COURT HOUSE — A total of 3,807 voters turned out in Cape May City, Cape May Point, and Ocean City Tuesday to elect their municipal leaders, according to unofficial results from the Cape May County Clerk's office.
In Cape May, a new mayor was elected.
“Tonight’s election showed that the public of Cape May wants a change and that change is to be open input for them during the whole process of determining the future of this city,” said Mayor Elect Edward J. Mahaney Jr. “The public wants to be involved in the planning and also the funding of the direction this city going in.”
He said he did door-to-door campaigning throughout the city, held a number of small group meetings, advertised in print and radio and used signs.
Mahaney said he developed a grass roots following winning four of the city’s six voting dis-tricts. He also won the absentee vote.
Controversy over future city projects such as constructing a new Convention Hall shows “a lack of cohesion” in the town.
“I think the number one priority has to get the entire residential and business community together to agree what direction they want this city to go in and have the council follow that direction,” said Mahaney.
He said strong leadership and cohesion on council in the past has been able to handle any prob-lem.
Mahaney said the new Convention Hall should be addressed “in three prongs: the design, the permits and the funding. He said the project should not be funded totally on the backs of the taxpayers.
Mayor Jerome E. Inderwies congratulated Mahaney.
Inderwies said he had a “great six years as mayor of the city and enjoyed every minute of it.” He said he would move on “to something different.”
