“The Turtle Trot marks the start of another healthy summer in Stone Harbor, and is one of our most exciting and popular events of the year,” said event organizer Debbie Orzech. “The entire community gets involved, with many area businesses supporting the race through sponsorships and donations of prizes.”
The event’s unique name comes from the frequent sightings of Diamondback turtles crossing the town’s roads in search of an area to nest. This year, organizers expect 300-400 participants, and encourage everyone to get involved by joining the race or walk, volunteering at the event or cheering on the participants as a spectator.
Contrary to its name, the Turtle Trot is a fast course through Stone Harbor’s scenic, residential neighborhoods. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three men and the top three women to place in the 5K Race. In addition, the top three men and top three women in six different age categories will also take home cash prizes. There is even a prize for the top Master (age 40 and better) male and female racers. The Fun Walk is an untimed, non-competitive event that is suitable for the entire family.
Registration for the Turtle Trot begins at 6:45 a.m. at the municipal lot on 95th Street and the beach, with the 5k Race commencing at 8 a.m. and the Fun Walk beginning just five minutes later. The Turtle Trot entry fee is $18 before May 21,
and $20 after. The entry fee for children 12 and under is $12 before May 21, and $15 after. Registration forms are available on the Chamber of Commerce Web site at www.stoneharborbeach.com and at the Chamber office.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce, which in turn will donate a generous portion of the proceeds to the Jack Fitzpatrick Memorial Scholarship Fund. In its second year, the Jack Fitzpatrick Memorial Scholarship recognizes hard work, honesty and dedication and will be awarded to a high school senior who has worked in the Stone Harbor Community.
