VILLAS- On the morning of August 16 at approximately 10:12 am, Lower Township Police Officers responded to a call reporting that a small child was just run over by a motor vehicle in the 100 Block of East Bates Avenue, here.
Lower Township Rescue Squad and Paramedics also responded to the incident. Investigation on scene determined that a two (2) year old female child somehow managed to get out of her fenced in front yard.
According to police, the mother of the child was just pulling away from the front of her residence when she heard a thump under her vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe.
The mother immediately exited the vehicle and observed her daughter lying under the vehicle.
The Lower Township Rescue Squad transported the child to the Cape May County Airport where she was then airlifted to Cooper Medical Center in Camden.
The child suffered numerous abrasion and bruises along with a burn on her arm, but no internal injuries.
The accident was investigated by Patrolman William Barcas and Detective Edward Dougherty of the department’s Accident Investigation Unit.

While there are some parents who should not even have a child in their care, I am sure that is not the case with this mother. When my daughter was almost two years old, I had both the front door and back sliding doors locked. To my great surprise, my daughter had unlocked the back sliding door, which she had never done before, nor did I think she even knew how, and let herself out into the backyard. Fortunately, I saw her within minutes and had to buy a safety latch for that door. So .... yes accidents do happen ..... to EVERYONE!!

You all don't know what happened! Again the Herald is a breeding ground for ill-hearted feelings, accusations and slandered comments. The Herald should be held accountable for the Heart Aches your Blogs and Spout Off causes.

Before we blame the parents and say the child should be taken away shouldn't we know the facts. Accidents happen and just thank god the child is going to be alright.

I do not know of what exactly happened in this situation, but to the commenter at 1:06pm... I have a VERY small 2 year old step daughter, she could easily not be seen if you're sitting in a large SUV (such as a Tahoe). Same goes for how she got out of a fenced in yard. My dog has found ways out of our yard, let alone a child who can open a gate... it's unfortunate, and thank goodness the child was not killed.

who are we to pass judgement on anyone. All of those passing judgement to this article look very hard, you are not perfect in anyway what so ever. I never respond to this kind of stuff. Personally I do not think we should speak for anyone other then ourselves. The news is as I thought it was. To inform everyone of what is going on in the world. And that's all it should be. Not to be given the opportunity to judge everyone in it. I'm just as pathetic as everyone who answered to this blog. I look hard every day. we need to tend to our own problems and only worry about those close to us. And please let me apologize now if I offended anyone. Like I said I never respond to this kind of thing. I just feel bad enough for the mom and all family members including that little girl.

I hope the child will make a full recovery! Someone should have been watching her to make sure she didn't go out into the street! How did her mother not see her in front of the vehicle before she pulled away?

I’m a little sick and tired of the herald not printing my comments. If you’re going to have a blog where people can respond, than let the people respond. Don’t just print what you think people want to hear.

THANK GOD the child was not killed! And we all know that a 2 year old is slick and quick! I have NO idea who these people are but just think for a quick second, this could of been your child! We all know how 2 year olds are!

Fenced in yard? Are we talking about a baby or dog? I smell something very fishy here! Who the *** was watching the baby? Either the father or mother should be charged with neglect...PERIOD!!! Did she plan on going out while the daughter was outside in a yard? Someone should take this child away ***.
