Our Forefathers Handed Us A Mighty Nation — Can We Improve On That?

Recently I read some comments of the Prime Minster of Great Britain in which he suggested that America and Great Britain should seek to work closer together, given our common language and heritage.
A few weeks after I read his comments, we celebrated our independence from Britain, which makes me question whether independence from them is a good thing or a bad thing. In trying to answer that question, it brings to mind our own civil war, between the North and the South.
Even my wife, who is a dyed-in-the-wool Southerner, is glad they lost. Had the U.S. split up in 1865, there is no way we would have prospered to the degree that we have.
So, if it is better that we did not break up after the Civil War, would it be advantageous to work toward reunification with Britain?
Europe has seen the benefits our unity has brought us and has been working successfully for over 50 years to duplicate our success.

If over the course of the next number of decades, we, the Brits, Canada, Australia and New Zealand were to pull back together, we should be able to enhance our prosperity and security.
How crazy of an idea is this? Well, we were united once, and we have a common heritage and share the same language. Europe can’t say that, and yet they are pulling together for common advan-tage.
It is worth asking the question.
