OCEAN CITY -- Gary Schaffer, Republican candidate for sheriff, on Thursday, Oct. 2 announced that he recently received the endorsement of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFSCME Local 3596 for Cape May County Sheriff. Representing over 800 employees, the union is the largest group of Cape May County workers.
Additionally, District Council 71 that represents the remaining 1,200 plus AFSCME union workers for Cape May County and also represents the entire South Jersey area has also joined the endorsement.
In a written statement, union President Joe Gariffo lauded Schaffer’s leadership as director of the Public Safety Training Center and his productive approach in working with the union over the last ten years.
Gariffo indicated his respect for Schaffer’s management style in meeting the needs of his department while maintaining fair and honest dealings with his employees.
Gariffo also acknowledged Schaffer’s previous experience as President of Ocean City Police Union Local 61 as further evidence of his understanding and commitment to good working relations that the union believes would be in the best interest of the employees at the Sheriff’s department and Correction Center. President Gariffo concluded that the local executive committee formally selected Schaffer as the best choice for Sheriff with its membership standing completely behind him.

I've been a county resident for about 5 years now.. and for the life of me I can't figure out what a lot of these people do.
It's not all that different from any other political machine I'm sure but get serious.
The county like anything else is simply a whole bunch of patronage jobs.
Maybe I will run someday. Because I'd like to collect a paycheck for sitting around doing nothing as well.. Every couple of years I can print up a flyer and I'm in like flint.

Base your opinion on more than the crime rate. Cape May County had one murder last year. If we have two this year our crime rate will "double." Meanwhile, nothern counties have 100 murders. If they have 101 murders the next year, their crime rate far from "doubles" like our County. Yet who has the more violent county? Don't base an opinion off the uniform crime report alone. You are considering just a small fraction of the pie.
As for law enforcement being cut...yes, its ashame. I wouldn't blame it on Cape May County Republicans though. Seems to me like the State Democratic leaders played a far bigger role with their 4% budget cap.

The smoothest non corrupt? Crime rate has risen six years in a row SIX, Highest suicide rate in the state and these are good things??? What exactly is being taught at the police academy that crime keeps going up? The freeholders fought NOT to hire more law enforcement people in the county and then rationalize why crime is going up...blame the tourist, as if cape may county is the only county that has tourist...Keep believing the rationalization and when you are a crime victim remember that republicans are the one who fought against fighting crime...Gangs in Cape May county on Republicans watch
Let the rationalization begin

To the 10/07/08 7:27 spouter......Learn how to spell. Hooked on phonics offers a wonderful class. Don't question my opinion. Relish it. Bask in it. The reality is, again, no one cares who the sheriff is...no one cares who the freeholders are.....so just don't vote! they are profiting off of people who just vote with the majority. They love it! That's why they always get voted in. Admit it. It's reality.

to the person who decides what is ok and not ok to be posted: what exactly are the standards for selection? no personal attacks, no profanity, just an opinion. and somehow, most never get posted. is this because you simply dont agree? because it will start a riot? or is it just a computer problem? love to know.
(ed. note) The Herald approves 99.9 percent of comments and only edits for profanity or other inappropriate language. Hundreds of posts must be approved each day and occasionally there's a backup or a computer glitch, but all comments are eventually read. Thank you for reading and participating.

Once again, an uninformed member of our community, annoits him/herself atop the knowledge throne. Amazing, how in one breath, they say how everyone in the county is not nearly as dumb as the freeholders think, yet for some reason, an overwhelming majority of the voters continue to vote for them. It might have something to do with living in one of the smoothest, noncorrupt counties in the state. An dbeing an independent is a fense-sitter's way of saying "I vote for whose trendy." Im glad you have obviously gone out to seek an education, but brushup on local government. The other posters are right, if you have something to offer, go to the meetings, work on a campaign, start your own 'better' party or better yet, run yourself. As for Gary Schaffer, don't credit the Republicans for "handing" him anything. Though I'm sure many of the county GOP would like to take credit for his accomplishments, he and he alone is responsible for his very distinguished carear. What I'm basicly saying is, don't think you're nearly as smart as you think.

That's beautiful Art. An advertisement for Dr William Hankin, Psychiatrist directly next to the comments by the public. I love it. Talk about target audience for your business. That guy could probably stay in business with just spouters. Classic!

Yoda, Is that you? "To meetings go." Come on. Know the person you are voting for, that is all I'm saying. The only people who take advantage are the Freeholders...If they were honest, they would agree,

Actually, some of us care very much who the Sheriff is. He oversees many areas vital to the community and his decisions impact many people.
Whatever political affiliation Schaffer held, I would vote for him as he not only has the qualifications, but the drive to succeed in all his ventures. I believe he will make a great big difference in the county.
May I suggest that you attend Freeholder meetings???? You might be surprised. If nothing else, it would be one less person in the county who does not care enough to go and comment.
You can read former agendas and minutes on line. Select a topic dear to your heart and pursue it with them.
You are very right to some extent. As long as there are people in any community who do not care enough to comment on their governance, some will take advantage of that.
So, keep em honest. To meetings go.

Schaffer wins this, Schaffer wins that........Blah blah blah. Schaffer wins endorsements because he is Republican. And I know, all you Schaffer-backers are gonna say,"He's got all this training, and this huge resume." Well the Republicans hand it to him. Nothing against the Republican party (I'm independent), it's more against the elected freeholders who OWN this county. And I know you're reading this Freeholders, not every citizen in this county is as dumb as you think. I just hope that people will just make an attempt to vote, because it's not a mystery that no one cares who the sheriff is, and no one cares who the freeholders are. They all feed off of the non-caring citizens! They get rich off of it! There, the mystery is solved. Please do something about it and vote with some knowledge, and don't just vote for your neighbor's friend's cousin who's mailman knows a freeholder!
