ERMA — Lower Township Police Chief Edward Donohue announced that the Department of Homeland Security will provide the Lower Township police with a Real Time Video Surveillance System through the U.S. Army’s Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program, or CEDAP.

Donohue stated that the police department applied to the Army’s CEDAP Program last year for the system.

The system consists of several cameras that can feedback live video to police headquarters or vehicles from several miles away. Donohue states the system will be utilized for police surveillance operations, tactical operations, and to monitor critical infrastructure as needed. For security reasons, Donohue would not reveal the exact number of cameras or their complete capabilities.

Donohue noted that the system is free of charge at no cost to taxpayers.

Lower Township Police Officer Kevin Lewis will fly to Raleigh, N.C. in August to be trained on the new system. The officer’s flight, lodging and meals are all covered by the program, again at no cost to taxpayers.

Donohue noted that this is the third time that the department has utilized this program and has previously received Thermal Imaging Night Vision Equipment and Fiber Optic Cameras from the program, all at no cost.

If we had this technology years ago maybe the Mark Heinbaugh story would have had a happy ending. How about the criminals caught with thermal imaging cameras who were hiding in someones dark back yard, or the alzhiemer patient who wandered into the woods at night! Yes,in someway (federally), we have contributed to this .... but if it is available to our department, to help protect us, shouldnt they apply for and get the equipment? Better yet, we should just contribute and let all the other departments get it. We would still be giving and not getting a thing. How many victim have wished they had video or some type of proof that what they claim actually happened? Video has been here for a long time and it should be used when needed. They are not going to look into houses. With the inflow of criminal activity in the north end of our township due to lower income housing being ripped down elsewhere, and the drug problems escelating, I'm glad. Maybe they will catch the bad guys before they influence more of lower township children. Don't be so concerned unless you have something to hide!

This is free initially but you pay through the nose under a contract year after year. Thermal imaging night vision, Fiber Optic cameras, and real time Video Surveillance System; what's next, heat seeking missiles and launchers on tanks?
Oh well, if it helps nail the hardened criminal dirt bag kids running their quads on the streets and woods and gathering with their friends on corners, I guess you have to bring out the big guns.

Too bad we didn't have this video surveillance system a couple of years ago. The chief could have put them in the police cars then he would have known where officer BM was and what he was doing for all those years instead of what he was suppose to be doing.

By FREE OF CHARGE AT NO COST TO THE TAXPAYER, does MR. Chief Donahue mean free for a limited time, then the taxpayers pay a monthly or annual maintenance/subscription fee?

Since the regular dirt bags of Lower Township don't read the Herald "On-Line" nor have the ability to type in this blog, it is only fitting to "know" that the people below complaining of "Big Brother" or "No Cost To Taxpayers" are just liberals who have an ax to grind against the Township or The Police. The dirt bags who bring down the quality of life in Lower Township should be the ones complaining; but as always it's the liberals whom by making such statements as printed below allow and embrace dirt bag behavior! By the way he is The Chief; not Mr. Donohue. Have a little respect! And since most of you liberals are spearheading a campaign to cut as many jobs as you can; including the Lower Township Taxpayer Association President who goes to Township Meetings saying she loves cops but blogs in this papers Spout-Off Forum that Lower Township has too many cops! Heres the deal people; Since we are going to cut cops in Lower Township the cameras will be needed! So, lead an honest Christian life (or Atheist Life for the Liberals) and Big Brother will be there to help you. On the other hand, lead a life full of criminal intent and Big Brother will be there to help you to jail.

And in closing, if you don't like Lower Township, there are several roads out of town.
But as you leave, smile, the Police Department will be watching you on camera; make sure they see your good side!

Jeez, in a time when more people are asking for more police actions we have a few that are complaining because we are getting something that will help the police in areas where people "disappear" when a police car appears. What's better someones word that something happened or actual video footage of the act? Maybe the complainers are just worried about what side of the camera they are going to be on.

Funny how they like to watch the people on video but turn the camera on a cop and they don't like it so much. I recall them telling me to turn mine off when I was videoing them arresting my brother. Police sware to uphold the constitution and protect rights and they fear the people who use them. Nothing more then power hungery cops who are above the law. lets get rid of PBA cards!!!

I would like to pose a question to Mr. Donahue: When have we ever gotten something for nothing? While the Lower Township taxpayers may not have specifically paid for this surveillance system, it was most certainly paid for by some taxpayer somewhere. In addition, while it may not be a monetary cost to the Lower Township residents, what about the cost of our freedom?

disgusting. how long are we going to allow this sort of thing to happen? btw, obama will not change a thing.

Once again the largess of bloated government has been reiterated. Is Mr. Donohue fit to be a dog catcher? With statements like, “no cost to taxpayers”, just show the myopic view of folks running everything in this country. Did someone just rub a lamp and the technology magically appeared, and the company that produced it did not want any money. No, the answer sir is that American people everywhere are forced by threat of violence (IRS) to pay for this program in a drastically inefficient top down system where we are all forced to submit to the welfare-warfare state.
More down to brass tacks, what is the need for this surveillance technology anyway? Why are we so indoctrinated with the idea that a police state is somehow necessary for our “safety”? You have to love a federal bunch of criminals that corrupts local criminals with “payola” called grant money for the next piece of a total surveillance state.
Good luck everyone, when heating your home is too expensive this winter (blame the Fed) just burn your copy of the Constitution, that’s about all it’s good for.
With everything in life there is a silver lining. Now the stone cutters can finally come in and finish the tombstone that started being worked on 232 years ago!!!
