Route 47 Needs to Be Made Safer

To The Editor: This is in response to the recent article by Joe Hart about the fatal accidents along Route 47. Unbelievable — 10 years and 28 deaths in two prominent townships, and what is being done about it? We all agree that the roads we drive today weren't engineered to handle the traffic we endure especially in the summer season. We know that drinking and driving is a problem no matter what road we drive, but come on. If I were a parent of one of these unfortunate 28 people, I would want something done to prevent any more fatal accidents. Memorials on the side of the road don’t do enough. In the article, Hart noted that the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety is cracking down on intoxicated drivers and that townships were awarded $5,000 in grants to participate in this crackdown, but is it really addressing the issue of Route 47? Is something being done to make this road safer? What about the annual grant of $27,000 to fund supplemental patrols targeting aggressive drivers? Every time I travel Route 47, I don't see a police car. No one is around when people are passing me or crossing the line into my lane. Can the townships of Middle and Dennis come up with some ideas on how to make this road a safer road to drive on? What about better lighting, or more signs posting “do not pass,” or brighter solid yellow lines, reflectors on the road, or raised concrete or guard rails in the middle of the road? Something has to be done to the road itself. Traffic lights, stop signs, lower speed limits? Something other than the DOT keeping it safe by completing periodic construction projects. The realigning of the intersections and installing signals is a start anyway, but more needs to be done. Let's look at all of those red dots on the road where those fatal accidents occurred. Could you imagine if we put up large crosses at each of these fatal accident locations? I think it would creep out the tourists as they drive by. Middle and Dennis townships better start analyzing this and come up with better solutions that will actually improve the road for safer driving. It's the townships’ civic duty to protect and provide for their communities. Some questions to answer first: • What is going on, or what can be done at milepost 7 to 7.7? Three lives were lost there. • What about milepost 15.3-9? Five lives were lost there. Come on, folks, we don't want to be known as the townships with the most motor vehicle accidents or deaths do we? This is an embarrassment; a disgrace, and we pay for it with our lives. The challenge is for Middle and Dennis to investigate. Think hard and act on positive road safety ideas, not just spend grant money on a program to crack down on intoxicated drivers. The bar owners, the liquor store owners, and people in general have to work together on that. Put this money to work. Post signs, change the road, add reflectors, streetlights, blinking lights, rails, wider lanes or road bumps — something. Please. Ten years, 28 deaths! Middle and Dennis need to act now so our next 10 years can look brighter; maybe 0 deaths on Rt. 47 because of their efforts. CHRISTINE MEEHAN Rio Grande

Hey 8:07, I think the passing lane poster meant adding an extra lane in several locations to facilitate passing at selected places on the 347/47 span, not more passing zones on the existing lanes. I've seen this done in other parts of the country where environmental and budget issues preclude a full divided highway. I think that post is one of the few that offered a solution that mibht help.

Ok I read all the comments, didn't see a thing that made real sense or offerd a realistic solution. Those of you who suggested better driver behavoir are correct! but it will never happen. as for passing zones, they will only work if they are two lanes in the same direction of travel AND YOU HAVE DRIVERS OBEYING THE LAWS! SORRY PEOPLE BUT RULES ARE FOR SPORTS, DRIVING HAS LAWS! OBEY THEM! Seems to Me, A life long resident of 43 years, that it was a mistake to build RT 55 to start with. The death toll on RT 47 started to rise instantly when the north end was completed and opend to RT 42. As for extending 4 lanes all the way, GET REAL! THAT IS ABOUT THE MOST SELFISH POST YET! Nevermind the tens of thousands of residents and property owners along RT 47 Right? How about this? Dismantle and close RT 55 and put all of those selfish and rude people who don't care who they hurt or kill back on the A/C expressway and the Garden state parkway where they can limit the kills to small animals and each other? It will never happen, the state will never admit they made a mistake, The shore crowd comming here will never stand for adding a 1/2 hour of travel time to their drive, and the summer commerce will not stand for it either. It is about as likly to happen as closing up all the tourist related commerce and going back to a much more stable economy based on farming and fishing. So be carful out there and avoid 47 if you can because nothing is going to change for the better here, or anywhere else in cape may county. Seems to Me all the people moving here over the last 60 years have brought the same troubles with them that they are trying to escape. No corprate america has moved in as well. So much for this little paradise! it's over!

Don't you people GET it?? No matter how far Rt 55 reaches, it will still end up funneling into two lanes! The problem is the people. They drive drunk, under the influence of drugs, they are in a hurry to the shore...hey! How fast can we get down there? And they speed. There is a total disregard of the speed limit and other rules. Obviously rules do not apply here at the Shore. Shore equals fun, rules equal no fun. I have lived on Rt 47 for almost all my life. I have seen people pass on solid double lines, on curves, force other cars off the road, and people killed, including my daughter's best friend. I, and other Rt 47 residents, are totally sick of it. Like I said, Rt 55 is definately NOT the solution. People obeying rules, not drinking before they hit the road, and some patience, will help reduce considerably the Delsea Die Deaths.

In the absense of a completed Route 55, why couldn't the state put passing lanes in place in several locations to allow cars to pass slower drivers in designated areas? While this is not the ideal solution, it seems like it could save some lives until such time as a better alternative is worked out. I think this would go a long way toward reducing illegal and dangerous passing.

Once again, it is time for people to step up and be responsible for their own actions. You can legislate all you want, but until the public realizes that they are responsible, not the roadway, irresponsible actions by drivers cause tragic results.

Completion of Rte 55 is the only answer. It is impossible to safely take a 4 lane major highway and make that amount of traffic funnel down to a two lane road. No stop lights, lighting, police or signage will help that amount of traffic that was able to pass slowpokes at will, travel at 65 mph,had no sharp curves or stop lights. There is a bill in NJ to perform a study on completion of Rte. 55. I applaud our representatives for supporting it; but I think it is ridiculous that yet another study is being proposed. There was a study performed in 1998; what happened to it? Nothing. We in NJ have a nasty habit of trying to appease the people and give money to lobbyist companys' for studies...we study everything, for years (10 years in the case of completing Rte 55)....then we shelve the study and do a new one many years later. Sen. Van Drew says this is an uphill battle with a lot of national and international opponents to completion of Rte 55. I don't know who these groups are, but I personally don't care what their issues or complaints are. This is a matter of safety for PEOPLE.....to correct the countries most deadliest road and provide another evacuation route for a county that has one of the worst evacuation routes in the nation outside of New Orleans. There should be no issue that takes precedence over peoples lives....ever...and I resent any organization that would push for people to come in second on this issue.

Ms Meehan is absolutely correct that something needs to be done NOW, the sooner the better. Widening the road to 4 lanes (continuing 55) would also be a big help and it is time the state stepped in to do this. Eminent Domain can be a good thing!

It would be difficult to argue with Meehan's goals; however, the targets of her challange are incorrect. Rt. 47 is a state highway; owned, maintained, and engineered by The State of New Jersey. Middle, Dennis, or any other municipal or county government are unable -- by law -- to make any changes or improvements to a state highway. In fact, most changes to a municipal or county roadway have to be approved by the State D.O.T. before implementation. Changing the current configuration of SH47 must be done by the NJDOT; municipal or couinty governments are unable to. Pressure must be brought to bear on NJDOT through our State Legislators.

In response to Christine:
What makes you think that it is the responsibility of Dennis or Middle Townships? Route 47 is a State Highway, you should be calling Senator Van Drew and others concerning this situation. All your ideas will end up costing the taxpayer more in property tax if both Middle and Dennis Townships get involved in what is a issuw for the State of New Jersey and the Department of Transportation. Because our politicians drove NJ into debt due their greed I doubt anything will be done about Route 47. The answwer to this problem is very plain and simple, Route 55 should have been completed many years ago. They can build new bridges into Ocean City and complete the North end of Route 55 but nothing as usual gets done in South Jersey, especially Cape May County.
Now the State Police want $446,000 from Dennis Township to do what they were supposed to be doing anyway. I agree that State Police do not patrol this highway much at all, I believe it is because of the traffic and that they can't go 70 MPH like they do on other roads.
Everyone keeps saying it is not the road that is killing people, it is the drivers on that road, I am not so sure but I do know that people are driving worse every Summer, the end result is death.
