COURT HOUSE – A Court House bicyclist was injured Sept. 3 in a 10:29 a.m. accident on Route 9 in front of the post office.

According to a Middle Township police release, a call was received at 10:29 a.m. for police and rescue at the scene of a motor vehicle accident that also involved a bicyclist.

When emergency units arrived, they found that a U.S. Postal Service truck, being operated by Karl Umsheid, 50, of North Cape May, was attempting to exit a driveway, located across from the areas of the Court House Post Office.

A bicyclist, identified as Raymond Batz, 60, of Court House was traveling south on the northbound sidewalk.

Umsheid began to pull out of the driveway when his truck struck the bicyclist.

Rescue units from Middle Township Rescue Squad and paramedics from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center treated Batz, who was conscious, and who suffered a head injury.

He was later flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Trauma Unit in Atlantic City for evaluation.

The investigation is continuing, and motor vehicle summonses are pending.

Patrolman Tracey Super investigated the accident.

I have been a N.C. resident for over 30 years, however I used to live on King St. in Court House..30 years ago you couldn't pay me to ride a bike on the road through there , nevermind now.. *** the law !! common sence says ride on the sidewalk AND BEWARE OF WHEELCHAIRS, PEDESTRIANS, THE *** " MAIL MAN (person). AND ANY OTHER THING THAT MAY BE ON THE SIDEWALK !!.. But lets look at the facts ! if the bike rider had have been three (3) feet to the west( ( on the Highway ), the Postal employee wouldn't have hit him... ***!! It is a drivers responsibility to LOOK BEFORE BACKING EVERY TIME !!!!!!!!!! That could have been a child playing... much harder to see. Having said that, here's something for the biker.. YOUR 60 !! LEARN TO STOP,SWERVE, OR GET A THREE WHEELER !!! In N.C. it's mandatory for cyclists to wear helmets.. a *** little law we have to live with.. but it saves lives.. And here's some humor to wind things up.... (this is the truth) And in S.C. you do not have to wear a helmet even on a motorcycle, and until last year it was against the law to get a tatoo in S.C. Go figure !!??

That was rude. Tracey is a man. A real live man. He's a very strong good man too! Go Tracey. We're behind you.

In all seriousness, there was no legitimate purpose to print that spout off. We gotta get the community talking though right Art? Let's talk about community gossip while we are on the subject Art. Is there any good gossip going on in your family? Since you think it's so good for everyone to gossip using your smut paper maybe we should hear some stuff about you and your family. Can you shed any light Art. Or anyone out there in the community for that matter?

ref-9/3 10:19pm The bicyclist does not have every right to ride on the pavement....read the laws. They must ride in the street and same direction of vehicle travel. They must follow the same traffic laws as a vehicle...stop signs, signal turns, traffic lights etc etc etc.
With all that said I do hope he is ok

Tracey Super is a male officer.

I too hope the bicyclist is ok. No, bycyclists DO NOT have every or any right to ride on the sidewalk. That is for pedestrians who are walking or in wheelchairs. Bicyclists should be on the road for not only their safety but for others on the sidewalks. It is much harder for drivers to come out of driveways to see bicyclists whizzing by than slower walking pedistrians. Maybe the second commenter should use some common sense.

By NJ law, a bicycle must be operated on the side of the roadway in the direction that is with traffic. In other words, it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. You are also required to ride with traffic, not against it.
People must be held accountable for their actions. Both parties are at fault.
It's also a shame that a $20 helmet could have most likely prevented this man from a serious head injury. But helmets just aren't accepted and cool.

Would'nt Tracey Super be a patrolwoman ?

The bicyclist has every right in the world to ride on the sidewalk. The *** who says they don't should ride his bike on Route 9 in the street. Let's see how long he lasts with all the crazy drivers out there.

Hope the bicyclist is okay, but....Bicycles are not to be ridden on sidewalks (especially by 60 year olds - maybe kids with training wheels) and are supposed to follow NJ vehicular law. So ... on sidewalk, does not have the right of way as a pedestrian. Don't hang the postal driver. Bicyclist at fault.
