The Crest and our guests were always glad they had that WaWa to depend on in the off season.
I guess Customer Service is a thing of the past!

If you are a tax payer in the City of Wildwood this new store is a great rateable. And this is a small island, there are how many other golf courses? We need other big stores, like middle and other cities, to offset the tax rate. Besides, Shipwreck was not all that. Maybe a few years ago it was, but not lately. CVS needs to be brought down just a little. Now that there will be compition in the area they will be less grumpy!

Get over it ! WIldwood has one of the largest boardwalks in the world. You try running a bushiness of that size for only a 3 or 4 month season.Everyone likes to talk big but do they step up to the plate?

It was such a joy to drive into Wildwood and see Shipwreck Island. It got me into my vacation mood so fitting in its setting up a fun loving ambiance. So what did they do--level it and put up another drug store to greet tourists. Are there that many sick people in this resort? Why do we need a zoning board in Wildwood anyway when nothing they do makes sense? What kind of moronic planning went into deciding to put a drug store right next to another drug store. Wildwood is a doomed town with this kind of leadership?

how about this-------------SHIPWRECK ISLAND AKA CITY OF WILDWOOD...........LED BY?????? LED TO.......................ITS DEMISE. The Rise and Fall of Shipwreck Islands!

Who in the heck approved this building? We do not have enough people in this town to warrant 5 drug stores on this island! Leave it to Wildwood's finest gov't depts. to lead us down a path of NO RETURN. This means visitors/tourists with NO RETURN or desire to live in this undesirable, Pacific Avenue garbage shops (look around WHS area-looks like another country down there) Who owns that drug haven hotel on Pacific near WHS as well? Who inspects these places? How do they pass? Disgusting eyesores and then condos are built around them and Wildwood expects people to want to buy them?

Wildwood has no future as a tourist/family destination. That went out the window along with the doo-wop motels and other tourist-friendly attractions that were demolished in recent years, just as they were being re-discovered. So, at this point, who really cares what they build in Wildwood? The town is a lost cause, probably going in the direction of being more Section 8 than anything else.
What other resort town spends millions of dollars to promote a "theme" (doo-wop), gets all kinds of attention for it, and then goes ahead and demolishes everything that the theme was based on? It's almost comical if it weren't real.
People come to Wildwood, see that there's nothing left worth seeing or doing here, and turn around and go home, or go to other shore towns instead. The trend is only going to continue.
Only in the Wildwoods can they find a reason to CONTINUE demolishing things that support the tourism industry, even as we head into one of the worst economic slumps the country has ever seen. Most other towns have stopped demolishing local landmarks at this point. But not the Wildwoods. Maybe they'll build more condos too??
What a hilarious joke the Wildwoods are.

You gotta be kidding me....HOW MANY DRUGSTORES DOES WILDWOOD NEED?
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 2:42pm - Posted by: Anonymous
This is disgusting. They wan't to know why Wildwood is going down the tubes. This is yet another example of GREED. How many drugstores do we need.....This is a favorite family spot and was crowded the entire summer. Sea Isle here I come.....

Its nice to see yet another place where families can go to enjoy themselves being torn down for a business of which we already have more then enough of down here. If this keeps up there wont be anywhere to go. With all of the places that could have been torn down for this place they had to choose a hot spot for both vacationers and locals.
