To The Editor: In viewing past parades, I have been very upset at the lack of respect shown to our American flag when it passes by. Most adults and children do not acknowledge the flag in any way. Section 594 of the National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law on Jan. 28, 2008, states: “All persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present, but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or, if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention. All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes.” This was in a letter to the editor of USAA Magazine by Lt. Col. Charles Jackson, USAF, (Ret.) of Mountain City, Texas. With the Fourth of July and other American holidays coming up, I hope this will clarify the proper manner for showing respect for our flag during a parade. VIRGINIA MASLIN Stone Harbor

I agree completely, however you may want to send this letter to Barak Obama! He does not salute on the Senart floor, and he may be our next president.
