CAPE MAY — A resident walking the beach near the U.S. Coast Guard base found an object on the beach and brought it home on her bicycle to her residence at 1253 Virginia Avenue Thursday Oct. 2 about 3 p.m.
She left the device on her front lawn.
Her husband called police believing she may have picked up a grenade.
Cape May Police and Fire Departments closed off three blocks of Virginia Avenue and called the Atlantic City Bomb Squad.
A bomb team arrived shortly after 5 p.m. The device was X-rayed.
According to Cape May Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr., who was on scene, the Atlantic City Bomb Squad told him they did not have a definitive identification of the object. He said following a series of X-rays, they determined it was safe to move the object. It was placed in a container and removed it from the scene.
The mayor said the bomb squad would study the device, dispose of it and provide the City of Cape May with a report.

Why does the herald continue to say that a hand grenade was found on the beach when the police, bomb squad, fire dept. call it basically a rusty beer can . More over the top journalism from the herald staff

Why were the neighbors evacuated you asked???
Residents would be forced to evacuate because of shrapnel that could flew hundreds of feet !! It's comments like that that show how ignorant some people are around this town. You almost sound like you are from ***! If that thing blew up and one person got "A Hang Nail", you'd be the first person complaining. Now put the computer away and pick up a good book. You can't be trusted with leaving a SENSIBLE blog comment!
