OCEAN CITY –– Join Ocean City in a global effort and make a huge impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The act is simple: At 8 p.m. on March 29, join millions across the globe and turn off your lights for one full hour.
The City of Ocean City will be participating in this movement by turning off all non-essential lighting as part of the Earth Hour 2008 challenge.
The city urges all individuals, families and businesses to do what you can on March 29th and turn off your lights for one full hour.
The Earth Hour movement began last March in Sydney, Australia as an easy, simple way for its residents and business owners to take action against climate change. The result was an estimated participation of 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses. Even famous landmarks like the Sydney Opera House turned off their lights.
So far, over 20 new cities have signed up for Earth Hour 2008 including Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco. Ocean City will be joining these major cities and leaders.
All Ocean City residents, schools and businesses are encouraged to join the movement. The Earth Hour Web site (www.earthhour.org) provides further information on how to make flipping the switch fun for families and still profitable for businesses like restaurants.
This is just one of many easy ways that will help Ocean City remain a clean and green community.
The Earth Hour challenge on March 29th will serve as a kick-off for other City sponsored environmental events scheduled for the month of April.
On April 4th, the City will be co-hosting a seminar on energy conservation with the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce at the Flanders Hotel. To register, check the Chamber’s Web site at www.capemaycountychamber.com.
An Electronics Recycling Day is scheduled for April 12th at the Shelter Road Recycling Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Ocean City’s Earth Day Celebration will be held on April 20th from noon to 4 pm at the Bayside Center. This event will be fun for the entire family with music, exhibits, games for the kids and boat rides, among other things.
The events of the month will conclude with a Spring Beach Sweep on April 26.

So, where does all the unused energy go? It's not like the energy companies can just shut down the power plants for an hour. This is actually more harmful than helpful for the "greenhouse gas" emissions. Energy companies are currently paying people to leave their lights on at night because of the excess off-peak energy.
