To The Editor: On first reading, I was sure Art Hall's April 23 column had something to do with April Fools, but it's too late for that. So maybe it's an attempt to stir up some letters in response...if so, it worked. It's hard for me to imagine that someone who can read would equate wind energy with "Band-Aid" treatment of our environmental crisis. And why would anyone who can read, think that coal, the 19th century solution, is any part of the answer to the energy problems in the 21st century? Because we have it? That's not a good enough reason to pollute the air, destroy rivers and mountains and peoples' lungs. The coal lobby has million dollar ads on TV, touting the benefits of "clean coal." It's an oxymoron, but Hall has taken the bait. Hall objects to environmentalists' attempts to preserve public lands. Maybe it's not that doesn't read, but that he reads all the wrong reports, I bet he hated "An Inconvenient Truth," and he wouldn't read copies of Sierra Club and NRDC magazines even if I sent them to him. He prefers to hew to the current administration's position that "more studies are needed." That will be cold comfort to him, when developers have removed every green thing from Cape May County and the ocean and bay meet on his front porch sometime in the next 20 years. Then he might be forced to admit that a "Band-Aid” could have helped. I am grateful that there are still some opinions worth reading in the Herald. I agree with Hall's concern about rising food and gas prices, but he needs a reality check. It's time to join the environmental movement, not diss it. The Herald is in a position to make a positive contribution to the struggle. Let's hope that wiser voices prevail. ANNE BIDDLE PRATT Goshen
