WILDWOOD -- The Coast Guard suspended its search July 13 at 7:01 a.m. for a missing 28-year-old man, Juan Moore, of Philadelphia, who disappeared July 12 while swimming with two friends, one of whom died, about 100 yards off the beach near Schellenger Avenue
The man with whom Moore was swimming, was also a Philadelphian, Ismael Lopez, 36. He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation by rescuers, but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The Coast Guard received a call at 7:15 p.m. from a member of the Wildwood Police Department reporting a swimmer was missing after being caught in a riptide with two other swimmers.
The other two swimmers were recovered by friends and local rescue crews. A third member of the swimming party was reported in good condition.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May, rescue helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, members of the Wildwood Police Department and the Wildwood Beach Patrol searched for Moore.

What other locals here are saying I think is the we locals just have a better respect and understanding of the ocean .I have been swimming off that very same beach for 40 years ,and would never swim after the guards have left unless I was with other experianced "ocean"swimmers. If you look at the water temp. and the condition of the water anyone with any ocean exp. would know ,Don't go in !! And about the closing of the beach . Every beach entrance and lifeguard stand has the hours of protection Posted on them .All you need to do is take the time to read them .
Now dont get me wrong ,We as a community want to let the families who lost their loved ones Our hearts go out to you .
But people cant blame the City of Wildwood .We have one of the safest beach's in the world

my apologies, the term riptide is recognized in dictionaries....just not by the experts who deal with or study them. (and by experts, i dont mean encarta)

I'm not sure what a "shoobie" is, and the local fellow at 8:46 p.m. may not spell very well, but his point was missed by the out-of-towner at 3:17 p.m. -- he wasn't bragging about the swimming abilities of the locals, he was saying that people should use good judgment when they swim in the ocean; that is, heed warnings and don't swim when the lifeguards are gone. Level of education isn't relevant here.

You enter the ocean at your own risk. And you can't close the beach once the lifeguards get off. A lot of people wouldn't even listen.

***... we were just on vacation there! Same beach, but we were there on Friday. Horrible. Didn't hear about it until now, when my mom emailed me this story today. I definitely felt the strong current on Saturday (we were on a beach at Cape May at the time), but wow. Eerie, how close anyone - including me - was to death. We left at the same time the lifeguards did, which apparently was very smart.

For the local know it all that posted at 8:46 pm thanks for letting us shoobies know we are well below the ability of the fine swimmers that you locals are. I didn't know you had to be from a shore town to be able to swim in the ocean with confidence. I can clearly see that in your grade school you spent far more time in the pool then you did in English class

to herald: regarding your headline...there is no such thing as a riptide, they are called rip currents.
(ED. NOTE: Thanks for the comment. Here's a dictionary definition: rip·tide n
a strong narrow tide that opposes other currents and produces turbulence, especially sea water that rushes seaward after incoming waves mount up on the shore.
Also called rip 1 v. 2
Also called tide-rip

First, the incident ocurred at around 7:15 pm - not after dark. We saw the emergency units from the boardwalk at that time. The fact is many people choose to stay on the beach or in the water after the lifeguards finish their work. It's just unfortunate and sad that these men got caught in the current.
It is also a stark reminder that the ocean is an unforgiving natural element.

Either way, there were still no guards on duty at that time.

well first off the people at the beach were told to not go past there knees for this reason i know saturday when i went they yelled multible time at kids as well as adults . For the shoobis they think they know everything i know when i was in grade school the public pools had swimmng lessons maybe the out of towners should start listening to us when we know whats goin on the shore shouldnt be a play ground like shoobies think no life gaurd dont swim thats the most common sense man isnt stronger than mother nature all the storms going on out by the caribian are effecting our beaches and i wouldnt want to swim anyways for the chance of going under and drowning summer is for fun not death this should be a lesson to the people who are very hard headed

I was in Wildwood on vacation when this happened....I have to say that I spent the last night of my vacation praying they would at least find the bodies if there was no hope of any rescue. All night i watched from my hotel room as the search went on and it broke my heart to think of the family and loved ones. They have just had their whole life changed in one minute..My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this horrible accident. Yes they should have been smarter about thier choices but not one of us can say that we have never done something without thinking of the consiquences at least once in our lives. Thank you to all who risk their life daily to help save the life of another.

The beach should be closed when their is a ripcurrent??? Well then we better close the SAND off everyday due to the natural activity of the ocean.

the beach closes at 10pm not 6. the lifegaurds go off duty at 5.

The beach closes at 6:00pm when the lifeguards go off duty. This really shows why you should not go in the water with out lifeguards being there. When people come down here on vacation, they really need to bring their common sense with them. This is not your little local swimming hole, this is the Atlantic Ocean with so many dangers. This is why there are lifeguards, to protect you from bad rip currents & undertows. So many people who don't understand loose their lives. So please leave the stupidity at home and ONLY go in the ocean near lifeguards. I truely feel sorry for the families who just lost their loved ones.

This is why the beach should be closed when something like ripcurrents is going on. I mean they have this man who is no longer alive and another man who is no longer alive in AC from the same thing.
