WOODBINE -- On Jan. 6, as Woodbine Borough Council swore in Douglass Watkins and Eduardo Ortiz, it also made Cape May County history.

At the meeting, Councilman David Rodriguez was honored in a noteworthy manner by his peers. Rodriguez told the Herald, “I was honored by my colleagues and named Borough Council President. I was informed that this is history in Cape May County to be the first Hispanic council president in our county.”

Just to be sure, Rodriguez contacted the County Clerk's office and that fact was confirmed.

L:et's get over and move on from identity politics. It shouldn't be newsworthy what the ethnicity is of the new council member....why not just focus on his/her merits, experience and ability to represent all the constituents in his/her charge? The new councilmember's ethnicity doesn't make her/him anymore important or noteworthy. I'm of the same ethnicity as this councilmember but I refuse to let that be my calling card. I don't make it an issue and certainly don't expect anyone else to do so either. Get over it.
