WILDWOOD — The ocean was officially unlocked with the turn of a silver key on May 23.
Representatives from the island’s communities, local school children and a few kite fliers from the International Kite Festival kicked off the start of the 2008 summer season with the annual key ceremony.
Many in the crowd kicked off their shoes to get their feet sandy, but a few chose to stay bundled in sweatshirts and sneakers as a cool wind kept the air chilly. Perfect for kites, not so much for beach-goers.
But a chill in the air isn’t going to freeze the spirits in this island community. Not after Wildwood nabbed the top spot in New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches Survey at njtopten-beaches.org., sponsored by New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC), New Jersey Sea Grant and the Richard Stockton College Coastal Research Center in conjunction with the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism. Wildwood Crest was named number two in the contest and North Wildwood was number four.
Wildwood also took home top honors in two special categories, being hailed as the state's Best Beach for Tourism and for Events. Wildwood Crest won for Best Family Vacation Beach and Island Beach State Park for Ecotourism.
