DOVER, DEL. — Bruce Knoll Jr., 16, of Eldora, the Herald’s veteran NASCAR columnist, joined thousands of other racing fans this past weekend at Dover International Speedway to watch some thrilling events unfold on the oval track.

Knoll witnessed Kyle Busch drive “the dominant car in all three races this weekend at the Monster Mile,” as history unfolded before everyone’s eyes.

“But day after day, some turn of events would leave Busch watching the black and white checkers fall for someone else. But that wasn’t the case Sunday, when Busch led 158 of 400 laps en route to his first career Sprint Cup Series victory at Dover International Speedway,” Knoll wrote.

“But the Best Buy 400 Benefiting Student Clubs for Autism Speaks didn’t come without its share of a strange turn of events that left many drivers watching Busch take the flag. A twelve car pileup exiting turn two just 17 laps in claimed the vehicles of Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Elliot Sadler, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Kevin Harvick, among others, effectively putting those drivers several laps down and well out of contention.

“A fifteen-minute red flag session followed, allowing track workers extra time to clear of the mangled and maimed automobiles and scattered debris from the racetrack,” he wrote.
