Cape May Court House-As the winter solstice approaches along with the holiday season, the Cape May County Library hosts a presentation on “The Traditions of the Yule Log.” Jody Swope, a mixed media artist whose artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the Philadelphia and South Jersey, will present the special program at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3rd. The program will take place at the Main Branch of the Library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Bring this old custom of good fortune and health into your home as Swope demonstrates how to create a traditional Yule Log for the holiday hearth or as a holiday gift.
The tradition of the Yule log spans millennia and precedes Christianity. The Yule Log was burned by peasants on the winter solstice in an effort to keep evil spirits away which they believed might come because of the prolonged darkness. Later, as Christianity spread, the tradition became more closely associated with Christmas, especially in England where Father Christmas is often seen carrying the Yule Log.
Swope has six years of experience as a floral designer, has lectured to garden clubs and groups throughout Cape May County and currently teaches art classes for adults at the “Center for Community Arts” in Cape May.
