Architectural rendering of fire hall addition.

VILLAS — Villas Fire Company broke ground July 11 for an addition to their fire hall that will add a second floor to the building.

Lt. Bill Howard said the second floor would feature an “A” shaped roof. He said the remodeling would be done in two phases with the interior second floor being completed as funds become available.
The second floor will have offices, a meeting room and small recreation area, he said.
The first floor will house a locker room, new restrooms, small office and a radio room.

The current building was constructed in 1961 with a bingo hall added in 1965.
Howard said the addition should be completed in six months to one year.

Breaking ground with ceremonial shovels were Clarence Howard, who has been a member of Villas Fire Company for 64 years, Jeffrey H. Gott, senior vice president of Crest Savings Bank, which is financing the addition and Lower Township Mayor Walter Craig.

DOUGLASS FOR MAYOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thu, 07/24/2008 - 7:10am

Safety is the most important thing to all of us. We need a Mayor that understands the criminals and the needs of our police department. We are fortunate to have 2 former police officers running in November for Mayor; Harvey Roach and Mike Beck. Both are also experienced councilmen. They are the better choice for Mayor.

Tue, 07/22/2008 - 5:13pm

Why do we need a mayor that understands the police? We need a mayor that understands how to be a MAYOR!!! Lower township does not need beck or roach. You think it's bad now, go ahead vote for them and then we will read all your complaints next year.

I am A firefighter and i know that this Addition is not being built with taxpayers dollars it is being built with the money that the villas fire company has worked hard for so stop complaining that it is a waste. Why don't you stop posting on every single comment in the herald and find a life

For the health, safety and welfare of all the people in Lower Township we need a Mayor that understands criminals and our police, who could be more knowledgeable on law enforcement than a retired police officer? Mike Beck and Harvey Roach are retired police officers. Mr. Douglass, might be good at changing the alternators in the township vehicles, from his experience as Director of the Motor Pool at Bayside; but he has no law enforcement experience. Beck or Roach are the only two candidates to choose for the safety of the people.

oh geeeze another one throwing the " Vietnam Veteran" card down. does being a veteran make you perform mayor duties any better than the other guy or a non-veteran? do you suppose there are no veterans that lie, steal, or cheat ? just because your a vet
does not make you any better or worse than anyone else.

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 2:35pm

to the 4:37 PM Post....you chastise Mike Beck and then state..."Please think sensible and voter for Mr. Douglass. " You have to be kidding me!!!!!!! Mike Beck was a dedicated Police Officer....a Vietnam Veteran....he's served his country and community well. ON THR OTHER HAND....DOUGLASS HAS THE BACKBONE OF A JELLYFISH...NEVER SERVED A DAY IN THE MILITARY AND BARELY LASTED A DAY IN LAW ENFORCEMENT......HE'S NO HERO....HE'S A ZERO. I don't agree with many things that Beck has done....but I'll take a veteran over a *** any day of the week. GET USE TO IT....MAYOR MIKE BECK

In regards to my comment which was left on 07/14/08, the Lower Township Taxpayers Associatio should really also insist on seeing audit reports. When the fire company hired an accountant to audit the books, they hired a C.A. and not a C.P.A, this is because a C.P.A is required to report any theft of monies to the proper authorities. Don't get me wrong I am still an active and dedicated firefighter in the community, but disagree very much with what occurs on the administrative side. Also the person that found discrencies during the interal audit is in fact now the chairman of the fire commission. So what else is being hidden. Also only members in the clic are told what goes on.

My name is Micheal Brannon and I am the President of the Villas Volunteer Fire Department. Here is the press relaease that we ask some newspapers to be put in before our ground breaking . And I quote - The Villas Volunteer Fire Comany along with Crest Saving Bank will be holding a ground breaking ceremony on Thursady July 10, 2008 at 4:30 pm, for a major expansion and upgrade of their current Fire Station. The project which has been in the making since 1999. will have the old flat roof removed and a new A-Frame roof installed. With the A-Frame roof, the company will add office and meeting room space on the new second floor. The upgrades will bring new handicap accessible bathrooms for the public during events and much needed lockers rooms for the firepersonnel on the first floor. The best news is that the expandsion will be at no cost to the tax payers funds are not directly budgeted for this project. The firepersonnel are proud to report that this funds for this project have been as a result of many years of saving, the cooperation of Crest Saving Bank and are a direct result of the community and their support during fund raising events. Anyone wishing to attend may do so. the event will occur on the front lawn of the Fire Station. unquote.
Any one wishes to call me please do so 886-1611 ext 1.
Thank you Michael Brannon President of Villas Volunteer Fire Company

First of all I commend the VIllas Fire Co. for making the improvements to their facility. The new look will improve moral thus providing more interest leading to a better service to the community. Congrats on being #1 in the township. As for you squatters that think it is good idea for Mike Beck to cut police, ask him who will provide the patrols in the nice Mulligan Park (across the street form his house)where the drug dealers and knife weilding juveniles play. And next time an intoxicated driver drives through a crowd watching a hockey game maybe Mike will come out of house and use his patrolman skills that he used his entire career in Phila.. I support our fine Police Dept. 100%. Chief Donohue and his men and women set the bar for the entire county. How would you like if your wife and kids were in WaWa when that dirt bag pulled a knife and no plice were available because of Mr. Beck cuts. Public Safey is not the place to make sacrafices.
Please think sensible and voter for Mr. Douglass.

First, congratulations to the Villas Fire Co for finally upgrading your building. Also thank you for doing it the right way, not using taxpayers money during this current financial time, you went out and got donations and took a loan out.

As the posters that turned this "nice" story into an attack column on topics that are not related to the story, shame on you. You should be embarressed. This seems to be one of the problems in Lower, people not working together, but attacking each other. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but sometimes it's better to keep your opinion to yourself or to wait for the proper forum.

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 8:32pm

Hey 7/14/08 3:35pm, you must be an ***. That's all that should be said about you.

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 7:24pm

I wish the crest savings bank all the best. do they and the taxpayers know about all the money that was internally embezzled during the years of 1997 to 2000, for the tune of 63,000 dollars. i think this should be checked into before granting any loan. Also they should ask to see the audits.

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 6:53pm

Douglass for MAYOR,,,,,how about DOG CATCHER,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ONLY ONE CHOICE FOR
MAYOR.........HARVEY ROACH

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 3:35pm

That drawing is terrible, is there any doors to the fire house. The second floor will be added so they can have weddings and such and serve minors

Mon, 07/14/2008 - 1:00pm

mike beck, philly cop extraordinare....a cop who worked in a city with, let's just say, not a firm grip on violence. a cop who, with such administrative skill, never climbed the company ladder past, what rank was it? nah, sorry mike, when it comes to true local matters, shut your carpet-baggin mouth. if you want to improve the area, move back to the crime-riddin city you left.

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 6:24pm

If the township cuts the number of cops, and it impacts their response time, maybe next year they can get a free teletransporter from the government and just beam themselves to wherever they are needed.

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 3:57pm

Douglass for Mayor!!!

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 1:06pm

Well, since this thread turned into a Mike bashing I am more than happy to chime in. First off let me say that this fire department needed to do something with that building. The old building was looking pretty sad from the outside. The new one will help improve the look of the area which needs all the help it can get. It was going to happen eventually so stop complaining. Now, back to Mike. I would love to see how you people feel if he wins this election, cuts the police force and it then takes 30 minutes for the police to answer your call. What you people do not understand is that the police department is understaffed as it is. We could definitely used more cops. With the cuts, good luck getting any protection and with crime running rampant. As far as how much they make, i think they should be getting paid double. They are out there every day so the citizens of this town are protected. I believe that is worth any price. Sure, it's your tax money but get over it. Tax money is used for things in the township, not saved like all you people seem to think.

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 12:32pm

You Lower cops are unreal. Spread your rumors and lies elsewhere, no one is buying your baloney here. Oh by the way, Mike Beck will be winning the election and I see you have already started your whining.

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 9:37am

for crying out loud wah wah wah our tax dollars are being wasted i'm a volunteer fire fighter and darn proud of it stop whining and complaining think of it this way if your house was up in flames and fire fighters showed up and put out the fire you would greatly appreciate it if you pass the villas fire house the sign says financed by a bank not our tax dollars get the facts straight before whining and complaining

Sun, 07/13/2008 - 6:57am

Right...we like Mike....8 years of Mike solved nothing...so lets give him 4 more so that he can rip apart our Police Dept, our Volunteer Fire Depts, our Recreation Programs....

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 8:51pm

10:57 am The only waste in the township is people like you!! Vote mike in, yeah he will solve all of the problems. Please don't make me laugh.

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 6:30pm

Jealousy, lack of self esteem and just outright mean spiritness is just a teriible way to go through life. The fire company helps build and mold fime young men in our community. A large portion of our fire company are fine young men under 25 years of age, who are risking their lives everytime the whistle plows. When I hear such negative comments on issues many of you know nothing about or are just trying to be hurtful, I vision that person who is just sitting in their house looking out their window, with no friends, and knows not how to love, respect or care about other human beings. Kindness is pricesless, even the blind can see it. Lets start to be more thouhgtful of one another. The world be be a much nicer place.

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 1:38pm

I am really tired of hearing people complain about the tax dollars hard at work. Its a Volunteer fire company and they are doing this by donations. If this was something for your house with the fire company then you woudlnt be complaining. So the next time you open your mouth be sure you can take what everyone else is going to dish out to you. Volunteers are a great thing to have in this world.

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 10:57am

WHO'S GOING TO PAY FOR THE HEAT AND AIR TO COOL THAT HUGE BUILDING. THE TAXPAYERS. LOWER TAXPAYERS NEED TO UNITE AND VOTE MIKE IN OFFICE. CUT TAXES, CUT THE OVERPAID COPS AND CUT WASTEFUL SPENDING LIKE THIS BUILDING. AND TO YOU 9:15PM, IT STILL COMES OUT OF THE TAXPAYERS POCKETS. AND AS FAR AS THE LTTA, I AM PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE ORGANIZATION THAT WILL PUT A STOP TO THE WASTEFULNESS THAT HAS ENGULFED US. YOU DON'T NEED ANOTHER BUILDING !!

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 10:55am

To the 10:14PM spouter. The LTTA does also do volunteer work; our members drive the van that takes our disabled veterans to the hospital in Vineland several times a week for treatments and doctors appointments.

Sat, 07/12/2008 - 10:48am

It's funny, I never read one thing or heard a word from any representative of the LTTA, who said they were against this. Maybe that is because those that really are in the LTTA ARE NOT OPPOSED to this addition to the Villas Fire Company. No tax money is being utilized to fund this addition. Moneys were collected from private donations and fund raisers and through the sweat and dedication of our wonderful volunteer fireman. We appreciate all they do for the residents and this is yet another shining example of our volunteer resident firemen helping their neighbors. To the ladies and gentlemen of the Villas Fire company, the LTTA wishes to say thank you for doing this without using tax dollars.

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 10:14pm

HOW ABOUT THE PEOPLE FROM THE TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION MAYBE GET INVOLVED INTO THINGS LIKE THE FIRE DEPTS. OR EVEN VOLUNTEER AT THE SCHOOL OR ANYTHING AT ALL. THEY HAVE TOO MUCH TIME AND NOTHING IMPORTANT TO DO I AM TIRED OF HEARING THEM IF A BETTER JOB CAN BE DONE DO IT. WHY DON'T ONE OF THEM RUN FOR OFFICE? THEY CAN FIX EVERYTHING START HELPING WITH THE PROBLEMS NOT CAUSING MORE.

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 10:01pm

Right on bro....another banner for the LTTA to fly....cut the cops....*** the VOLUNTEER firefighters...right on POWER TO THE PEOPLE......

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 9:15pm

1:44 pm Your opinion stinks. Before you flap your lips get the facts. The fire company owns the building and is using their fund raising and donations to pay for the much needed improvments. If you think the taxes are to high, the ferry runs daily!!!!!!!!!

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 7:45pm

this is not being built with taxpayer dollars. it is being built with generous donations
and hard work

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 3:14pm

Fri, 07/11/2008 - 1:44pm
