OCEAN CITY -- Two city men face extortion charges after they were arrested by Ocean City police in connection with a July 25 incident that took place in the 1000 block of the Boardwalk.
According to a release, officers responded on July 25 at 9:30 p.m. to a shoplifting investigation of a store. When officers arrived, they were met by a juvenile and his mother along with employees of that store.
It was learned through the investigation that the juvenile was alleged to have shoplifted an item from the store.
The employees of the store were then alleged to have offered the juvenile an option of paying them, the employees, money in lieu of criminal prosecution for the shoplifting incident.
That investigation led to the two employees of the store being charged with theft by extortion.
Charged were Jody J. Levchuk, 31, and Moustafa M. Zaatout, 25.
Warrants were issued for both men by Judge Richard Russell in the amount of $10,000.
Both were arrested and released after they posted bail.
Detective Mazzuza and Patrolman Cusack conducted the investigation.

Jody is one of the best poeple I know. He is hard working and outgoing in all apects of his life. To think that he would wind up in this mess is utterly reidiculous. . Now he is stuck paying out thousands upon thousands..all because some parents of a child didn't want to take responsibility for their sons actions.. What goes around comes around and Jody will get throught this and end up on top because thats what he deserves. My heart goes out to him for all the negative slander against him. If you do know him you know its all false and that he truely is an amazing person.

These comments are nothing more than a swiftboat type attack on the young shoplifter

Let's just assume for a second that the merchant DID take money from the shoplifetr in exchange for not calling the police. I now put myself in the position of the shoplifter, who should in return be thankful to the merchant for keeping him out of real trouble. Rather, the shoplifter turns the entire thing around on the poor merchant who probably has to deal with dozens of other shoplifetrs a day.
QUESTION??? How is this scenario any different than when a shoplifting incident goes to court and the defendants lawyer offers restitution to the merchant in exchange of dropping the shoplifting charges. (This happens quite frequently, AKA settling out of court)
ANSWER.... It is NO difference other than the fact that we have just saved thousands of tax payers dollars from taking up police and court time for absolute nonsense.
Unbelieveable! My heart goes out to those merchants who are facing felony charges!

"I wonder if Moustafa has relatives selling knock-offs in Wildwood."
uhhhh, i'm going to go out on a limb here and say "no". He's most likely algerian or egyptian muslim, and the accused in wildwood are definately not...and are jewish.
anyway, this is asinine. Jody is a somewhat awkward individual, but he's certainly not dumb. The accused shoplifter and his parents will certainly have Karma with which to deal IF they are pulling a stunt, which i firmly believe they are...

Where in this article does it say the juvenile was convicted of shoplifting? The alleged shoplifter is just as innocent as the merchants until proven guilty in a court of law. Way to take advantsage of children!

You have got to love our justice system! This kid commits a crime and the employees are now facing charges??? Does anyone see anything wrong with this? What kind of parents support their child commiting a crime? If you ask me, charges should be brought on the parents of this criminal in the making! Way to go, they should really get an award for parents of the year! That is why our justice system is so messed up and people now think twice about doing the right thing! I guess business owners are supposed to let their stores get looted and not do a single thing in fear of retribution??

How come the juvenile shoplifter does not deserve due process?

by doing this, these parents are basically telling their kid that it is alright to shop lift. "Don't worry well get you out of trouble by trying to put the blame on somebody else"

This is CRAZY!! If you read the report it will tell you that the police were called by the store itself. NOT the shoplifters! So basically, the employees of the store were arrested 2 weeks after the incident occurred, paid a $10,000 bail, and now face criminal charges for extortion and possible prison time. Is anyone curious to find out what happened to the juveniles who actually committed a crime and shoplifted the store to begin with???

They are not juveniles. They are 25 and 31 and the Levchuks probably own the store!

This is what is wrong in this country. A conspirator will do more time than a murderer. A sex offender will do less time than a druggie. Teenagers who rape little girls get off because of a tape that can't be admitted into evidence. First off, who is to believe the thief or workers not that their names are honorable? Something tells me that the workers will get the short end of the stick. A thief is a thief and needs to get punished as such!!!

Not that there is anything right with what the juveniles did, but if you read carefully, the employees were charged with extortion because they offered the kids a way out by paying them, not the store itself. The employees were basically stealing from their employer.

Sat, 08/16/2008 - 11:17pm
amazing.....so let me get this right! they actually had to pay 10 grands not to go to jail while the kid is probably out there robbing someone else ....again AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, 08/16/2008 - 10:15pm
amazing!!! perhaps all shoplifters should just be let go as to avoid the person who caught them not have to face charges themselves. I am sure the shoplifter did not face a $10,000 bail for his crime! Perhaps a slap on the wrist for the young fella!
