WILDWOOD — The roar of hundreds of bikes will be heard throughout the Wildwoods, during the annual Roar to the Shore motorcycle rally.

An estimated 100,000 bikes are expected during the Sept. 4-7 event.

In addition to the festive atmosphere and rows of bikes parked up and down nearly every street, the event’s official Roar to the Shore Web site boasts “organized rides, a slew of vendors” and contests, such as the “best biker babe.”

For some, the draw to buy motorcycle memorabilia is strong and many businesses are only too happy to receive the throngs of bikers, who were widely regarded as being “big spenders."

Business owners, it seems, are more than willing to trade a little noise for an economic boost. Restaurants and bars hang banners welcoming the surge of black leather and chrome. Merchants on the boardwalk proudly display wares from motorcycle themed shirts, to leather jackets, to stuffed animals perched on Harleys.

A few tourists, that aren’t bikers, even travel to Wildwood just to be a spectator to all the leather, the red beer cups, the beads, the bikes and the noise out in full force.

The bikes do have mufflers, so again it is a matter of ignorance on your part. You would be surprised to learn many bikes whcih you may consider "loud" pass the DB tests. Loud pipes save lives has nothing to do with the riders ability. It is ashame that you cant embrase the fact that 150,000 bikers support your local community.

Why do so many people have to come down on bikers they way they do? It's something WE enjoy doing....do we complain about your hobbies...do we complain about how you pull out in front of us when we are right there in plain site. Do we stop and stare at you walking past us...or tell our kids not to go by you. You keep enjoying what you want and we'll keep enjoying what we WANT. Since I've been involved with bikers I've met more sincere, friendly, GOOD people, that would do anything to help you in time of need. Can't say that for ALL people though!

Actually I ride, and ride a sport bike. I've never had a problem with people not "seeing" me.
Ride defensively and you wont have to rely on exhaust pipes for your safety.
My bike didnt cost no 20,000 that a Harley would, but it was 11,000 and on the track its faster than a 20,000 dollar Harley and handles better than a 20,000 Harley. Its more maneuverable than a Harley, and in my opinion-safer.
If you guys didnt notice, the exhaust exits the REAR of the bike, therefore the sound is behind the bike! Not ahead-so people cant hear you coming till your already past. Think about it.

To all that complain about the bikers,
You are all so jealous that you can not afford a bike and spend the kind of money these people do.
Ride on.

To the person, 9-4-08, Learn how to ride. First of all the loud pipes are for *** that don't see a motorcycle coming. At least they can hear it. Its more for the people driving in a car, not us riding on a bike. Believe it or not, the loud pipes saves life's.

I just hope for a minimal amount of motorcyclists deaths this week, hopefully none, but the roads in this area are just not built for this kind of thing, and the tourists and residents just don't pay attention on the road. It doesn't help that most motorcyclists automatically expect drivers to notice them. Please drive and ride responsibly and defensively.

Roar is right...all the Harley's are so loud. Why they have no mufflers is beyond me. Maybe the WWPD should do some spot checks of DB levels from bikes. They say "loud pipes save lives" Well imagine what learning to ride could do!
