he 2008 Charlotte C. Moretti Race for the Cure 5K Run and Fun Walk will take place on Saturday, October 11. The competition, a fundraiser for breast cancer research, will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the Sea Isle City Promenade at JFK Boulevard. A Fun Walk will immediately follow the start of the 5K Run.

There is a $10.00 donation for all participants age 13 and older. Children age 12 and under can walk or run for free or make any donation. All registrants will receive free t-shirts, light refreshments and bottled water while supplies last. Registration will begin on the day of the race at 8:00 a.m. near the starting line.

Once again, the event is expected to attract runners and walkers from around the region, many wearing pink (the signature color of breast cancer awareness). Proceeds from the Charlotte C. Moretti 5K Run and Fun Walk will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

In 2007, this event was re-named in honor of long-time Sea Isle City resident Charlotte Moretti, who died in 2006 after a five-year battle with breast cancer. Moretti, an active member of Saint Joseph Church and a volunteer with the Sea Isle City Tourism Commission, was a familiar face at many events in the area. She was also a coordinator of the Beachcomber Guided Tours and started the Annual Turtle Party, which raises funds for the Beachcomber Program. Known for being a supporter of worthwhile causes, she received the AARP “Volunteer of the Year Award” in 2005.

“Of course Charlotte is not the only resident of Sea Isle City who has died from breast cancer, but when we honor Charlotte we are also honoring all the other brave women who have died from this disease,” said Event Coordinator Irene Jameson.

The Charlotte C. Moretti 5K Run and Fun Walk is sponsored by AARP Chapter 710 in cooperation with the City of Sea Isle City. For additional information, phone (609) 263-2968.
