Police investigate accident scene on Route 47, Goshen, June 21 with four vehicles involved, that claimed the life of Josh Moren, 18. Accident photo by Harry B. Scheeler Jr. Portrait below of Moren courtesy The Daily Journal.

GOSHEN — A Bridgeton resident was charged with driving while intoxicated after a four-vehicle motor vehicle accident on Route 47 at milepost 15.8 on June 21 at 3:43 p.m. that claimed a Vineland teen’s life.

According to a joint release, issued June 23 by County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Middle Township Police Chief Joseph Evangelista, Laura Lippie, 47, of Bridgeton was operating a red Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound when she swerved into the ongoing traffic in the southbound lane.

Lippie’s vehicle then struck a motorcycle head-on that was southbound. Its driver, Vineland resident Joshua Moren, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moren had been a “standout baseball player” at Sacred Heart High School, from which he had graduated on June 2, according to a report in the June 23 edition of The (Vineland) Daily Journal.

Two other vehicles were involved, a 2008 Toyota Scion driven by Orlando Vega, and a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle drive by Dennis Beaulieu.

Both drivers were airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to several witnesses, Lippie was observed repeatedly crossing over the centerline into the southbound lane prior to the crash, and police believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

After being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Lippie was charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated.

Municipal Court Judge Peter Tourison set bail at $75,000 full cash.

Detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Middle Township Police Department and the Cape May County Fatal Crash Unit assisted in the investigation of the accident.

Taylor and Evangelista lauded all agencies involved.

There have been several serious accidents in that general area of the two-lane, heavily traveled highway where the speed limit is 50 mph.

I am so sorry to the families of this young man, Josh. I have lost a dear friend myself to drunk driving here in Florida, it happens everywhere. It is unacceptable and it is something that even making examples of people will not stop it from happening. This woman is tortured daily and no punishment will ever or could ever compare to that. This woman is a beautiful person on the inside a true heart of gold. I have known her my whole life. I know you all are mad, you deserve to be. But a word from a truely close family member who knows her not the person who was driving drunk.. please know she will be tormented with this the rest of her life. No one wins.
The DUI case here was prolonged for 4 years and then the drunk guy got 3 years. The time doesnt make it better.

I did not know this young man i just happened to read this heart breaking article on the internet and i would just like to send my thoughts and prayers out to his family.

As for the piece of *** who decided to drink and drive.....I HOPE YOU ROTT IN HELL!!! I hope the judge throws the book at your sorry ***. Why is it that the pieces of *** who drink and drive are always the ones who walk away from these horrible accidents???!!!!

I just came home from seeing a young man of eighteen laid out in a casket dressed in his high school baseball uniform and cradled in his hands a signed team ball.
I did not know him, but knew of him through my wife who was very good friends of his family, babysitting him as a child, and watching him grow into this young man.
Being a Paramedic of 27 years and a Physician Assistant of 13 years, it’s “natural” in medicine to develop defense mechanisms to deal with and handle serious, sudden, and “irrational” deaths especially of young patients. This means of coping is necessarily in place just to keep one’s sanity and to do one’s job well.
At times though, these defenses just are not strong enough… This is one of those times.
As I stated, I did not personally know this fine young man, we never talked, we never met. He was never my patient. I was not there when he died or even immediately after… but all this does not lessen the grief and anguish I feel from all those very close to him.
The young man had recently attended his commencement from high school with scholastic honors ready to start college; he was exceptional at baseball and was on the school’s All-star team. Pictures of him that I watched on video during the wake documented his life from an adorable infant which revealed a youthful smile beaming with the love of life emerging into a young man’s handsome face with eyes which I’m sure made some of his female classmates melt. Sitting there, after paying my respects to him and his family, I watched as the line, in the church grew longer and longer until it extended outside the church into an overcast rainy night.
I saw hugs and tears, family, friends, and classmates most in denial, most angry, bereaved and depressed that one so full of life with so much living ahead was taken away so abruptly in a violent fashion by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle down the shore to meet up with his parents.
His life ended, as a driver allegedly many times over the legal intoxication limit, was driving north on Route 47, Middle Township ironically to pick up her own son. She crossed the double-line striking him killing him instantly. She also caused a family in an SUV to strike a pole and another motorcyclist to “lay down” his bike to attempt avoiding injury.
I sat there, shaking my head, mentally speeding through psychological stages of death and dying stopping to dwell on anger and depression and the very morbid wish that the driver could be there to see all the pain and emotional distress she had caused by her irresponsible actions and how many lives she affected in so many ways for countless years to come.
I wish her a very long, unhappy life and I hope her memory functions never fail her. I pray every day and every night she thinks of Josh in particular when she looks into her own living son’s eyes!

First of all my prayers go out to Josh's family and friends. I know what it is like to be in this situation. I agree something needs to be done about these drunk drivers and it isnt just for the kids riding mopeds or motorcycles on the road. I am the mother of three children between the age of 2 and 8. I drive these roads just about everyday as do other vehicles with young occupants in it. What the drunks gonna do then..Continue to laugh because they have no remorse for what they have done. Cause from what i have seen from these drivers is no care for what they have done. Cause they are to drunk to care. While i agree this has become a problem in our area, I do not agree with the person from 6/23/08 that only CAPE MAY COUNTY needs to recognize this serious problem. This is a problem that increases each day in the world. Not just this area. Everyday someone is killed by a drunk driver. The WORLD needs to wake up to the serious problem and keep people like this from driving on, not only our roads, but all the roads in the world. again my prayers go out to joshs family and matts family. May these two get the punishment they deserve for the crime they have commited and the lives they have taken so young.

I hope that justice is served and that all parties involved will heal. My heart goes out to not only the young man's family but also to the son and husband of Ms. Lippie. She was wrong and the shame is that her family tried to get interventions for her but to no avail. As difficult as it is, both parties will have lost something that can't be replaced. Let us hope that things will be put in place to prevent this from happening again.

This "lady" who killed Josh Moren (she doesn't even deserve to be called a lady) should get LIFE IN PRISON!!!!!! She should spend the rest of her life in a little jail cell with her conscience eating her alive... having nightmares about what she did... Her lack of responsibility is disgusting and shameful... and that is why she should never be allowed to drive or see the light of day for a long time. And if it is true that she was going to pick up her child as drunk as she was then she is a MONSTER not a human being... disgusting woman. NJ should analyze this tragedy and increase the penalties for drunk driving to prevent this from happening again... to prevent MONSTERS from killing innocent people and ruining the lives of families. Mr. and Mrs. Moren have an empty life now... no more birthdays to celebrate, no more Christmas, nothing... everyday is going to be hell on earth for these two loving parents because a MONSTER decided to drink and drive.... That isn't fair... I was not a close friend of Josh, but I loved him all the same because he was a wonderful human being, a great guy.... and my heart hurts immensely, and the tears do not stop flowing from my eyes because I miss him. I saw with my own two eyes all the effort he put into graduating with good grades and maintaining those grades all year... I saw how he took each day to learn and make a brighter future for himself... and this MONSTER came and took his life. She deserves life in jail with her guilty conscience telling her "You monster... you killed someone... shame on you... you deserve to be in here".....

May Josh rest in peace in the love and mercy of Christ our Savior. He is with the angels now... and he is loving all of his friends and family from Heaven. RIP Josh

you no what I think she needs to die for what she did to my cousin

Wed, 06/25/2008 - 8:28pm - Posted by: Anonymous

route 47 is one of the worst roads to drive on. There are so many bad drivers out there that it is insane. My heart goes out to all of the people who knew josh. The State should put her laura lippie out in front of the State Building and make her an example, and have a Law in NJ caught driving drunk 10 years lic revoke. But let this be a time to heal and then start getting these laws in place.

This goes to the family of Josh Moren. God bless your family and friends. Always keep you head up. God willing hopefully the Drunk from Bridgeton gets what she deserve's LIFE IN PRISON without any parole. I lost my cousin to a drunk driver. Its the worst thing that happened to our family. R.I.P Josh Moren

This case should be treated as it is called, "Vehicular HOMICIDE!!!" Thus, since she was three times the legal limit intoxicated it is MURDER and she should incur the full sentence as a MURDERER without chance of parole! The grape vine hints that she was also at the time on her way to pick up her own son. If she shows no care for the life of her own child picking him up while drunk, how can she care for the life of ANYONE ELSE!!!
I am sure the family, the coworker's of the mother [a Registered Nurse], the friends of his father [a strong, active member in the religious community], Josh's classmates [by the way he just graduated for Sacred Heart High School with honors five days prior the crash ; and was an "All-Star" shortstop on the school's baseball team], Community leaders who knew and respected the family, etc. will be surrounding the court on the day his murderer is tried. Your honor, the public will not accept anything less than the maximum penalty for her crime!
Did I mention, this was the mother's only son and it was very heart wrenching and tearful visiting their house to attempt to comfort them while looking at pictures of this young man from his baby pictures through recent graduation.
Your honor, may the court set the precedent for the safety of other innocent victim with the maximum sentence for this most horrific crime of premeditated murder! By drinking and driving, the defendant knows the laws against such and on that first sip accepts full responsibility for the actions and consequencies.

this happened so quick and randomly. just 3 weeks ago josh and i graduated from sacred heart high school. words can not descride how much he is missed. he was a great person and never in a million years did he desirve this. but only the good die young. i will forever keep josh in my heart along with all the memories we shared. he was a great baseall player and had a bright future ahead of him but no one will get to see all the great things he could of done because his life was cut short. a women decided to drive drunk instead of calling someone to come get her and as a result killed an innocent person. the laws for drunk driving are not strong enough and something needs to be done. if all the recent accidents caused by drunk drivers hasn't opened peoples eyes i don't know what will. my prayers go out to josh's family and his friends who are trying to deal with the loss of an amazing person. josh is missed by so many people and he will forever be in our hearts. #1 always & forever !!!

I am a friend of Josh's mother-he was her only child-her life--he was a wonderful son and they had a special bond-she adored him and was so proud of him--now he is gone
I hope this woman rots in hell and has nightmares every night for the rest of her life--this will not bring back Josh nor will it ease his parents/family/friends pain/grief but then again what do I care if she suffers--she didn't worry about anybody else when she decided to drink and drive. I hope she gets the maxium sentence-hopefully jail time--I won't mind my tax dollars to pay for that.

Godspeed Josh!!! Heartfelt condolences to the parents. I will always remember a friends dad telling us that motorcycles while fun are dangerous on public highways. I remember getting my first and only street bike a Yamaha 400 Classic. Some older gal did not see me and pulled out in front of me about a month later. Missed her by inches. Traded it for an old chevy and never looked back. I dont know a single person that never drove intoxicated. NOT ONE!!! Lets pray for all the families affected by this tragic incident. I think drunken driving should be mandatory 6 months in jail. And subsidize a true public transportation system such as a text based multiple passenger taxi van service. Drive a loop around the county on a regular basis. Text I need a taxi with your phone and get a text back estimated time of arrival. I truly believe a flexible taxi system such as this will dramatically reduce energy prices and drunk driving. Seems like a no brrainer to kill two birds with one stone. BTW I thought Judge Tourison was recusing himself with DUI cases as he was nabbed at th NCM wawa for allegedly driving drunk himself???

Tue, 06/24/2008 - 5:52pm - Posted by: Anonymous

what was the judges bail set at for the night that he ran somebody off the road? He was also seen staggering around wawa parking lot before the police showed up.

I think they need to give jail time on the 1st offence.

This is just not fair, this vibrant young man had his life taken away and now his family is left to suffer the aftermath. I pray that this intoxiated driver gets life in prison, she never deserves to see the light of day again.

Tue, 06/24/2008 - 12:02pm - Posted by: Anonymous

To the parents, my God be with you both at this most difficult time and my His love help to sustain you. My heartfelt sympathy to you.

Laws need to change concerning drunk drivers; they are not strict enough. If you take a life, you should be incarcerated for life without parole and lose your license for 10 years, first offense. You have to make people think about repercussions.

I know Josh's mother and he was her only son. He was her pride and joy. He had just graduated high school. He was about to start his life. And now he is gone. She was so proud of him. And now what does she have? She has memories. No son to hold. No new events in her son's life to look forward to. No grandchildren in the future. And she is blaming herself in any way she can. How fair is that? This drunk driver can not suffer enough for what she has done. Drunk drivers should be punished to the severest extent of the law. The Moren Family did nothing to deserve this heartache. Nor did the other victims of the accident. And what did this drunk driver say? She is sorry??? It is too bad that someone who saw her driving erratically earlier did not call her tag number in to the police and alert them. Maybe Josh would be alive today. But that is beside the point. Josh is gone, the family is left heartbroken and will never be the same again. I hope that lady enjoyed her few drinks to the fullest.

I was involved in a similar accident 25 years ago on Bayshore Road in NCM. I had just pulled out onto the road from a gas station after filling up and was going about 25 mph when a car traveling in the opposite direction suddenly swerved into my lane and struck me head on.
There is really no time to react if you are on the motorcycle, can't swerve left because you would be in the oncoming lane with cars heading right at you. If you swerve right you either hit a parked car or run off the run and risk hitting a tree.
In my case the speeds involved were around 25mph,I stood up on the footpegs and luckily ended up flying comepletely over top of the car and landing in the street behind it,suffering multiple broken bones and injuries but it could have been a lot worse,I was out of work about 3 months
Turns out it was a 17 year old single mother driving the car.She turned around to check on her child in the back seat and when she did the car veered left into my lane.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this young boy. I would like to know,is
the judge that set bail a drunk driver himself? And if so, I thought he was not aloud
to deal with DWI cases. What gives?

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 10:50pm - Posted by: Anonymous

My prayers and all of my families prayers go out to Josh's family. Thank you to the many people who stopped to help with the accident. Our EMT's need to be commendened for their quick work at the scene, I am the wife of the surviving motorcyclist.Yes this our second encounter with a drunk driver. When will people realize that drinking and driving ruins the lives of everyone involved. The drunk driver does have a young son we met him in the ER at ACMC.

this really ticks me off. my best friend matt tozer was killed two weeks ago by a drunk driver about 5 minutes away from where this happened. this accident happened a few house down from where I live. I got so mad when I heard about this. something needs to be done about drunk drivers. two boys in less than two weeks have gotten their innocent lives taken away by a person who decided to drive drunk. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 9:30pm - Posted by: Anonymous

I hope the drunk driver enjoys her next seven or eight years inher 14 x 14 cell at the County Jail. I pray Judge Tourism decides to give her more than the seven or so years. She took the like of a person who was just starting theirs. She should be faced with the maximum penalty with the maximum jail time.

My prayers go out to Josh's family. I can not express my true sympathy to the family of the victim. Good bless.

our friend was the driver on the harley, we thank god that he is alive. our heart goes out to the family of the young man. and for the family in the white vehicle we are glad that everyone is doing ok. we hope that this woman is charged to the fullest extent. and to whatever establishment may of served her. may there be no mery for her!

what the heck is wrong with people?!!? why do you think there afre freaken signs that say "DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE" he was so young and sooo much to live for. what the heck is wrong with that lady?! this is an angry and hurtful blog because i personally met Josh through my cousins, and he came to visit our family like 6 months ago for Christmas and New Years Eve. The day he left was even hard to say 'g'bye', but throughout the whole time i met him, he lived life to the fullest. He wasn't afraid to do anything he wanted, but at the same time he had so much respect for his relatives. When he came to my house for our family Christmas, he could tell he was genuinely nice as a person. I think that lady should feel how it is to have a son, if she has one, ripped away from her and killed by a drunk driver. how would she feel?!
people need to learn NOT to freaken DRINK AND DRIVE!!

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 8:48pm - Posted by: Anonymous

Drunk drivers should be treated like a "SEX OFFENDER". They need to report to the authorities every month for 20 years to show that they are clean.

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 8:07pm - Posted by: Anonymous

Yes the driver of the SUV was drunk. I was there and smelled her. She was slurring her words and admitted to "having a couple drinks." I hope she has to live with a guilt greater than she can bear. My heart was broken that day for the boys family. My deepest sympathies.

2 kids in two weeks. Cape May County needs to realize that we have a serious problem. We need to stand together against this. Prosecuters, law enforcement, bar owners, clubs, parents, everyone needs to admit we have a collective problem that must be dealt with. How many more of us will have to die before we rrecognize the danger of alcohol? The greatest tragedy is that there will be more Matthews and Joshes. Who will it be?

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 5:55pm - Posted by: Anonymous

I was on the road that day coming home with my kids. All I can say is God be with the rfamliy of the boy who died. Traffic was told to turn around and go back into the city because it was so bad. I was there when medivac came flying overheard. No one should ever have to go through something this horrible. I was wondering what had really happened and now that I know I feel ten times worse for being so upset about the delay.
May god be with you all.

There is a mom whos heart is shattered her son will never come home. And a father who will never see his son play ball again. A bright future cut way to short because someone decided to drink and drive and take this young mans life. Everyone that knows that family has been affected from coworkers to close friends. I hope the person (the drunk driver) pays for what they have done. This young man was a shining star who now holds a place in everyones heart. To the broken harted parents he was the light of your lives hold on to your memories he is now a shining star with GOD may he rest in peace. Love staff at SJHS

Just to let you know.....Yes the lady that caused the crash was drunk!!!! There is a state trooper posted out side her hospital room!!!!! The motorcycles were not passing were they shouldn't!!!!! When two bikes ride together one rides closer to the yellow line and the other at the shoulder, that’s all that was going on. As for the man on the second bike this is the 2nd time he has been hit on his bike by a drunk driver! !!

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 1:40am - Posted by: Anonymous

The 18 year old motorcyclist that died was not in the wrong, it was the 47 year old drunk driver crossing the yellow line around the curb and hitting the 18 year old motorcyclist head on! Please get your facts straight prior to posting.

No matter what kind of lines you paint on the road, signs that you erect ie. speed limit, there will be nutty people who will not pay attention. They continuously pass on the double lines that run through the town of Goshen and the going speed limit is well over 55mph. What must be done?

I am a retired fireman and in the 15 years I was a fireman i saw alot of bad accidents and death and yesterdays really bothered me I never saw a motorcycle accident that bad and ive seen alot of death but yesterday it was assumed that the man on the motorcycle was driving crazy and caused it.Last night when thinking about the accident i told my girlfriend that lady smelled like booze and the worst part is she had told me and another guy she was on her way to pick up her own son and it turned out she killed someones son not to mention hurt at least two other men and a little girl.I would like to mention to the hand full of bystanders that helped out great work and to everyone that was hurt a speedy recovery.to the family of the young man who did not make it you have my most heartfelt sympathy.

read the police activity log on this website for this day it says:

Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident- DWI: 1543 patrol-detectives
SH 47 15.9 Goshen 1 arrest 22108

So here's your proof it was a drink driver

Sun, 06/22/2008 - 9:34pm - Posted by: Anonymous

it was a drunk driver who killed an innocent motorcycle driver who was obeying the speed limit and not driving wrecklessly and that is a fact

Sun, 06/22/2008 - 9:27pm - Posted by: Anonymous

It was the red SUV that was the drunk driver. She came around the bend, crossed the solid yellow lines and hit the first bike (he was killed) and then clipped the 2nd bike, he saved his own life by actually jumping off his bike before the other car that was behind the 2 bikes could take him and the bike out. It only took the bike. My BIL was the surviving motorcycle victim, he did not know the other motorcycle driver. Our sympathies to the other biker's family.

My boyfriend and I came upon the accident seconds after it happened, my boyfriend being a retired fireman ran right up to the motorists involved, someone did mention that the man on the bike had been driving erratically but I cant say because we didnt witness it. My thoughts and prayers go out to the teen who was killed, as i sat and watched i just felt so bad that his body lay there while everyone was walking by..so sad..I would like to say that i hope that all who were involved are doing ok. And only hope that there was not any alcohol involved. I'm from philly so if anyone hears any updates on those involved please update. Thanks

no one should state anything unless they know factual information, the motorcycle was not "speeding and passing where he shouldn't be passing" don't speak just to be heard.
