George J. Hallett
COURT HOUSE — On Sept. 4, the N.J. Fraternal Order of Police announced its endorsement of Democrat George J. Hallett, former White House Secret Service agent, running for Cape May County Sheriff.
The endorsement was announced in the New Jersey FOP News, a quarterly publication that is sent to the N.J. FOP membership, according to a release.
George Hallett is running as the Democratic nominee in the November general election.
Hallett worked for the Central Intelligence Agency as well as the White House Secret Service under two presidents.
After a 30-year federal law enforcement career that included his appointment as regional inspector general, supervising 45 special agents in a five-sate region, he and his wife, Marilyn, decided to return to Cape May County.
He accepted a job at the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, where he served for eight years and created the Insurance Fraud Division.
He was required to resign t run for the sheriff’s position.
Hallett cited security and frivolous lawsuits at the jail, drugs and gangs as problems he will address as sheriff.
According to the Fraternal Order of Police, Hallett has the kind of law enforcement and management experience needed for the job.”
On Hallett’s Web site, (www.votehallett.com) that he believes the “Sheriff’s Office is a semi-military organization, I can provide the Sheriff’s Office with the leadership that only comes from military experience,” he stated.
Hallett is a Vietnam veteran.

Mr. Hallett is a very fair-minded, intellegent and respectful man. While I was incarcerated in Cape May County Correctional Facility, he came to speak to me about another case that I could possibly help with. He was VERY respectful of me. I have recently been released from prison and came to run into Mr. Hallett at the local Acme. He remembered me, not only was he again respectful, be showed genuine concern for the women who are currently incarcerated at the jail. He asked my opinion about several issues. I told him that 95% or more of the women incarcerated are simply drug addicts who keep getting arrested time and time again. I told him that they need more drug and alcohol programs in the jail. Right now they only have 1 NA meeting a week, and you have to wait weeks, sometimes months to be able to actually attend a meeting due to "waiting lists". He listened to me and I think understood and agreed with what I had to say. I recently worked at the Democtratic HQ doing calls to help get the word out about Obama. During the call I also requested that residents vote for Mr. Hallett. I think he would make an excellent Sherriff! He is truely a good man!

How much other information being released is an error in the editing process? Let’s see some accolades or accomplishments within the last decade. How about some administrative skills or accomplishments that can relate to the position you are seeking? We want proven documented experience and integrity for the Sheriff. With Gary Schaffer what you see is what you get experience, knowledge and the ability to perform his duties in a professional honest and exceptional manner.

After reading this press release and viewing Mr. Hallet's website it is obviously he is not qualified to be Sheriff of this County. He references pathetic qualifications and doesn't even know that we are 'Correctional Officers' and not 'Guards'. Not a very informative website at all. It is painfully clear that he is trying to build himself up to be someone he is not, as evident by his failed attempts to impress the voters by claiming to be a Secret Service Agent. Just because you spent your career at the Federal level, Mr. Hallet, makes you no more qualified than anyone who held a career at the State, County, or Municipal level. I am not impressed your God-like attitude that you are something great because you worked at the Federal level. Nor am I impressed by your one and only arrest, that of an intruder at the White House 35 years ago or by your photo page with all the blanket Christmas cards from Presidents sent to every employee of the Federal government. You are running for Sheriff Mr. Hallet, not the past Presidents of the United States.
As an employee of the Cape May County Correctional Facility and voter in this County, I plan on voting for a candidate who doesn't try pulling the wool over my eyes and think I am impressed by his nonsense.
Vote for the qualified and competent candidate...vote for Gary Schaffer.

I do not believe that this gentleman is a former Secret Servicee Agent. He may have been a member of the Uniform Division of the Secret Service at some point. There is nothing available in USSS Special Agent records to indicate he was ever an agent. Why doesn't the Herald or some other media ask him directly? If he is being untruthful about this, what else is he being untruthful about? a retired Secret Service Agent.

It's such a shame that Mr Hallett feels the need to exagerate his accomplishments by saying he was a Secret Service Agent when he wasn't and a Detective in the Prosecutors office when he wasn't. His real accomplishments should have been enough for him but it appears he feels the need to build himself up to something more then he really is. This indicates some type of self-esteem problem and definately reflects on his integrity. This is NOT the type of person we want running our Sheriff's Dept.
Gary Schaffer has no need to do this, his record speaks for itself.

Gary Schaffer has successfully lead the Cape May Co. Police Academy for many years, and has extensive knowledge in what makes a police officer. He would be an excellent leader for our county's sheriff department. Two of his son's have also become police officers, showing that his life is dedicated to the law enforcement community. I believe his knowledge and experience would out weigh any other candidate.
This other guy has never been an FOP member(why they endorsed him is beyond me--must have made a "donation"), The US Secret Service will hire you if you have a bachelors degree, interview well and have a clean record. I'm sure Mr. Schaffer has all of this as well. Has Hallett ever had any supervisory experience?
Gary has turned the police academy around. It was once trailers, now its a very nice training facility where officers can and do learn everything they need to know as a law enforcement officer. He's also been very active in forming the fire academy and shaping it into a great facility as well.
Overall I think Gary has done a terrific job, and has supported the county well, and believe as sheriff he will continue doing that.

HEY....Let's call a spade a spade....the FOP is controlled out of Camden County by the Norcross Machine...SO let Camden Co run Hallett for Sheriff there...in the mean time...WE in Cape May County can vote for a candidate that has dedicated his entire career to serving the people of Ocean City and Cape May Co... Gary Schaffer

Again the Cape May County Herald is publishing information supplied by Mr. Hallett which is inaccurate. He was not a Secreat Service Agent and was not a Detective with the Prosecutors office. He was a uniform officer in the Secreat Service and an Investigator in the Prosecutors office. I can't remember ever reading a major case he was involved in. When his accomplishments are listed (the accurate ones) it should be clear he does not have the experience and knowledge as a Department Head where is his budget experience ? How many employees has he ever had under his command ? And he wants to become the head of an orginisation with 100's of employees. Also Mr. Hallett we are Correctional Officewrs not Guards, I think you have us confused with the Uniform division of the S/S.
(ED. NOTE: The Herald plainly stated "According to a release." The information contained therein was from the candidate. There is no indication that the candidate stated he was a detective. The Herald stands ready to print the opposing candidate's similar enforsements or releases, which will also state: "According to a release." It is the newspaper's intention, by printing such releases, that there be a public forum and discussion of the issues."

As a retired US Secret Service Agent I ask why the Herald continues to call Mr. Hallett a Secret Service Agent? With all due respect to my former colleagues with the Uniformed Divison of the US Secret Service, Police Officers at the White House are not Agents. It makes one wonder what else the Herald has not researched concerning Mr. Hallett's background and experience?

I AM A MEMBER OF WILDWOOD F.O.P LODGE #7 OF WHICH I RESPECT VERY MUCH FOR ALL IT HAS DONE FOR THE LAW3 ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN CAPE MAY COUNTY. HALLETT SEEKS THEIR STATE ENDORCEMENT, BUT WHY
DOSENT THE LOCAL F.OP ENDORSE HIM OR FOR THAT MATTER WHY HASN'T HE EVER BEEN A F.O.P MEMBER
I HAVE PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF GARY SCHAFFER AS A MAN , FAMILY ROLE FIGURE AND HIS PERSONAL WORK ETHICS, I KNOW OF NOTHING THAT MR HALETT
HAS GIVEN TO THIS COUNTY, SCHAFFFER HAS PROVEN HIS WORTH WITH THE FINE TRAININGG HE HAS GIVEN THE FULL TIME POLICE OFFICERS OF THIS COUNTY
THROUGH HIIM BEING THE PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING DIRECTOR OF THE COUNTY,
HE HAS ENLIGHTEN THE PUBLIC OF THIS COUNTY THROUGH THE CITIZEN POLICE PROGRAMS PRESENTED EACH YEAR., MR. SCHAFFER HAS BROUGHT MONEY INTO THIS COUNTY THROUGH THE TRAINING OF POLICE RECRUITS FROM AROUND THE STATE, HE HAS PROVEN, AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH HIS HEART IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND HIS LONG TERM LOGISTICS PLANS TO BRING OUR COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT TO BE # 1 IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY, JUST AS HE HAS DONE WITH OUR PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING CENTER, REMEMBER INFRONT OF THE PRESENT PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING THERE WERE THE TRAILERS THAT HOUSED THE OPERATIONS OF THE POLICE AND FIRE TRAINING, UNTIL MR. SCHAFFER AND THE FREEHOLDERS OF THIS COUNTY FOUND THE NEED TO MODERNIZE AND EXPAND
THE TRAINING NEEDS THE COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS AND OFFICIAL, THEY HAVE HIRED THE RIGHT MAN THEN AND THIS COUNTY HOPEFULLY WILL MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE AGAIN IN ELECTING GARY SHERIFF FOR SHERIFF, DONUTS ARE NOT IN HIS VOCABULARY.
Fri, 09/05/2008 - 9:30am
Gary Schaffer has dedicated his life to our community. He has shaped our police departments and fire departments through the great training classes that he demands from his instructors. CMC police academy is known nation wide because of his efforts. I have met hundreds of administrators and he is at the top of the list. I don't know anyone who has a greater work ethic.
Fri, 09/05/2008 - 9:15am
Looks like Mr. Shaffer has been working overtime on this board.
Thu, 09/04/2008 - 9:53pm
You won't find a candidate with more knowledge, experience and integrity than Gary Schaffer. Throughout his career he's excelled in every aspect and he'll make a great sheriff for Cape May County.
Thu, 09/04/2008 - 9:24pm
We need someone who has kept up with the times, someone still very involved with the day to day law enforcement tasks of today not someone who has been sitting at a desk eating donuts.
I plan to vote for Schaffer and so should you!
Thu, 09/04/2008 - 8:19pm
If he is sponsored by the FOP why has local lodge #7 posted any endorsment of him as our county sheriff.
Thu, 09/04/2008 - 5:59pm
With all due respect for the candidate, who in Cape May County is endorsing him? It's time for Cape May County to take back our community from outside influences.
Vote Gary Schaffer.
