DENNISVILLE — A Ridley Park, Pa. woman was killed in a two-car crash on Route 47 at 9:52 p.m. Aug. 10.

On Aug. 10, troopers from the Woodbine Station were detailed to a fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 47, at milepost 18.5 Northbound in Dennis Township.

According to a press release, the accident occurred at 9:52 p.m., and involved two vehicles.

One vehicle, a 2006 silver Dodge Grand Caravan, was northbound, when another vehicle, a 2007 white Chevrolet Impala SS, was southbound, and for reasons unknown, crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic.

The Caravan broadsided the Impala on the passenger’s side, causing it to leave the roadway. It struck a guardrail on the northbound shoulder.

The driver of the Dodge, Randy Dougherty, 37, of Mullica Hill, was traveling with several family members.

All were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Impala, David Paytas, 19, of Holmes, Pa., was transported by Belleplain Emergency Medical Services to the trauma unit at Cooper Hospital in Camden, and was admitted in critical condition with multiple injuries.

His passenger, Katelyn Mariana, 18, of Ridley Park, Pa, was pronounced dead at the scene via telemetry at 10:15 p.m. by Dr. Katawla of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division. An autopsy is pending.

Both lanes were closed for approximately five hours, and traffic was diverted to alternate routes.

Trooper Dan Gallaudet of the Woodbine Station is conducting the investigation.

TO EVERYONE who reads,
i would like to say thank you to all who had any part in this tragic day in our lives,
even just a thought helped us so much. We don;t breathe the same without her.
please live your lives knowing that Kate was an ANGEL on earth. I knew KATE THE BEST. I shared a heart and soul with her. Some really immature things were done to me directly and it actually just showed me that I have to pray for people who don't know better. I'm not interested in your anger and Kate and I knew that sitting in your selfish anger just makes your moments on this planet wasteful. On August 7, Kate was sitting on Dave's front step crying because she missed her grandmother who died just 3 months earlier. We spent the day together, just like her and I did the last 18 years. My life will be about celebrating what she lived and breathed, all of you should just try to do a little bit to contribute to the universe in some small way. Kate's smile with her fake dimple made alot of people very happy. The only thing that helps me is knowing my mother and father were waiting for her, prayers, and each day is a day closer to us being with her again. Hope Floats,I MISS YOU KATIE POTATIE, remember the balloon incident, I'm glad you got to see the balloons sent to you, they always made you smile. shame on the few who refused to send one to her. CARMA IS A ***. I will pray for you !!!!!!!!!!!

WE LOVE YOU ,
MOMMIE

I sincerely Pray that All involved, or in any way impacted by, this tragic accident be granted Peace in their Hearts, Mind, and Soul ... That David Paytas have a speedy and full recovery, and Kate's Family find healing in their terrible loss. May Peace, Love and Light be upon ANY and ALL who read this ...

This has been the most ridiculous rampage of thoughts I have ever seen in my life. An 18 year old has died, and my cousin is fighting for his life. Instead of wasting time talking about accountability and road conditions and stigmatizing EVERYONE involved, every single one of you should be sending good thoughts to all those that were involved in this accident. You should be wishing them a speedy recovery, and if you aren't then you really should be minding your own business because this does not concern you. Katie you are going to be so missed because you were such a sweetheart. David I hope that when I come home again you will be awake and able to talk to me!! I love you so much kiddo!!!!

Sun, 08/31/2008 - 1:58am

Mr. Paytas I thank you! You are a real gentleman for your concerns of the Dougherty family. But, I do have to say that there is not a speedy recovery when this type of tragic accident occurs in your family. I t is a life time recovery.
Thoughts and prayers are with all families.

I am David Pytas' father. He is still in Cooper ICU and struggling everday in pain. As a parent, this is my worst nightmare. Kate was a sweet girl and sadly I will miss her very much. May your life with God be a good one Kate...!! I have been remiss in expressing my concerns for the Dougherty family. I am truly sorry for what has happened to your family in this tragic accident and I wish you all a speedy recovey.

Fri, 08/22/2008 - 1:20pm

Why don't we over just get over the cause of the accident.
It happen, Katie is gone & Dave is is not doing well at all.
As for the Dougherty family, Thank God they are all safe, as for the memories they have to live with That is enough heartache & pain.
Its horrible all around. It can't be changed !!!
Lets not put the blame on ANYBODY here, this is why it is called an ACCIDENT !!!!!!!!
How about at THIS POINt WE JUST ALL PRAY TO GOD That David will pull through this.
All three families need to be thought of.
God Bless you Kate & rest in peace, we all miss you

Fri, 08/22/2008 - 12:16pm

Well, now that I had read all the comments about this tragic accident. My prayers are with the Mariana family and the Paytas family.
This will not be a comment about Route 47, the road is what it is. But, I will say this, if the drivers do the speed limit, and not weave in and out of cars that are doing the speed limit because they are impatient maybe this accident would not of happened.
The driver of the van is a 37 year old family man, with a beautiful wife and 2 precious kids age 3 and 4 who were also involved with this accident. Also, his niece who is starting her freshman year in high school, a tumbler and a cheerleader was also in the van. That is 5 of my family members that were involved here. Granted, they are all still alive, but they will never get over this. They left the beachhouse and with minutes, there whole life has been turned upside down, along with all the family members.
I just do not understand how anyone could blame the driver of the van, if you have a car heading towards you in your lane the only thing to do is try and get out of his way. There is no going straight for a second or 2, he did what every human being would do, he's not the one that didn't have control of his vehicle. If he would of stayed straight, all 5 of my family members may not be here today. I thank god everyday for watching over my brother and his family. The recovery of all of them will take some time, but mentally it will take a life time to get over. So, I ask to keep the Dougherty family in your thoughts and prayers along with the Mariana & Paytas family.

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 5:11pm

Reguardless of the road conditions a driver should always have control of their vehicle. If it was me in the van, I wouldn't swerve into the oncoming lane either. If the Boy had control of his vehicle this article would never have been written. Yes your son hit a gaurd rail. The only problem is that it was in the wrong lane and that he crossed oncomming traffic. I feel for you and the other family members but the truth is that if your son had control there never would have been an accident. End of story!

I must address the comments of the young boy's mother regarding the unfortunate accident on Rt 47, at 9:52pm, August 10, 2008. Certainly I share her and the families pain caused by the critical condition of her son not withstanding the horrible death of his passenger. Unfortunately, that result will be imbedded in her son's memory forever. A tradgedy in every respect.
However and understandably the mother's comments reflect our societies continuing efforts to blame anyone and everyone. Accountability is just a word in Webster's dictionary that has little meaning anymore. To fixate on a photograph, NOT TAKEN IN REALTIME, so as to pontificate about her version of what is seen in a still photo, probably taken hours after the actual event, borders on being absurd.
The fact is that a Van travelling north on Rt 47, that had just left North Wildwood, was OBSTRUCTED by an "out of control" vehicle traveling south on 47 that according to all accounts crossed the highway into the northbound lane. The driver of that van has been driving that route since he was able to drive at the age of 18. He had never been in an accident in his 19 years of driving. The discussion regarding 'experience' is akin to a 'smoke and mirrors' circuitous argument.
The unfortunate cold hard facts are that the driver of the 'out of control' Impala SS entered the northbound lane of Rt 47, out of control, obstructed the right of way of the northbound vehicle traveling at a safe speed, as had always been the case, since he travels with small children and has driven that route accident free countless times, and caused the accident that took the life of the son's female passenger. The best outcome here is that prayer and good wishes will allow her son to get back to a normal life. I, certainly, will keep him in my prayers and wish him and the family the very best. It is and was an unfortunate accident in an area, that for years, has been somewhat of a 'death trap'.

To the person posting “Take an inexperienced driver”… First, you obviously know NOTHING about this accident or have NO concern, sympathy or compassion about the outcome of my son and his girlfriend in this horrific accident. At the age of 48, I can safely say that I AM an experienced driver and have traveled route 47 many times over the years. Any safe road as you contend can become dangerous under many different circumstances especially when you factor in heavy rain alone as only one of the conditions that night. The road is not safe and there are many statistics to prove it isn’t. Why do you support this road and condemn the driver? Why do you mention a fast car when any car can reach dangerous speeds? Have you never been involved in a motor vehicle accident that wasn’t your fault? I have. I have been rear ended at a traffic light. I have been broad sided at an intersection while my car was standing still and I have been forced off the road by a convicted drunk driver. Self accountability says you blame my son. Were you at the scene? If you were an educated person you might question the driver of the mini van that actually struck my son’s car. My son’s car didn’t hit the mini van, it hit the guard rail……!! Did you look at the picture of the accident scene? I’d like to know why the mini van turned toward the right and hit the passenger side of my son’s car when it appears they would have missed his car completely if they had just stayed their natural course in their own lane? I saw the skid marks at the scene, which began near the yellow lane divider and ended very close to the edge of their lane near the grass directly into my son’s car which clearly indicates an inexperienced driver to me. Had they kept going straight for a second or two or even slightly veered away from my son’s car as an experienced driver should have done they would not have hit my son’s car at all! Kate would probably be still be alive today and my son David wouldn’t be in a coma fighting for his life...!! As for the road at the scene of the accident, just ask the closest neighbor who will attest to the continuous accidents he sees on a daily basis. The house I grew up in PA was near an intersection that had no traffic light when we first moved in. There were accidents there almost once a week and many were very serious including two fatalities that I know of. My family fault for a traffic light with fellow neighbors and since the light was installed there have been almost NO accidents since and the few that have occurred have been minor. So, roads CAN be dangerous and this road has a history killing and maiming it’s drivers. God bless Kate and my son David…

This is coming from a family member of Katie Mariana. She was a great person. Me and her were born 2 months apart. We grew up together, and were closer than a brother and sister could ever be. You people need to let her rest. Our family is surely saddened by our loss. She was one of the greatest people in the world that you could ever meet and she didnt deserve to die like this. She was too young and had way to much to live for. She was about to start college next week, and now her dream is long gone.

We Are Going To Miss You Kate...

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 8:41am

For all of you commenters that are making unnecessary comments about the reporters, headlines, speeding, inexperienced drivers, etc, why don't you all just stop and think about the real issue, which includes all victims of this tragedy. Kate Mariana was an 18 year old girl who was someone's daughter, sister, niece, cousin, granddaughter, friend, and girlfriend. David Paytas is a 19 year old boy who has all family members and friends worried, thinking that he may not make it either. As for the other driver and passengers, my prayers are with you, as well. No one knows for sure what caused the accident, so before you are quick to make judgements and accusations about an inexperienced driver driving a "fast car" with his girlfriend, why don't you simply send your condolences and move on. You are obviously someone who has no connections to this story, other than coming across it on this website. Apparently accidents happen on RT 47 frequently, so don't criticize the way David Paytas was driving simply because you read that he was a 19 year old in a 2007 Impala with his girlfriend. I am not blaming the road, the state police, the weather, or the driver for this tragic accident. I am simply sending my condolences to each victim and their families. Kate will be truely missed by everyone in Ridley Township, along with many others that knew and loved her. As for Dave, he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. It is very sad to know that Ridley has lost yet another young person too early,

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 8:01am

To the person that posted that the driver was inexperienced, inattention, excessive speed and fast car..................NO ONE knows the circumstances that caused this whatsoever....enough of this as it will never bring that girl back to her loved ones and make the young man better and out of the hospital. WERE YOU THERE to witness any of this to make these assumptions? One thing that is true is history repeats itself as far as past accidents in that area.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 8:21pm

Take a young, inexperienced driver, put him and his girlfriend in a fast car, factor in heavy traffic, driver inattention and excessive speed and this is what happens. Any amount of complaining about the road won't bring the dead girl back or get the young man out of the hospital. The State Police or Department of Transportation or lawmakers didn't cause the accident, the DRIVER did. Note that the father, in his attempt to justify the driver's operation of the vehicle, listed a contributing factor: traveling too fast for conditions. Just because it is a tragic situation doesn't mean that common sense and self accountability get tossed to the wind.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 5:11pm

R.I.P Kate Mariana, and Dave Paytas hope you pull through. Ridleys prayers our with you.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 12:14pm

*** Secondly, i love how some people blame the road... as if the road did something wrong to make the accident happen... Last time I looked most roads don't move...

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 10:38am

To the Paytas Family and Mariana family my prayers and my heart are with you all. I know this is the hardest thing a parent could ever go through and I am so sorry to all of you for that. I am so sorry for your loss to the Mariana family...To the Paytas Family..please have faith and hope that Dave pulls through.....he is a fighter and has alot of strength in his heart to pull through. A family member of mine was also in a car accident coming home from Wildwood and was transported to Cooper where he was on life support for a month. My experience with Cooper during that time ...they gave the most outstanding care in trauma care.....they were wonderful.
No one knows the circumstances as to why this happened ...it could have been the weather conditions or that curve it self where there is no signs posted for a dangerous curve.....all of that could have been a factor. Apparently, after reading some of what local people wrote that live in that area or vicinity....there has been several accidents in that area. Once and for all something needs to be done before another life is taken. Once again......my heart and prayers are with you all.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 2:09am

God Bless Kate Mariana, baby you are dearly missed. Pray for the Paytus Family & all their pain, stay strong. God bless the other survivor's! Hope Paytus make's it through. Rest Easy Kate; Miss you.

You need to get a life, Stop asking about the RADIO. Does it really matter? I think NOT. A young lady has lost her life in this accient and a young man is in critical condition and all your worried about is the radio. You need to grow up. I admit it was funny on the first one, but now its just plain STUPID, GET A LIFE.

We are all waiting for the kids to get back to daycare, your classmates ask about you often. Hope you feel better soon. To the Paytas family hope that your son pulls through this, one life lost is enough.

Wed, 08/13/2008 - 2:15pm

I don't understand why people keep blamming Rt. 47.It is not the roads fault that all these accidents happen it is the way people drive on this road. People drive like manics. They pass in no passing zone, speed, and just don't pay attention.

The people who are worried about this girl being pregant need to get a life. The Herald is the only ones that go and reports on all these stories at all hours of the night. The AC Press and others don't even come close. Give them a brake the story is about this horrific fatal crash and the victims~

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 2:37pm

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 1:02pmSeveral other news agencies such as the news wire Breaking News Network also reported this to be a pregnant female.

According to another post 08/11/2008 - 2:21pm two calls went out at the same time.

It’s certainly possible that myself and other news agencies made a mistake on one minor detail of this tragedy. If we did we are all very sorry!

As far as talking to people on the scene. We are rarely able to interview official sources on scene they prefer to send us a release after.

WHEN is something going to be done about Route 47????

My father in law and mother in law were in a horrible accident on this road.

My future son in law was killed at MM 14 3 years ago. Strangely enough he was stopped not even 10 minutes before for not wearing his seatbelt and the cop let him go. Maybe if they did a breath test on him, he would of been arrested, but at least he would of been alive!!

I will not drive that road anymore!! Ever!!

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 2:07pm

Did the car roll? Why is the roof on the road? Also, is the radio still intact?

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 1:08pm

The easiest way to fix the problem of rt47 is to make Jeff Van Drew and the State finish rt 55. rt 47 is now a local road, not a highway, finish 55 and stop the killing!

One Dead, Pregnant 16 Year-Old Critical and Five Others Injured After Motor Vehicle Accident
accident | 57 min 6 sec ago | Comments 0
By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.
DENNISVILLE- New Jersey State Police are currently on scene with the fatal accident investigation team investigating a two-vehicle accident on Route 47 at mile marker 18.5.
The Herald has confirmed one fatality.
A pregnant 16 year-old female was found unconscious and was taken to Cooper Trauma by ground and is currently in critical condition.
Five people were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
A Herald reporter is one scene so stay tuned for photos and more information.

Above is the story the Herald initially posted regarding this accident and while gathering "preliminary details...from a scene on a major story...from police, fire and EMS radio transmissions" is an acceptable standard in spot reporting in order to "inform the public quickly on breaking news," headlining a story with "pregnant 16 year-old critical " is NOT.

Yet another accident on Rte. 47, what a surprise! I blame the state. Of course, there will continue to be many accidents on Rte. 47. That is to be expected when you take a major multi lane highway of Rte. 55 and try to funnel all that traffic into one lane. The state continues to "fix" the problem by adding more traffic lights, changing the timing on existing traffic lights and eliminating the majority of passing zones. They are a joke, and have not done anything to help the flow of traffic. The only "real fix" is to finish Rte. 55. and allow locals to use Rte. 47. Until the state does this, there will continue to be many accidents and fatalities. That is the bottom line.

"The driver of the Impala, David Paytas, 19, of Holmes, Pa., was transported by Belleplain Emergency Medical Services to the trauma unit at Cooper Hospital in Camden, and was admitted in critical condition with multiple injuries". no he wasn't! he was taken to south jersey regional center for evaluation and then flown to cooper trauma by south star! even the updated story is still wrong!

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 12:44am

My son David J. Paytas Jr. was the driver of the white impala. We do not know the specific cause of the accident but have learned a few things. I went with David's mother and his younger brother Michael to the scene Monday afternoon. He was heading back to wildwood and in my best effort to recreate the accident from the evidece at the scene I believe he either lost control in the rain around the curve and hydroplaned into oncoming traffic or most likely came around the curve and found traffic backed up from the traffic light to the beginning point of the curve and was unable to stop in time and swerved onto oncoming traffic to avoid rear-ending the last vehiclein in the backup.

I was able to get the closest neighbor to come with us to the scene to give us his insight. He believes my assumptions to be strong possibilities and told us about the numerus and on-going accidents that repeatedly occur around this curve and also along other parts of route 47 which made me sick to hear. I don't think there were any street lights in that area but I can't say for sure. I am also not sure if there are any signs warning of a dangerous curve in the direction he was coming from either. If I am right then I absolutely think there should be both to help prevent furure fatal accidents....!!

David was taken to South Jersey Medical Hospital and was then flown to Cooper Trauma Center. His girlfriend kate Mariana of 5 years sadly did not make it and state police said she was pronounced dead at the scene. We hope and pray she did not suffer at all. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with Kate and her family. David loved Kate very much and does not know at this time that she passed. He is still unconscious and in critical condition.

I will NEVER ride this rode again and I hope something will be done to make it safer for those who do.

If anyone witnessed this accident and can provide information it would be greatly appreciated.

so..this is the third accident in a two month period that a person got killed ON 47. its not the road people, it really isnt. it is the people driving. ive lived off of 47 my whole life. 3 miles north from where Craig died, and 3 miles south where Joe (i think his name is) died. my parents have lived off this road for 25 years. now, if it was the road causing these accidents, i think we would have got into an accident a long time ago. the people driving on this road are careless, and speeding. and THAT causes all these accidents. not to mention 2 of 3 involved alcohol or drugs. we need some staties on the road radaring. thank you and have a nice day.

I beleive that all you people who are worried about how the reporter is doing his or her job should be more worried about the young teen girl who didnt even get to enjoy her life.. both dave and kate were and are friends of mine and and they need prayers.. they're families need prayers. they both loved eachother very much and would have tryed to protect eachother from any harm. nobody knows but they're family and friends what they are going through...so keeping your rude uncalled for comments to yourself wouldbe the best thing. dave will suffer through life knowing what happened that night for the rest of his life..that is if he makes it through safely. kate was a wonderful friend and the most caring person you could meet ..she had a smile that could light up a room when she walked in. May God Bless her family and Daves family through this tragic time. they need all the prayers they can get. God Bless you both.. and for all the others that were in the accident as well... my prayers are with you's and your families.. <3 CML..God Bless you Kate ..you will reamain in our hearts forever. We Love you!

*** the story the Herald initially posted regarding this accident and while gathering "preliminary details...from a scene on a major story...from police, fire and EMS radio transmissions" is an acceptable standard in spot reporting in order to "inform the public quickly on breaking news," headlining a story with "pregnant 16 year-old critical " is NOT.

Spot reporting from a scene of an accident, when done correctly, involves a reporter talking to sources at the scene and relaying to the reader what he sees before him . If you did not see a pregnant teen unconscious and/or transported from the scene, you should not have reported it AS FACT ("A pregnant 16 year-old female was found unconscious and was taken to Cooper Trauma by ground and is currently in critical condition"). This shows obvious inexperience and minimal effort on the part of the reporter.

At the very least you should have respected your field and used the words afforded to you in this occupation, those being "possibly" or "reportedly" and then indicated that information was not confirmed by authorities.

The bottom line is, you made a mistake and should admit it, rather than include in your post the following: "All details on this accident were reported from the scene, are accurate and may not be listed at this time in this initial press release we have obtained from the State Police."

All details on this accident...reported from the scene...are NOT ACCURATE, and there will be no secondary release from the state police to support initial reports that a pregnant teen was involved.

Rather than clarify the error you made in your first report, you have instead chosen to replace that post with information taken directly from the official state police press release on the accident and completely ignore that you provided misinformation.

There would be fewer attacks on your reputation as a journalist if you simply admitted to your readers that a mistake was made and perhaps took a few sentences to explain why or how it happened.

(ED. NOTE: Mr. Scheeler reported what was monitored on the police radio. The later posting from the State Police release stated facts that were unavailable at the time of the original post. That was not a reflection on the reporter. Those who wish to join the Herald as citizen journalists, to broaden our scope of reporting, should contact the editor. To the 9:10am post.

Preliminary details reported from a scene on a major story are gathered from Police, Fire and EMS radio transmissions in efforts to inform the public quickly on Breaking News.

These details are updated with a press release from an official source such as the prosecutors’ office. That source is also in many circumstances are reporting preliminary details pending a complete and thorough investigation that may not include reports from all agencies involved and some agencies that are legally prohibited from releasing details that would hinder an ongoing investigation.

Frequently the Herald is provided with several additional press releases over time updating the condition of victims, pending or filed criminal charges and finally the outcome of investigations when appropriate.

All details on this accident were reported from the scene are accurate and may not be listed at this time in this initial press release we have obtained from the State Police.

Please check back in the next few days for any additional information released.

How can a "road" kill someone is what I would like to know. Can a road REALLY cause an accident? I don't think so. "People" cause accidents by careless driving, speeding,DWI,not paying attention. Unless the road has an actual hazzard in the driving path a road is not the cause of an accident. I use this portion of 47 every day and it's a well maintained, smooth, well marked roadway. I do however see a lot of crazy drivers on it!

I live on that part of Route 47 and people always drive too fast around that curve. I don't think the State Police patroling the area would make anyone drive any slower, and it is a dark area, and if drivers aren't paying attention, off the road they go. Before the guard rail was installed, a 17 year old died driving into the lake. People are always in a rush to get to where ever they are going, I don't blame the police for anything, speed limit signs are up for a reason, and if drivers go over the limit, it isn't the fault of the NJSP.
