WEST WILDWOOD — Dr. Herbert C. Frederick, Gerard McNamara and Scott William Golden were elected to the city’s three vacant commission seats on May 20.
Frederick, 57, is a lifelong resident of the borough and after spending over 30 years working with the Wildwood Board of Education, recently retired as the principal of Glenwood Avenue Elementary School. He was mayor of West Wildwood from 1980 to1984 and a commissioner here from 2002 to 2004. Between those terms, he served as freeholder from 1985 to 1991.
Frederick said that he wanted to bring his experience to the borough, but wanted “all of the residents to be a part of what we’re doing.”
He said he saw that in the previous administration, “money is being spent irresponsibly and our seniors are hurting. They are being faced with the choice of paying prescriptions or paying taxes.”
Frederick said he wanted to make West Wildwood affordable again.
McNamara, 66, said he had been visiting the Wildwoods “all his life” and he and his wife Betty made the decision to move to the borough “full time” five years ago.
He is a former Commissioner on the Delaware River Port authority and current Democratic committeeman. McNamara, an Army veteran, is also a retired union steward and printer.
He told the Herald that as a retired person on a fixed income, he was sensitive to the taxes he felt were getting “out of hand.”
Golden, 36, was a life-long summer resident of the borough and decided to make it his full-time home 17 years ago. Golden also established his own business, Golden Builders, in West Wildwood.
“I feel I can bring a honest and reliable approach to our town,” Golden said. “It would be an honor to represent both year-round and part-time residents with their best interest.”
The results of the election split up the campaign team consisting of Frederick, McNamara and Dennis Hocker, as well as the team of Joseph Hickey, Cornelius J. Maxwell and Golden.
Mayor Chris Fox and Commissioner Rita Maroldo did not run for reelection.
After the Mother’s Day storm and subsequent flooding, the municipal election for borough commissioners was canceled May 13 and the date moved to May 20. Despite the change in date, the weather still didn’t cooperate and residents of the tiny community trekked to borough hall to cast their vote as more rain fell.
However, a large voter turnout was anticipated and two voting machines were used at the polls.
According to the Cape May County Clerk’s Office, the unofficial results are as follows: Herbert C. Frederick, 176; Gerard P. McNamara, 156; Scott Golden, 151; Dennis G. Hocker, 145; Cornelius J. Maxwell, 144; Joseph L. Hickey, 139 and Robert Kilgore, 112. A total of 1,023 votes were cast.

I don't live in west wildwood and I don't vote in west wildwood, but I have seen and hear enough to know that the election there was held in the utmost honesty on the part of the Frederick,McNamara. and Hocker Team, Also I hear the Election Board was their and sheriffs from cape may county to make sure that everything was done right.
So what the heck is the problem. The people have voted and elected the Frederick, McNamara and Golden. This stalling for time by the Hickey, Maxwell, and I assume Golden Team leads me to believe that there is a whole lot more to this then all the lies that the Hickey team is putting out..If you can't take the defeat than stay out of the kitchen.

The West Wildwood voters have spoken, they are tired of the high taxes and the favoritisim. Chris Fox is a liar, so good riddance. Next item to take care of will be undoing the shady contract he underhandedly awarded his brother Allen. Then after brother Jim finds out we taxpayers want a fair days work for a fair days pay, he will probably leave also. As for Scott Golden be your own man, and you will make a fine commissioner. Good Luck to our new team go forward and represent the voters of West Wildwood, make us proud.

Funny, I thought it was Chuck Frederick who created a hostile election environment with his electioneering under the guise of being a vote challenger. How was that EVER allowed to happen? Dirty politics is alive and well in all of Cape May County!

I lived and voted here in west wildwood over 20 years and after what I witnessed I will never vote here again. The so called hand picked Fox team created a very hostile place to be with all there bull. I have to thank the sheriffs and county board of election for being present
for if it wasn't for them I believe the election would have been a catastrophe.

All of the negative comments about the NEW ELECTED OFFICIALS I'm sure they know where and who there coming from, So why don't you get a life and take it like real men that obviously your not. The past regime only took care of the people that they new who voted for them they certainly were not for all of the people like both summer and full time residents.

Half the people who voted for Fredericks team do not even live in the borough of West Wildwood. Judge Batten will make the correct decesion. If you cheat you get caught, no one wants a cheating team in office. You cannot push people to vote for you by saying vote for me outside of the borough hall either. I told Fredericks I would never vote for you. Judge Batten will decide!

Somebody on D Avenue should have been voted in instead.... At least he stepped up to the plate. Next time he needs to add 2 team members to eliminate what really happened. Since people wanted to exercise all 3 votes, he never had a chance...

What do you mean you want to make West Wildwood safe and affordable? Since when hasn't it been safe? This has got to be one of the safest places to live. Most everyone looks out for each other and their property and the police do an excellent job. Where else can you live and have the police check your property when they know you're not around? What about our surplus that has been built up for years? How can you say that Mayor Fox did a lousy job? The Public Works Department has been busting their butts to clean this island up and what kind of appreciation do they get? A bunch of miserable people complaining because they weren't warned! Don't say the siren didn't go off! Someone in North Wildwood heard it! You have lived on this island how long? And you don't know to move your car? Shame on you! You were probably too lazy to get off your duff and move it! Wake up West Wildwood!!! You are in for a rude awakening if that clown gets in! He is the rudest person I've ever seen!

Don't rule Hocker out yet - the final tally comes in tomorrow(Friday) regarding provisional voters. Then we'll see what's what in this tally.
Thu, 05/22/2008 - 1:03pm
I am so glad we have voted the old regime out. We will have a better government with the newly elected officials. I'm sorry that Hocker did not pull more votes. He should have made a little more effort to influence voters.
Thu, 05/22/2008 - 9:16am
Fredericks is not a "new" government-he's part of the original problems in West Wildwood. Thankfully there is now a surplus in the budget, many improvements have been made to the parks and bulkheads and this is thanks to Mayor Fox and the commissioners over the past years. Get real, Fredericks lovers, he's going to only temporarily give tax relief, then we're all in real trouble....
Thu, 05/22/2008 - 4:17am
Somebody on D. Avenue needs a mercantile license!
Thu, 05/22/2008 - 1:28am
Talk about "sore loser syndrome"...the people of West Wildwood have spoken, their votes have been cast, and it's "game over". Out with the old, in with the new. If any place was ever in desperate and dire need of a fresh infusion of new government, it's West Wildwood. It may have only took a dozen years, but better late than never. No more ineptitude - let's see some real effective government that truly works on behalf of its citizens. The "old guard" had their shot and they're shot. Make way for a new day.

I'm sitting in my chair laughing, laughing, laughing. Are you for real? "Stop the negative comments," come on. For years, all you've spewed is negative comments. As for knowing who someone is, so what! Is that a threat? Stop trying to bully people, go back to school and learn to spell and punctuate a sentence.
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 6:12pm
Forget Frederick is right!!! And to all you people who supported him: I'm predicting that he'll forget all about you now that he doesn't need your vote anymore. It's my opinion that it has been his M.O. for years and years. I'm pretty confident you'll all learn the hard way, but you'll learn.
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 5:34pm
Stop the negative comments we know who you are your out of office now go find another hen house to live.
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 3:44pm
Herbet Fredericks is in for a rude awakening. Lets see how long he last's with all the lies he told the older people. Chuck is in it for him self. To bad he cant go no where with out Golden saying yes. Lets go Mcnamara for Mayor!
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 12:53pm
Scott Golden will be a great asset to the community. Lets get Mcnamara as Mayor and Golden with him! forget Fredericks
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 11:55am
Job well done to Fredricks and McNamara. We are all looking for some change in the town of West Wildwood and we are confident that it will now happen!
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 3:34am
For folks here in West Willdwood, truly change is good.

I feel really sad for the residents of West Wildwood. In my opinion, two worse candidates couldn't have been elected. Good luck to Scott Golden, he'll need it.
