Canines merrily mingle April 5 in Cape May's new dog park. Photo by Jack Fichter
CAPE MAY -- Nearly three dozen dogs and their owners attended the opening of a dog park on Lafayette Street April 5.
Dogs of many breeds and sizes cavorted in the fenced enclosure while their owners chatted and ate hot dogs and pretzels.
Mayor Jerome E. Inderwies, City Manager Luciano V. Corea, Jr., Deputy Mayor Niels Favre and Councilwoman Linda Steenrod attended the event.
The event was a success with all canine participants getting along splendidly.
The Cape May Dog Friendly Association raised funds to open the park. Dog owners must purchase a pass from City Hall to use the park.

Does the dog park have a website where you can read its rules? I'm curious to know hours, requirements for a permit, if you must be a resident, or can live in neighboring towns, etc., as well as more info about the park itself. Is it just a fenced-in grassy area or does it have trails, water source, etc? Guess I'll check the City Hall website next.

The photo indicates dogs of all sizes are being co-mingled. Small and tiny dogs under 10-12 pounds should never be in the same enclosed area with large dogs. If you do that long enough, eventually a lot of small dogs will be injured or worse. There should be an electronic yahoo group in support of this park.

The white dog in the picture is "Sophie", a PBGV, and she loved the park . She has been walking all over Cape May for 6 months but this was the most fun she has had in without a leash. Thank you for taking her picture!
