‘Windmills Dotted the Countryside’

To The Editor: I was pleased to read Jack Fichter’s article in the Aug. 6 Herald, and his coverage of Sen. Van Drew’s announcement to support the Fishermen’s Energy of New Jersey’s project to develop offshore wind turbines. My wife and I returned on Aug. 3 from a three-week vacation in Denmark, Germany, and the Baltic states, and were surprised to see how many windmills were being used in that area to generate power. Windmills dotted the country side on farmlands and along the coast of Denmark. We counted 55 wind turbines working to produce the energy needed for that area. We also visited a site that had eight wind turbines built on a causeway by Siemens. They added much to the beauty of the country and could not even be heard. We are far behind other countries in developing this source of energy and I hope that Van Drew and other members of the state legislature continue to back efforts by Fishermen’s Energy. We have to stop our reliance on fossil fuels and begin using wind turbines as a source of renewable energy. Our forefathers used them many years ago, and, it is time we learned from them. MAURICE H. HIGHT Cape May
