Shows, Festivals & Parades

Temperance Tantrums, a hilarious musical spoof of a Victorian Temperance rally, returns to Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May on Monday evenings (only) through August 18th. With authentic music and boisterous bar room comedy, Temperance Tantrums is modeled after the Temperance rallies of the past, where the object was to persuade individuals to forswear Demon Rum and vote for prohibition. The production at Aleathea’s, however, serves up Temperance …with a twist.

“It is absolutely essential that patrons be able to enjoy their favorite beverages during the show….be it wine, beer or a cocktail,” said Andrea Kehmeier, the show’s writer and producer. “The Rose Room at Aleathea’s is a perfect venue for Temperance Tantrums, because it is a beautiful, historically significant space and it allows us to incorporate Aleathea’s scrumptious dinner or snack and beverage service into the evening’s entertainment.” This allows the restaurant to offer a great dinner and show package, as well as snack and beverage service from the regular menu to “show only” patrons.

Temperance Tantrums combines elements of musical theatre, melodrama, comedy improvisation, and audience involvement into a unique, side-splitting entertainment experience. Based upon actual accounts of nineteenth century Temperance rallies, Temperance Tantrums is performed by a talented quartet of professional singers/actors who portray the founders of “The Eternal Sword Temperance Union.” Using a piano, marching bass drum, trumpet, and other musical instruments, the troupe performs rousing historical songs that were originally written in all seriousness, but are now the basis for the production’s tongue-in-cheek humor. A glance at the titles of some of the authentic songs included in Temperance Tantrums, tells the story:

· Lips that Touch Liquor Will Never Touch Mine
· Girls, Marry a Temperance Man
· Under the Anheuser Bush
· Willie Has Signed the Pledge
· Come Home, Father

In addition to presenting songs of the historical period, the actors draw individual members of the audience into the action. Audience members present improvised testimonies about the evils of “the serpent in the wine cup,” and they recite and sign “The Temperance Pledge,” (but The Pledge contains tongue twisters that are impossible to pronounce. Anyone who tries, sounds as if they’ve been…well…imbibing!)

Temperance Tantrums will be presented at Aleathea’s Restaurant in The Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street, Cape May, NJ on Monday evenings through August 18th. Dinner is at 6:30 pm. Show is at 7:30 pm. The dinner and show package price is $40.00. “Show Only” tickets are $20.00. Discounts for seniors, students and groups are available.
