RIO GRANDE –– Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Chief Joseph Evangelista of the Middle Township Police Department report the June 10, 2008 investigation of a reportedly armed suspect who assaulted another individual in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township.

Members of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Gangs, Guns, and Drugs Task Force, Major Crimes Unit, the Middle Township Police Street Crimes Unit and Detective Bureau, along with the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team assisted with the investigation.

Shortly before 5:00 PM on Tuesday, the Middle Township Police Department received a call reporting that William D. Wilson, who resides at 801 Poplar Avenue, was armed with a handgun, and had physically assaulted another individual earlier in the afternoon.

Wilson allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim and bound the victim’s hands and feet. Wilson then allegedly physically assaulted the victim for a period over three hours.

During the course of the investigation, Wilson was taken into custody without incident as he left his residence in the 800 Block of Poplar Avenue. Wilson was found to be in possession of a .22 caliber handgun at the time of his arrest.

A Search Warrant was later executed at Wilson’s residence and revealed evidence of the crimes for which Wilson was subsequently charged including: Aggravated Assault, Criminal Restraint, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Certain Persons not to Posses a Weapon, and Terroristic Threats.

Wilson was committed to the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Prosecutor Taylor and Chief Evangelista commend all of the efforts of the agencies involved resulting in the successful conclusion of this investigation.

Why can't people believe this happened in Rio Grande? Like Rio Grande is this great place. It's part of Cape May County which is the pits. I grew up there and it has only gotten worse in the 20 years I've been gone. This person was paroled because he served his time. Now he's going back to the only home he had for the last 25 years. Not to make excuses for him but he is instutionlized and will probabley never be able to survive on the streets again.
